INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., INC., publishers of Southeast- ern Directories, present to subscribers and the general pub- lic, this, the 1959 edition of the Raeford City Directory, which also includes the rural routes emanating from the Raeford Post Office.

This is the first Hill Directory of Raeford, and is com- pletely standardized according to the policies of the Asso- ciation of North American Directory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Raeford's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Raeford to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the pub- lishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Raeford Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-

1. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the ac- tivities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, like- wise grouped under appropriate headings, are the adver- tisements and business cards of firms and individuals desir- ing to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Raeford, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Raeford and on the Raeford rural routes, and the name, official person- nel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

INTRODUCTION

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their re- spective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Raeford and vicinity.

The Raeford Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Raeford City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Raeford Chamber of Commerce, for free refer- ence by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North Ameri- can Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the sys- tem is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Raeford Today

The Town of Raeford, named after two of the founding families, the McRaes and the Willifords, is today a bustling, thriving town of an estimated 3,800 people. The government census in 1950 placed the population at 2,030. In 10 years Rae- ford has almost doubled the population, has added two large industrial plants, many new businesses and has built, as a community project, a housing area of 150 homes.

Raeford lies on U. S. Highway 401, running north and south, a well traveled tourist and truck route, and on N. C. Highway 211, running east and west, used for travel to and from North Carolina's famous beach and fishing areas on the coast.

Its location is in a moderate climate zone, its many fine schools, churches, its up-to-date business district, the natur- al beauty that surrounds the town and the warm Scottish friendliness make Raeford one of the nicest towns in which to live and work.

Raeford Yesterday

The present site of Raeford is about two miles west of the original crossroads location before the turn of the century. In 1896 a boarding school, The Raeford Institute, was formed to provide education for the children of the area. It was from this small nucleus that the present day Raeford has devel- oped.

The land upon which Raeford lies was owned basically by three families, the McRaes, the Willifords and the Mc- Lauchlins. J. W. McLauchlin was instrumental in laying out the town; a fact for which the people of Raeford today are very proud. He made all of the streets broad and the busi- ness and residential lots large. People of Raeford are extra proud of the width of the Main Street, which is 90 feet from curb to curb. It is told that in laying out Main Street, Mr. McLauchlin wanted it wide enough so that a two mule team hitched to a wagon could turn around. Raeford's wide Main Street is the envy of many a larger town.

After the establishment of The Raeford Institute and the gradual development of the town, the state incorporated it in 1901. At that time it was located in Cumberland County and lay on the edge of Robeson County, but in 1911 the North Carolina General Assembly formed Hoke County from parts of both Cumberland County and Robeson County. Rae- ford was chosen as the County Seat.

Hoke County was named for General Robert F. Hoke, a Confederate leader born in North Carolina. He was so well thought of that it was established that he would take over the leadership of the Confederate Forces in the event of the death or ill health of General Robert E. Lee.

In 1918 the government purchased 92,000 acres of Hoke County land, about one third of the county, to increase the size of Ft. Bragg, when it was established as a permanent military base.

13

INTRODUCTION

The area around Raeford and Hoke County has its share of the history of our country. Many living in the county today are descendants of the first settlers. The area was settled principally by Scotch Highlanders who came because of the tyranny of the English rulers. These people brought their customs, habits and religion to the area.

One of the battles that decided the fate of North Caro- lina in the Revolutionary War was fought at McPhaul's Mill in 1781. Though the mill has since been removed the same pond is still located about five miles from Raeford.

Presbyterianism was the chief denomination for many years after the settling of the area and is still the biggest denomination in Hoke County. The early settlers established three churches. Longstreet Church was established in 1758 and is the oldest established church in the county. It was used by the congregation until the land it stood on was pur- chased by the government during the First World War. The church is now maintained by the government as a landmark.

Bethel Church was founded in 1776 and is located about two miles south of Raeford on U. S. Highway 401. It was here that General Sherman and his army camped for a couple of nights in 1865. The Bible in which he wrote some orders to the minister is preserved today in the Presbyterian History Gallery at Montreat.

Education in Raeford

Education has always been of prime importance in the area. The founding of the Raeford Institute in 1896 and the fact that the first Medical School in North Carolina was established in the area around 1850 by Dr. Hector McLean indicates the importance of education to the people of the area.

Hoke County today has one of the finest education sys- tems in North Carolina. The people of Hoke County this past year passed a $950,000 School Bond Issue to build a new high school and another grade school and improve the existing schools.

Agriculture

The first industry in Hoke County was turpentine, the by-product of the vast forests that covered the area. Turpen- tine distilleries sprang up in the district and as the woods were cut the land was turned to farm lands. For many years the principal crops were cotton and tobacco, but in the past few years small grain farms and hog and cattle raising have started to come into prominence.

Raeford lies on the edge of the Sandhill section of the Carolinas and a recent soil testing survey shows eleven different classifications of soil in Hoke County.

In 1957 Hoke County embarked on a vast Farm Improve- ment Program. This program has brought national recogni- tion to the area. This included the county being the first one in the United States to have a 100 percent soil test. The farm income was increased almost two and one half million dollars in 1958 over 1957.

Industry

As the wooded lands in the area were cut and farming began to take its place in the community small industries developed to handle these farm products. Cotton gins, ware-

houses, cotton oil mills and feed mills began their operations. Industry in Raeford today is a large and thriving part of the community. A concrete product plant, a woolen and synthetic cloth weaving plant, a turkey processing plant, lumber manufacturing plants and a covered rubber thread plant have been added in the past few years.

Recreation

Raeford lies in the heart of some of the best recreation land in the South. The weather is moderate the year round. It is located just a few miles from the famous golf courses of Pinehurst and Southern Pines. The hunting is some of the finest in North Carolina due to the closeness of the Ft. Bragg game refuge. There is plenty of fresh water fishing for the enthusiast. Many lakes, ponds and creeks dot the country- side. Raeford is located just one hundred miles from the fishing areas of the North Carolina coast.

Raeford welcomes those who want the conveniences of a large city with the friendliness and warmth of a small town. For further information write the Raeford Chamber of Com- merce, Inc.
