INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Leaksville, Spray and Draper Directory since 1958), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Leaksville, Spray and Draper City Directory, which also includes Rural Route Residents.
Confidence in the growth of Leaksville, Spray and Draper's industry, population and wealth, and in the ad- vancement of their civic and social activities, will be main- tained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Leaksville, Spray and Draper to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Leaks- ville, Spray and Draper Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the commu- nities.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Leaksville, Spray and Draper. The ad- vertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In progressive commu- nities like Leaksville, Spray and Draper, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major department, printed on canary paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activ- ities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Busi- ness Directory than through any other medium.
III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record

INTRODUCTION
in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Leaksville, Spray and Draper, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the commu- nities.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the communities, depicting in unbiased terms what they have to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Leaks- ville, Spray and Draper.
The Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Leaks- ville, Spray and Draper City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Historical Sketch Based On Writings Of The Late Judge Henry P. Lane, of Leaksville, N. C.
The Towns of Leaksville, Spray and Draper have come to be known as the Tri-Cities of Rockingham County, North Carolina. This is proper, as they are so intimately linked in their industrial, social and cultural interest as to form one Metropolitan area. Leaksville was incorporated in 1874; Draper in 1949; and Spray in 1951.
These towns are in an historic area. Here Colonel Wil- liam Byrd, the famous Virginian, came in 1728 when he led the commission running the dividing line between Virginia and Carolina. In 1733 he received his grant of twenty thou- sand acres, and named it the "Land of Eden," and said in his immortal book, it was the most beautiful section he has ever seen. All of Spray and Draper, and much of Leaksville lie within the confines of Byrd's tract. When Leaksville's radio station, the first in Rockingham county, went on the air in December, 1946 the call letters, with perfect propriety, were WLOE, representing the "Wonderful Land of Eden."
Leaksville is the oldest of the triplets; and one of the oldest towns in the county. Some years prior to 1797, John Leak had received from Robert Galloway, a large land owner, a tract of one hundred acres of land on the north side of the Dan River near the point where the Smith River runs into the Dan. By reason of the beauty and healthful- ness of the location Leak decided to promote a town here and had sold a number of lots. In 1797 the Legislative body of the State passed an act authorizing him to lay off a town site on his tract according to the plans drawn by a board of

commissioners named in the Act. This was done, and the town was named for Leak. Two streets running East and West, Washington and Jay, and three running North and South, Patrick, Henry and Hamilton were laid out, and on these streets lots were sold and the town grew up.
The first business houses, as well as residences, were erected on Henry Street, near the river where the Karastan rug mill and Bedspread mill now stand.
In 1812, with the creation of the Roanoke Navigation Co. boats began to ply the river from Weldon, N. C., up to Roanoke River to the Dan, thence up that stream to Leaks- ville, which became the head of navigation. This created a great boom in the town and a rapid growth. It became the trading center of a great section, extending to and across the Blue Ridge Mountains into Virginia.
Produce from this section, accumulated by the mer- chants, was conveyed from here down the river and the song of the boatmen, as they poled the long batteaux, heavily laden with tobacco, and other products along the Dan, were familiar sounds.
