INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Jacksonville City Directory since 1957), presents to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Jacksonville City Directory, which also includes Country Club Acres, Forest Grove Subdivision, Forest Hills Subdivision and Oak Grove Subdivision.

Confidence in the growth of Jacksonville's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Jacksonville to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Jacksonville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order: --

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Jacksonville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Jacksonville, Country Club Acres, Forest Grove Subdivision, Forest Hills Subdivision and Oak Grove Subdivision, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corpora- tion in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant- owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Jacksonville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Greater Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progres- sive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Metropolitan Jacksonville is one of the fastest growing communities in the State of North Carolina. The growth has been of such proportions that it is al- most impossible to give in any concise manner, an idea of all the changes that have occurred and to interpret what all the changes in the civic, social and busi- ness life of the City mean to those who live here.

ONSLOW COUNTY

General Review

Onslow County was formed in 1734 from New Hanover County and was named for Sir Arthur Onslow who was speaker of the House of Commons in the British Parliament.

The first Court House for Onslow County is believed to have been located at Court House Bay, six miles from the mouth of New River. The second County Seat and Court House were on Northeast Branch about twenty miles from the mouth of New River where the U. S. Marine Corps Officers Quarters at Paradise Point, Camp Lejeune are now located.

The third Court House location at Johnstown, named for Royal Governor Gabriel Johnston was about 14 miles from the mouth of New River. The town failed to grow and most of the buildings were destroyed by a hurricane in 1752.

The fourth and present site of the Onslow County Court House was named "Wantland Ferry" for James Wantland, who in 1756 donated an acre of land "con- venient to many" for the Court House. Four edifices preceded the present struc- ture erected in 1904 and remodeled in 1951.

Records in the Register of Deeds Office at the Onslow County Court House date back to 1713.

President George Washington passed through Onslow County on his southern tour in 1791, enroute to Wilmington. He took breakfast at "Everetts" near Rich- lands, and dinner at Captain James Foy's at Ricks Run and spent the night at "Sage's Ordinary," in the southern part of Onslow County. President Washing- ton wrote in his diary about this part of his trip.

Two governors of North Carolina may be claimed by Onslow County.

Edward B. Dudley, elected from New Hanover County, the first governor elected by the direct vote of the people, served two terms from 1836 to 1841. He was born and reared in Onslow County.

Governor Daniel C. Russell, born in Brunswick County, was the son of two Onslow County natives and spent his childhood at the home of his grandfather, David W. Sander a member of the Council of State. Governor Russell served from 1897 to 1901.

New River despite its name, is known to be the mouth of one of the oldest rivers in America. It is the only large river in North Carolina with headwaters and mouth in the same County, Onslow, and it is one of the few rivers of any size in the United States which flows almost due South. Its three forks are also unusual in that they bring little water in to feed the main stream. Another pe- culiarity is that it seems to be all mouth and nothing much more. The estuary is about 20 miles long and in places three to five miles wide.

Wars have seriously affected the New River Region throughout their early history.

INTRODUCTION

After the Indian Wars, Spanish Buccaneers and pirates beset the region. During the Spanish invasion in the 1740's, prisoners were brought into the On- slow County Section through Bear Inlet.

Henry Morgan and his pirate associates are said to have used New River Inlet as a hideout.
