...... Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

Please! Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time It Is Loaned
The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is re- sponsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service.
The reason is :--
There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City.
THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS-BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.
If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST. If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER the cost to each.
And
It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers-the GREATER the cost to each.
Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.
MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means IN- CREASED COST.

THE PUBLISHERS
INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, pre- sent to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1950 edition of the High Point City Directory, which also includes Fairmont Park.
Confidence in the growth of High Point's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting High Point to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the High Point Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and pro- fessional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occu- pation and address of each adult resident of High Point and Fairmont Park, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of High Point and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference ad- vertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize them- selves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like High Point ,the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major department, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the com- mon intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVE- NUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community,
11
INTRODUCTION
depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of High Point and vicinity.
The High Point Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the High Point City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the High Point Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 600 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publisher appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confi- dence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

HIGH POINT TODAY Origin of Name
High Point derived its name from a statement made by Captain Gregg, chief engineer of the surveyors of the North Carolina Railroad, from Goldsboro to Charlotte (now leased by the Southern Railway), in which he said, "This is the highest point along the whole survey, so we will mark it High Point."
Industry
High Point occupies the unique position of being the Southern center of two major industries-furniture and hosiery.
The first furniture factory was established in 1888-today there are 84 fur- niture factories located here manufacturing a complete line of wooden house- hold furniture including office desks and other equipment.
Located here are two furniture exhibition buildings for the exhibition of furniture, rugs, floor coverings and other household furnishings to the dealer- the fourteen-story Southern Furniture Exposition Building and the Tomlinson Exhibition Building, with combined floor space of 463,890 square feet. Four hundred fifty manufacturers of household furnishings exhibit their products
