INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Kannapolis Directory since 1950), presents to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Kannapolis City Directory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Kannapolis to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kannapolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic informa- tion pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order: --

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Kannapolis. The advertisements are in- dexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Kannapolis, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major depart- ment, printed on canary paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, and the name, of- ficial personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the com- munities.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE is the fourth major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant- owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major depart- ment, printed on blue paper, showing a section for Kannapolis followed by a separate section for China Grove and Landis.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Kan- napolis and vicinity.

The Kannapolis Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Kannapolis City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Kannapolis Merchants Assn. Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities and towns of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Di- rectory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with the assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

The late Mr. J. W. Cannon, founder of the Cannon Mills Co., purchased 600 acres for the Kannapolis site in 1905, began the construction of houses in 1907. Production at Plant No. 1 was begun during 1908.

Ação

A. L. Brown High School. This is the Senior High School with approximately 800 boys and girls enrolled which includes complete vocational training. (Approxi- mately 5,500 students are enrolled in all the city schools).

X

INTRODUCTION

Kannapolis' public schools bow to none in North Carolina. Enrollment is a record 5,600 boys and girls.

A. L. Brown Senior High School is known widely for its diversified courses, offering: The prescribed academic studies, home economics, vocational courses, art, dramatics, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.

The public school music program begins in the first grade and extends through senior class.

Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manu- facturer of household textiles -- towels, bath mats, wash cloths, dish towels, sheets and pillowcases, also nylon stockings.

The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills.

The village mushroomed.

Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.

He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become nationally-famous.

After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.

The Cannon organization now employs approximately 15,500 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 10 to more than 60 years. Those who have been with the company 25 years or longer are entertained at loyalty banquets each autumn.

Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model manufacturing town -- a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.

In 1937, the fiftieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi-million-dollar construction and remodeling program. This expansion, interrupted by World War II, is still in progress.

Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williams- burg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.

A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial- type architecture.
