INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the New Bern Directory since 1961), presents to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1964 edition of the New Bern City Directory, which includes Bridgeton, Country Club Heights and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of New Bern's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting New Bern to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the New Bern Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Di- rectory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the community, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the community. The Buyer's Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like New Bern, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Di- rectory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of New Bern, and the name, offi- cial personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major de- partment, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a

business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of New Bern and vicinity.

The New Bern Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the New Bern City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Greater New Bern Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns through- out the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

NEW BERN

CENTER OF HISTORY-PIVOT OF PROGRESS (Courtesy New Bern Chamber of Commerce)

This is the land where much of our history had its beginning, centered about New Bern, North Carolina's second oldest town, Colonial Center for business, culture, and political activity, the site of many of our "firsts." It is also a land of jet planes, trim modern boats, great modern highways and buildings -- a land where the pulse of Eastern North Carolina's great new era of development is strongly evident.

New Bern looks two ways, a fact which accounts for the stability and sound character of progress which is evident here. Important strides have been made in the development of the area's mineral, timber and agricultural resources. Diversification in agriculture and industry have dominated this growth. Yet, while New Bern's aggressive citizens push on toward greater progress in business, agriculture and industry, they have kept a firm grip on the cherished traditions of their rich history, preserving the best of the past for themselves, their descendents, and for welcomed visitors who come here from throughout the world.

Tryon Palace, called "the most beautiful building in the Colonial Americas," was built in pre-Revolutionary days by Royal Governor William Tryon as North Carolina's first fixed Colonial Capitol. Later it became the first Capitol of the State. Four State Governors were inaugurated there. Restored authentically by the Tryon Palace Commission, a State Agency, through gifts and bequests of the late Mrs. James Edwin Latham, and furnished with mid-18th century antiques, at a cost of more than $3,500,000, it is considered one of America's greatest showplaces. During the first 5 years it was opened to the public it attracted over 155,000 admiring visitors from all 50 states and 71 foreign countries.

New Bern is a sight-seer's paradise. Here are over 100 homes a century or more in age. The John Wright Stanly home, now a free library, is open daily. The Firemen's Museum (awarded the only prize by the American Association for State and Local History for the preservation of antiquities in 1957), Attmore- Oliver House, William Gaston House, Masonic Temples and nearby Fort Macon add points of interest.

Historic Tryon Palace erected 1767-70, destroyed by fire February 27, 1798, restored 1952-59. First Colonial and State Capitol in North Carolina and con- sidered the most beautiful building of its day.

Few cities anywhere afford more complete transportation than New Bern. By air, Piedmont Airlines maintains 8 scheduled flights from Simmons-Nott Airport daily, with 3 north bound, 3 south bound, 2 west bound, giving New Bern the best, most frequent air service of any small city in the country, with Craven - Pamlico- Carteret

Water commerce provides freight advantages enjoyed by few cities. New Bern is served by both the Neuse and Trent Rivers, with a minimum 12 foot channel which connects directly with the Intra-Coastal Waterway and the North Carolina State Deep-sea Port Terminal at nearby Morehead City.

SEWAGE DISPOSAL PLANT This modern 4 MGD trickling filter separate sludge digestion type plant was tied in to the City sewage system May 1st, 1964.

As County Seat of Craven County, New Bern draws many patrons from the county and neighboring counties. Its population was 11,815 by official count in 1940, with 16,467 population count in 1962. The inviting allure of the Neuse and Trent River Shores homesites has attracted many citizens, thereby creating an exodus of families adjacent to the city. Greater New Bern population, 19,096. The county official census in 1940 was 31,298, the official count in 1960 was 58,773. More that 150,000 people reside in the trading area.

There are 65 manufacturing establishments employing 2,004 workers who receive manual wages of more than $6,000,000. The annual operating cost of the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point is $76,000,000 of which 75 per cent is represented in payrolls. County retail sales were $72,574,867.00 in 1963.

New Bern's three banks (with branches in the county), and two Savings and Loan Associations with resources of more than $407,158,000 gives this area a sound financial basis for expansion.

Current industrial establishments include factories for making men's trousers, ladies' dresses, three commercial and pleasure boat manufacturers,
