INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1938 edition of the Raleigh City Directory. Two new features, the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having tele- phones, mark this edition.
Confidence in the growth of Raleigh's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Di- rectory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Raleigh to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled or- ganization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Raleigh Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic in- formation pertaining to the city.
Population
The population of Raleigh is estimated at 53,640, based on the number of personal names in the Alphabetical sec- tion of the Directory, with due allowance for those under Directory age. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are con- cerned, is included in the Directory, and, likewise, in the population estimate.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 25 to 580, on white paper. This is the only record in exist- ence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Raleigh, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 581 to 713. In this section the names of the streets are ar- ranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order un- der the name of each street, and the names of the house- holders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Two new features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, beginning opposite page 716 and separately paged from 1 to 42, on goldenrod paper, con- tains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, busi-

INTRODUCTION
ness and professional interests of Raleigh. The advertise- ments are indexed under headings descriptive of the busi- ness represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize them- selves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Raleigh, the necessity of having this kind of informa- tion immediately available, is obvious. General apprecia- tion of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 759 to 839, on white paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in al- phabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the com- mercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Raleigh.
The Raleigh Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Raleigh City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, for free ref- erence by the general public. This is one of more than 475 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North Am- erican Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
NORTH CAROLINA STATE CAPITOL
HISTORIC RALEIGH
Raleigh abounds in historic eminence and noteworthy tradition. The first English settlement in America was made at Roanoke Island on the coast of North Carolina by Sir Walter Raleigh. The capital city of the state was named in his honor and in memory of this achievement.
The land upon which Raleigh had its beginning was purchased in 1792 as a location for the establishment of the state capital. The first capitol building was completed in 1794 and destroyed by fire in 1831. The present building, over 100 years old, is a recognized example of Doric archi- tecture with few equals. It is noted for its beauty and design.
The 17th President of the U. S., Andrew Johnson, was born here. This famous old home now stands as a shrine in Pullen Park.
The State Hall of History here, with its collection of North Carolina historical records and important archives, attracts much interest.
Wakefield, the home of Joel Lane, erected in 1760, is owned and preserved by the Carolina Dames. This colonial home was erected in the old town of Bloomsbury, which was the county seat of Wake County in 1771.
The oldest bank building in North Carolina still stands on the property of Christ Church. It is the present rectory. It was built in 1795 as the State Bank.
Many visitors in Raleigh are likewise interested in monuments and memorials of famous North Carolinians on Capitol Square and in State department buildings.
Three points of special beauty in Raleigh are Dix Hill, Country Club, and the Federal Cemetery.

INTRODUCTION
A CENTER OF EDUCATION
Raleigh, with six colleges and an excellent public school system, has long been recognized as an outstanding center of education.
The North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering was established by legislative enactment in 1889. It is one of the leading agricultural and mechanical colleges in the South. There are 30 major buildings in the plant. It had an enrollment-constantly growing-of 2,027 in 1937. It embraces four schools-Agriculture and Forestry, Engi- neering, Science and Business and Textile.
Meredith College, a Baptist college for women, was opened in 1897. For many years it was located near the Capitol and now occupies a modern plant completed in 1925, two miles from the city on the Hillsboro Road. Courses are offered in arts, sciences and music. The enrollment in 1937 was 544.
St. Mary's School and Junior College is owned by the Episcopal Church of the Carolinas. The highest standards are maintained, with all academic courses fully accredited by the Southern Association. The annual sessions offer the students 35 weeks of classroom work. 'An average of twenty states are represented in annual enrollment, which, in 1937, was 282.
Peace, a junior college for women, owned by the Pres- byterians of North Carolina, was opened in 1872. It offers standard and general junior college courses, college prepara- tory courses, and special courses in art, music, home economics, and commercial subjects. A number of modern buildings have been added recently, and the enrollment has grown rapidly. In 1937 it was 288.
The North Carolina School for the White Blind was es- tablished by legislative enactment in 1845. The present plant was completed in 1923 at a cost of $1,300,000. It is a stand- ard high school and the only one of its type in the U. S. with this rating. It specializes in vocational training.
The well-equipped and modern public school system of Raleigh has 18 buildings, including two high schools. There is also one parochial school.
King's Business College and Hardbarger's Secretarial School are two well-organized colleges here for business training.
St. Augustine's College (Episcopal) for colored men and women was opened in 1868. It includes the Bishop Tuttle School and the St. Agnes Training School for Nurses. It has 110 acres of land in the northeast section of the city. St. Agnes Hospital is operated in conjunction with this institu- tion.
The State School for the Negro Deaf and Dumb was established in 1868. A new plant erected at a cost of $250,- 000, is located on Highway No. 10, three miles southeast of the city.
Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the oldest institu- tion in the South for the education of colored men and women. The university has 11 buildings. Degrees of A.B. and B.S. are conferred.
