INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, (pub- lishers of the High Point City Directory since 1933), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1956 edition of the High Point City Directory, which also includes Fairmont Park and Oakview.
Confidence in the growth of High Point's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting High Point to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the High Point Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)
The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that shows the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of High Point, Fairmont Park and Oakview and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on gold- enrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of High Point, Fairmont Park and Oakview. The ad- vertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represent- ed. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buy- ers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like High Point, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evi- denced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major depart- ment, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all busi- ness and professional concerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indis- pensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this sec- tion the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num - bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. A special feature of this sectionis the designation of tenant-owned homes.
839669
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE GUIDE, on blue paper, is the fifth major department.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of High Point and vicinity.
The High Point Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the High Point City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the High Point Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 600 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confi- dence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

HIGH POINT TODAY
Origin of Name
High Point derived its name from a statement made by Captain Gregg, chief engineer of the surveyors of the North Carolina Railroad, from Goldsboro to Charlotte (now leased by the Southern Railway); in which he said, "This is the highest point along the whole survey, so we will mark it High Point. "
Industry
High Point occupies the unique position of being the Southern center of two major industries-furniture and hosiery manufacturing.
The first furniture factory was established in 1888-today there are 86 furniture factories located here manufacturing a complete line of wooden household furniture including office desks and other equipment.
Located here are five furniture exhibition buildings for the exhibition of furniture, rugs, floor coverings and other household furnishings to the dealer - the fourteen-story Southern Furniture Exposition Building, the Tomlinson Ex- hibition Building, the Merchandise Mart, the Southeastern Furniture Building and the Manufacturers Furniture Market, with combined floor space of 569, 890 square feet. Over 500 manufacturers of household furnishings exhibit their products in this-This Southern Furniture and Rug Market.
The daily capacity of the 34 hosiery mills of High Point exceeds 50, 000 dozen pairs of hose. The manufacture of hosiery ranges from infants' hose to full- fashioned hose, the volume in men's half hose being predominant. First hosiery mill established in 1905.
There is a wide diversity of manufacturing in High Point-in addition to 86 furniture factories and 34 hosiery mills, there are 207 other diversified manu- facturing plants. Among these are plants manufacturing: Overalls, work shirts, men's summer clothing, mattresses, box springs, pillows, veneers, plywoods, art glass, paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, sealers, stains, fillers, undercoats and reducers, bobbin heads, shuttle blocks, building material, mir - rors, glass furniture and novelties, toys, hosiery transfers, embossers' labels and seals, silk and rayon weaving, hosiery and underwear yarns, dyes, chemi- cals and textile oil specialties, paper boxes, corrugated shipping containers, television cabinets and a variety of other products.
XI
INTRODUCTION
The manufacturer will find in High Point many advantages so necessary for successful and profitable operation (this is proved by the successful operation of plants now located here).
