INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directory, (pub- lishers of the High Point City Directory since 1933), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1955 edition of the High Point City Directory, which also includes Fairmont Park and Oakview. A new feature, the listing of telephone numbers in the Directory of Householders, marks this edition.

Confidence in the growth of High Point's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting High Point to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the High Point Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per - taining to the community.

Five Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and pro- fessional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that shows the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of High Point, Fairmont Park and Oakview, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.

II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on golden- rod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of High Point, Fairmont Park and Oakview. The adver- tisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive com - munity like High Point, the necessity of having this kind of information im- mediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major department, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the com - mon intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this sec- tion the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. A special feature of this section is the designation of tenant -owned homes and a new feature is the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE GUIDE, on blue paper, is the fifth major department.

IV

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, de - picting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a busi- ness location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Di- rectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of High Point and vicinity.

The High Point Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the High Point City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the High Point Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 600 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confi- dence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

HIGH POINT TODAY Origin of Name

High Point derived its name from a statement made by Captain Gregg, chief engineer of the surveyors of the North Carolina Railroad, from Goldsboro to Charlotte (now leased by the Southern Railway); in which he said, "This is the highest point along the whole survey, so we will mark it High Point. "

Industry

High Point occupies the unique position of being the Southern center of two major industries-furniture and hosiery.

The first furniture factory was established in 1888 -today there are 100 furni - ture factories located here manufacturing a complete line of wooden household furniture including office desks and other equipment.

Located here are five. furniture exhibition buildings for the exhibition of furniture, rugs, floor coverings and other household furnishings to the dealer - the fourteen-story Southern Furniture Exposition Building, the Tomlinson Ex- hibition Building, the Merchandise Mart, the Southeastern Furniture Building and the Manufacturers Furniture Market, with combined floor space of 569, 890 square feet. Over 500 manufacturers of household furnishings exhibit their prod- ucts in this-The Southern Furniture and Rug Market.

The daily capacity of the 29 hosiery mills of High Point exceeds 50, 000 dozen pairs of hose. The manufacture of hosiery ranges from infants' hose to full- fashioned hose, the volume in men's half hose being predominant. First hosiery mill established in 1905.

There is a wide diversity of manufacturing in High Point-in addition to 100 furniture factories and 29 hosiery mills, there are 213 other diversified manu- facturing plants. Among these are plants manufacturing: Overalls, work shirts, men's summer clothing, mattresses, box springs, pillows, veneers, plywoods, artglass, paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, sealers, stains, fillers, under - coats and reducers, bobbin heads, shuttle blocks, building material, mirrors, glass furniture and novelties, toys, hosiery transfers, embossers' labels and seals, silk and rayon weaving, hosiery and underwear yarns, dyes, chemicals and textile oil specialties, paper boxes, corrugated shipping containers, tele- vision cabinets and a variety of other products.

The manufacturer will find in High Point many advantages so necessary for successful and profitable operation (this is proved by the successful operation of plants now located here). Among these are climate (good living and working conditions); availability of intelligent native labor, 79. 8 % native white, 19. 7 % Negro, 0. 5 % foreign-born; harmonious industrial relations; efficient public utilities; adequate electric power, and modern municipal facilties.

XI

INTRODUCTION

Transportation

Located on main line of the Southern Railway System between Washington, D. C. and Atlanta, Ga.

On the High Point, Thomasville & Denton Railroad, a locally-owned and suc- cessful short-line railroad connecting, through the Winston-Salem Southbound Railroad, with the Norfolk & Western Railway, the Atlantic Coast Line Rail- road and the Norfolk Southern Railroad, with through rates and service applying.

Air service through the Greensboro-High Point Airport is furnished by East- ern Air Lines main line, Capital Air Lines and Piedmont Airlines.

Sixteen motor-freight lines operate out of High Point.

Charter and Form of Government

The original charter of the City of High Point was granted by the State Legis- lature in 1859. The present council-manager form of government was inaugu- rated by charter amendments in 1915 and 1931.

The present charter provides for a city council consisting of a mayor and eight councilmen.

High Point is operated under a modern city-manager charter which places responsibility for efficient operation of all departments upon the city manager and delegates to him authority commensurate with such responsibility.

The charter is unique in that the debt-creating power of the City Council is very greatly restricted. No new indebtedness may be created in any fiscal year in excess of 50 % of the amount retired during the previous year, except by vote of the citizens. Under this plan, the indebtedness of the City will undoubt- edly decrease each year, and at the same time, such limitation will not prevent the logical development of municipal facilities.

Electric Distribution System

The City operates its residential and commercial electric system with con- siderable net profit. The City's charges for electric current sold to its resi- dential and commercial consumers are no greater than those charged for simi- lar classes of service rendered by private utility companies operating in this area.
