INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Direc- tories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1950 e- dition of the Kannapolis City Directory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and the rural routes emanating from the Kannapolis Post Office. This is the first Hill Directory of Kannapolis, and is completely stand- ardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Direc- tory is a mirror truly reflecting Kannapolis to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the es- timation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Di- rectory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kannapolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Six Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)

The six major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and busi- ness and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city. A special feature of this section is the designation of the number of children under Directory-listing age in each household.

II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, print- ed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufac- turing, business and professional interests of Kannapolis. The adver- tisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business re- presented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a sur- vey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of sup- ply. In a progressive community like Kannapolis, the necessity of hav- ing this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third ma- jor department, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indis- pensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Di-

rectory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classi- fied Business Directory than through any other medium.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, onpink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, fol- lowed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order un- der the name of each street, and the names of the householders and con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE KANNAPOLIS RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on white paper.

VI. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the sixth major department.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the com- munity, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an ed- ucational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Kannapolis and vicinity. There are more than 600 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which the Hill Directory Co. is a member.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION

General Review

Astride the Cabarrus-Rowan county line, Kannapolis is thirty miles north of Charlotte. U. S. Highway 29 runs a few blocks east of the principal business district, while 29-A is the town's main street.

There are ample transportation facilities. The New York-New Orleans line of the Southern Railway and Carolina Coach-National Trail- ways buses serve Kannapolis.

Center of social and religious life in Kannapolis is the handsome and spacious Cannon Memorial Y. M. C. A.

The Post Office Department estimates the present population to be 35,000.

Kannapolis' 340 retail firms did $28,000,000 worth of business in 1948. Effective purchasing power of Cabarrus County that year was $862 per capita, which compared favorably with state and national av- erages.

The people here are church-goers. They make up more than 50 congregations.

And they have a keen civic spirit, working through such organi- zations as the Masons, Odd Fellows, Woodmen of the World, Red Men, Patriotic Order Sons of America, Junior Order United American Me- chanics, Business Men's Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lions International, Pilot Club, Credit Women's Breakfast Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries, War Dads, War Mothers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Independent Student Aid Association, Red Cross and dozens of fellowship clubs for all ages.

The heart of the community is the Cannon Memorial Y.M.C.A., which claims one of the largest memberships under one roof in the world- wide organization, At the end of the 1950 campaign, the rolls listed the names of 9,500 men, women, boys and girls.

It operates in a Colonial-style structure that cost $500,000 in the years before World War II, when money went much farther than it goes today. Facilities include two large gymnasiums, three kitchens, a li- brary that ranks with the finest in North Carolina, a spacious swimming pool, a health club, handball and volleyball courts, bowling alleys, bil- liard and tennis tables and numerous club and conference rooms.

INTRODUCTION

LLST

LARGEST MANUFACTUR

This large neon sign overlooking the Cannon Mills lake portrays the famous trademark of Cannon Products.

Kannapolis' public schools bow to none in North Carolina. En- rollment in 1949-50 set a record -- 5,419 boys and girls.

Cannon High is known widely for its diversified courses, offer- ing: The prescribed academic studies, home economics, vocational courses, art, dramatics, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.

Arthur W. Rohr is director of the public school music program, which begins in the first grade and extends through Cannon High's senior class. His organizations stand out in high school competition, and last summer the Cannon High band represented North Carolina at the Lions International convention in New York City.

Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manufacturer of household textiles -- towels, bath mats, wash cloths, dish towels, sheets and pillowcases, also nylon stockings.

The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills.

Looking south on West Ave., this scene depicts new Colonial-type buildings now being erected in the multi-million-dollar expansion program under way in Kannapolis.

XII

INTRODUCTION

The First Baptist Church, located in the heart of the "Towel City," is one of many churches serving residents of Kannapolis.

Kannapolis, which derives its name from the Greek world mean- ing "loom city," was founded by the late James W. Cannon in 1905, when the great demand for Cannon towels prompted him to purchase a 600- acre tract of land in this section for the location of a new plant.

The village mushroomed.

Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.

He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become na- tionally-famous.

After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.

The Cannon organization now employs 21,000 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 15 to more than 55 years. Those who have been with the company 25 years or longer are entertained at loyalty banquets each autumn.

Approximately 1,000 boys and girls of Kannapolis are enrolled at the J. W. Cannon High School, which includes complete vocational train-

ing.

XIII

INTRODUCTION

Little Mt. Vernon in the City Park is a memorial to the more than 4,000 local men and women who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.

Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model man- ufacturing town -- a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.

In 1937, the fiftieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi-million-dollar construction and remodelingprogram. This expansion, interrupted by World War II, is still in progress.

Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williamsburg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.

A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial-type architecture.

Mary Ella Hall, named in honor of the wife of the "Towel City" founder, is one of the buildings housing employees of Cannon Mills.
