INTRODUCTION

Hill Directory Company, Inc. (publishers), presents to its sub- scribers and to the general public this (1928) edition of the Raleigh (City) Directory.

Confidence in the growth of Raleigh, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for truly the directory is a mirror reflecting Raleigh to the world.

The enviable place occupied by Hill's directories in offices, stores, libraries and homes throughout our country causes the publishers to forecast the belief that the Raleigh directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information of any and every kind pertaining to our city. With an unrivaled organization having the courteous and hearty co-operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labor will meet with the approval of every resident of the city.

POPULATION

The estimated population of Raleigh is 36,517, based on the number of individual names in the alphabetical section of the Directory, with due allowance for women and children, whose names are not included. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the Directory.

FOUR MAJOR DEPARTMENTS

The several essential departments are arranged in the following order:

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 21 to 80, printed on tinted paper, con- tains the advertisements of the leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Raleigh. These pages will be found particu- larly interesting and instructive to the substantial elements of the city. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by depart- ments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and as such merits a survey by all buyers keen to prime themselves on sources of supply. The city's activities, in many interesting phases, are inter- estingly pictured to reveal what it has in its show window. In an ambitious and progressive community like Raleigh the need of this kind of information readily at hand is very great and frequently pressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal patronage the City Directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.

11

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms, corporations is included in pages 81 to 652. (A new feature of this section is the inclusion of wives' names in parenthesis following that of the husband.)

THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSE- HOLDERS covers pages 653 to 780. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders and business con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 781 to 860. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory Section than through any other medium."

MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of resi- dence, as a business location, as an industrial site, and as an educa- tional center. To give emphasis to their desire to broadcast this in- formation over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the larger cities of the country, where they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Raleigh, for business men the country over realize that the City Di- rectory represents the community as it really is.

THE HILL'S DIRECTORY LIBRARY

There are over 400 of these Directory Libraries in the chain. One of them is maintained at the Chamber of Commerce. The publishers invite use of it by the public whenever in the need of information on other cities.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the patronage of those progressive business and professional men who have expressed their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

RALEIGH

The City of Raleigh, capital of the State, is the heart of North Carolina progress. It is a commercial and edu- cational center. Its growth and progress during the past few years has been rapid and substantial. Aside from its great advantages as a commercial and distributing center, which is responsible for its rapidly increased development, it is a city that abounds in historical traditions and is the pride of North Carolina. The estimated population is 35,000.

The Capital City

At no capital in the country are there more buildings or institutions connected with the State government than in Raleigh. These include the Capitol, which was built in 1840 of granite from a quarry that was owned by the State, con- sidered by architects to be one of the most perfect pieces of architecture in the country, the Administration Building, Agricultural Building, Hall of History, State Museum, State Departments Building, State Office Building, State Highway Commission Building, Governor's Mansion, State Prison, State Hospital for the Insane, State School for the White Blind, State School for the Colored Deaf Mutes, State Laboratory of Hygiene, State Confederate Soldiers' Home, North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, State Poultry Farm, State Experimental Farm and State Fair Grounds.

The Olivia Raney Library was a gift to the city by R. B. Raney, as a memorial to his wife. It is well equipped with both an adult and a children's department and contains 20,000 vol- umes. It is free to all white residents of Raleigh township.

There are five theatres, three movies and a city auditorium with seating capacity of 4000. Two public swimming pools, several swimming clubs and a country club with an eighteen- hole golf course.

Raleigh has full motorized fire department. The city ranks first-class as to insurance rates. The assessed prop- erty valuation in Raleigh is $50,000,000. This does not include any State property, the valuation of which is several millions. The assessed property valuation of Wake County is $182,426.00; area, 824 square miles.

gineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, highway engineering, chemistry, dyeing, agricultural en- gineering, textile engineering, agricultural economics and business administration. It also offers practical economics and business administration and practical training in many branches of construction work.

Meredith College is the largest Baptist college for women in the State. It offers four general courses, conferring the A. B. and B. S. degrees and giving diplomas in music and art. A graduate from Meredith is accepted in Northern universities.

St. Mary's School for Girls is the largest Episcopal school for girls in the United States. The school offers prepara- tory work and two years college work, giving diplomas in music, art, home economics, business and expression. It was founded in 1842.

This company also operates the gas plants in Raleigh

15

and Durham. The gas supply in Raleigh amounts to 800,000 cubic feet daily.

Train Service

Raleigh is located on three railroads: Seaboard Air Line Railway, Norfolk-Southern and Southern. These railroads lead to all directions and afford excellent facilities for the business and shopping public. There are twenty passenger trains daily and very good freight and passenger service.

Distribution Facilities

Raleigh is the distributing center for a large territory, principally eastern Carolina. In addition to three rail- roads radiating in all directions there are 2,000 miles of hard surface roads within a 100 miles radius and a popu- lation in this same territory of 1,802,000 (U. S. Census). Competitive freight rates between the ports of Norfolk to the north, Wilmington to the east and Charleston to the south, with local distribution freight rates comparing fav- orably with those of any Southern State.

Raleigh is neither east nor west. It stands at the cross- roads, logically situated to serve economically a wide area, with easy access to the industrial Piedmont section and agricultural east.

Raleigh wholesalers are now distributing: adding ma- chines, auto accessories, automobile tires, barber supplies, bread, builders' supplies, cakes, candies, canned products, cash registers, drugs, farm implements, feeds, flour, gro- ceries, hardware, ice cream, lumber, machinery, mill sup- plies, meats, office furniture, office supplies, oils, optical supplies, paper, paints, plumbing and heating supplies, produce, provisions, road machinery, refrigerators, school books, tobaccos, sash and doors.

The platform facilities of the three railroads here will accommodate seventy-four cars. The daily number of package cars received and forwarded by the three railroads will average seventy-eight.

Highways

Raleigh is located on Federal Interstate Highway No. 1, which is the principal highway from Maine to Florida. The Capital to Capital, Calhoun, LaFayette and Bankhead high- ways also connect at Raleigh, the Capital of the Good Roads State. Interstate No. 1 is the great North and South tourist route, which brings a large tourist patronage to this city.

Agriculture

Raleigh is located in the center of a rich farming country. Here lands have doubled and in some instances tre bled in
