INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, pre- sent to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1959 edition of the Kanna - polis City Directory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and the rural routes emanating from the Kannapolis Post Office.
Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and - in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec - tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Kannapolis to the world.
The enviable position occupies by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kannapolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :--
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the namesand addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical or- der under appropriate headings -- a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Kannapolis, the ne- cessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, China Grove, Landis and on the Kannapolis Rural Routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department, showing a section for Kannapolis followed by a sepa - rate section for China Grove and Landis.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community,

depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Kanna - polis and vicinity.
The Kannapolis Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Kannapolis City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Kannapolis Merchants Assn Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with the assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

FRER
Cannon Memorial Y. M.C.A. center of social and religious life in Kannapolis, N. C., named in memory of the late James Wm. Cannon, founder of Cannon Mills.
The heart of the community is the Cannon Memorial Y. M. C. A. , which claims one of the largest memberships under one roof in the world-wide organization. At the end of the 1957 campaign, the rolls listed the names of 12,566 men, women, boys and girls.
It operates in a Colonial-style structure that cost $500,000 in the years be- fore World War II, when money went much farther than it goes today. Facilities include two large gymnasiums, three kitchens, a library that ranks with the finest in North Carolina, a spacious swimming pool, a health club, handball and volleyball courts, bowling alleys, billiard and tennis tables and numerous club and conference rooms.

X
INTRODUCTION
Kannapolis' publie schools bow to none in North Carolina. Enrollment is a record 5,600 boys and girls.
A. L. Brown Senior High School is known widely for its diversified courses, offering: The prescribed academie studies, home economies, vocational courses, art, dramaties, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.
The publie school music program begins in the first grade and extends through Cannon High's senior class. The organizations stand out in high school competition, and in July, 1949, the Cannon High band represented North Carolina at the Lions International convention in New York City. The band is scheduled to participate in the Lions Convention in Miami in 1956.
Aerial view of business district and Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis, N. C.
Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manu- facturer of household textiles-towels, bath mats, wash cloths, dish towels, sheets and pilloweases, also nylon stockings.
The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills. The village mushroomed.
Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.
He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become nationally-famous. After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.
The Cannon organization now employs approximately 15,500 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 15 to more than 60 years. Those who have been with the company 25 years or longer are entertained at loyalty banquets each autumn.
Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model manufacturing town-a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.
XI
INTRODUCTION
In 1937, the fiftieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi-million-dollar construction and remodeling program. This expansion, interrupted by World War II, is still in progress.
Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williams- burg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.
A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial- type architecture,
Little Mt. Vernon in the City Park is a memorial to the more than 4,000 local men and women who served in the Armed Forces during World War IL
