INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Jacksonville City Directory since 1957) present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1958 edition of the Jacksonville City Directory, which also includes the rural routes emanating from the Jacksonville Post Office. Confidence in the growth of Jacksonville's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Jacksonville to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Jacksonville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more com- plete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Jacksonville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Direc- tory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an im- portant role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Jacksonville and vicinity and on the Jacksonville rural routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant- owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community,

depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Jack- sonville and vicinity.

The Jacksonville Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Jacksonville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progres- sive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION

Area of North Carolina, 37 miles southwest of New Bern and 51 miles northeast of Wilmington.

The Government of the town of Jacksonville is the Council Manager form. The Mayor is elected at large, and the four members of the Council are elected from the four wards of the Town. The Town Manager is appointed by the Council and is charged with the administration of the Town's affairs and is responsible to the Council. To advise and assist the council and the Manager, there are the following advisory commissions and boards. The Planning Board, the Recreation Commission, Cemetery Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustments.

Jacksonville boasts an alert daily Morning newspaper, which subscribes to several of the noted news services. Being a Morning paper, its heavy circulation gets the news to the many subscribers early enough to keep the population posted on news ordinarily published in evening papers.

Two modern radio stations serve the Jacksonville area. WJNC has been on the air since 1945, and WLAS opened during 1956. They have always been alert and quick to serve the best interest of Jacksonville and Onslow County. TV re- ception reaches Jacksonville from at least four regular stations.

Jacksonville has four fine schools, of which twoare public primary schools, and one public high school, and one private primary school, (Catholic).

The public primary, the Clyde Erwin School in New River, just recently constructed, is considered one of the finest schools in the nation. Jacksonville is truly an example of this nations greatness in that freedom of religion is prac- ticed. We have the Methodist, Paptist, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Mormon and Espicopal Churches.

In Jacksonville, business firms offering all types of merchandise and service, total in excess of 400.

There are 206 buses leaving and entering Jacksonville daily, the Atlantic Coast Line offers daily freight service and the Marine Corps has about com- pleted passenger service between Camp Lejeune, and Cherry Point, N. C., which will be leased to one of the regular lines and afford train service for the many Marines to any point.

Tourist accommodations in Jacksonville are numerous. There are several hotels and many fine tourist courts, one of which is the second largest in the United States and known as the finest between Washington, D. C. and Jackson- ville, Florida.

Jacksonville has a new county hospital completely equipped with modern facilities to assist our doctors in keeping our citizens in good health. Among the new items is an X-Ray Machine, presented through the local Cancer Society by the citizens and Marines of Onslow County. In addition to its fine surgical and mechanical instruments and machines, the hospital is capably staffed with out- standing men and women who are our doctors, nurses and managerial staff.

Metropolitan Jacksonville is the fastest growing community in the State of North Carolina. The growth has been of such proportions that it is almost im- possible to give in any concise manner, an idea of all the changes that have occurred and to interpret what all the changes in the civic, social and business life of the city mean to those who live here.

HISTORIC JACKSONVILLE AND ONSLOW COUNTY

Formed in 1734 from New Hanover County, Onslow County was named for Sir Arthur Onslow who was speaker of the House of Commons in the British Parliament.

President George Washington passed through Onslow County on his Southern Tour in 1791, enroute to Wilmington. He took breakfast at "Everett's" near Richlands, had dinner at Captain James Foy's at Rick's Run, and spent the night at "Sage's Ordinary", in the Southern part of the county. President Washington wrote in his diary, "The whole road from New Bern to Wilmington (except in a few places of small extent) passes through the most barren country I have ever beheld".

Two Governors of North Carolina may be claimed by Onslow County. Edward B. Dudley, elected from New Hanover County, the first governor elected by the direct vote of the people served two terms from 1836 to 1841. He was born and reared in Onslow County. Governor Daniel C. Russell, born in Brunwick County, was the son of two Onslow natives, and spent his childhood at the Onslow home of his grandfather, David W. Sander, a member of the Council of State. He served from 1897 to 1901.

New River, despite its name is known to be the mouth of one of the oldest rivers in America. It is the only large river in North Carolina with headwaters and mouth in the same county, Onslow, and it is one of the few rivers of any size in the United States which flows due north. Its three forks are also unusual that they bring little water in to feed the main stream. Another peculiarity is that it seems to be all mouth and nothing much more. The estuary is about 20 miles long, and three to five miles wide.

The first Court House for Onslow County is believed to have been located at Court House Bay, six miles from the mouth of New River. The second County Seat and Court House were on northeast branch about 20 miles from the mouth of New River, where the U. S. Marine Corps Officers Quarters at Paradise Point, Camp Lejeune, are now located. The third Court House location at Johnstown, named for Royal Governor Garriel Johnston, was about 14 milesfrom the mouth of New River. The town failed to grow and most of the buildings were destroyed by the hurricane in 1752. The last and present Court House site was named "Wantland Ferry" for James Wantland, who in 1756 donated an acre of land "Convenient to a good many" for the Court House. Four edifices preceded the present structure erected in 1904 and remedied in 1951.
