INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, pre- sent to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1956 edition of the Kanna- polis City Directory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and the rural routes emanating from the Kannapolis Post Office.
Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Kannapolis to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kan- napolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the following order: -
I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that shows the name, marital status, occu- pation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, China Grove, Landis and Rural Routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on gold- enrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Kannapolis and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Kannapolis, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major depart- ment, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous in- terests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fifth major department.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Kanna- polis and vicinity. There are more than 700 of these Directory Libraries, in- stalled and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which the Hill Directory Co. is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with the assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

XI
INTRODUCTION
It operates in a Colonial-style structure that cost $500,000 in the years before World War II, when money went much farther than it goes today. Facilities include two large gymnasiums, three kitchens, a library that ranks with the finest in North Carolina, a spacious swimming pool, a health club, handball and volleyball courts, bowling alleys, billiard and tennis tables and numerous club and conference rooms.
Kannapolis' public schools bow to none in North Carolina. Enrollment is a record 5,400 boys and girls.
A. L. Brown Senior High School is known widely for its diversified courses, offering: The prescribedacademic studies, home economics, vocational courses, art, dramatics, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.
The public school music program begins in the first grade and extends through Cannon High's senior class. The organizations stand out in high school competition, and in July, 1949, the Cannon High band represented North Caro- lina at the Lions International convention in New York City. The band is scheduled to participate in The Lions Convention in Miami in 1956.
Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manu- facturer of household textiles-towels, bath mats, wash cloths, dish towels, sheets and pillowcases, also nylon stockings.
The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills.
Kannapolis, whichderives its name from the Greek word meaning "loom city," was founded by the late James W. Cannon in 1905, when the great demand for Cannon towels prompted him to purchase a 600-acre tract of land in this section for the location of a new plant.

XII
INTRODUCTION
Trinity Methodist Church, built at a cost of approximately half-million dollars in 1954-1955. It is one of the many churches serving residents of Kannapolis.
A. L. Brown High School (aerial view). This is the Senior High School with ap- proximately 800 boys and girls enrolled which includes complete vocational training. (More than 5000 students are enrolled in all the city schools).
The village mushroomed.
Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.
He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become nationally-famous.
After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.
The Cannon organization now employs 20,000 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 15 to more than 60 years. Those who have been with the company 25 years or. longer are entertained at loyalty banquets each autumn.
Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model manufacturing town-a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.
In 1937, the fifieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi-million-dollar construction and remodeling program, This expansion, in- terrupted by World War II, is still in progress.
INTRODUCTION
XIII
Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williams- burg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.
A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial- type architecture.
Little Mt. Vernon in the City Park is a memorial to the more than 4,000 local men and women who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
