INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of South- eastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1940 edition of the Raleigh City Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Raleigh's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Raleigh to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled or- ganization, and having had the courteous and hearty coopera- tion of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Raleigh Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per- taining to the city.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 25 to 560, on white paper. This is the only record in exist- ence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Raleigh, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and cor- poration in the city.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 561 to 675. In this section the names of the streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Features of this section are the desig- nation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, beginning opposite page 676 and separately paged from 1 to 40, on goldenrod paper, con- tains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Raleigh. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Raleigh, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
11
INTRODUCTION
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 717 to 802, on white paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alpha- betical order under appropriate headings. This feature con- stitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numer- ous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this informa- tion, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Raleigh.
The Raleigh Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Raleigh City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
GENERAL VIEW
Raleigh is conveniently located on the main highways between the North and South, in the east-central portion of the state, in rolling country, on the fringe of that section of the Carolinas often referred to as the Piedmont.
Raleigh offers many attractions to the person interested in sports. There are four golf courses, a country club, swim- ming pools, riding trails. The streams and ponds surrounding Raleigh offer a variety of fishing material. The city is con- veniently located to the famous fishing and hunting centers of the coastal section.
Raleigh has thirteen hotels serving upwards of 50,000 guests yearly. The rates are reasonable.
Whether one is looking for a central point for distribu- tion, for headquarters or branch-office location, or for some quiet and peaceful place to spend his declining years, Raleigh will have something about it that will please. The town is one of the beauty spots of the state. In Raleigh's business section one will find Colonial architecture surrounded by modern office buildings. Throughout the city are quaint remnants of the old South, interspersed with the modern design of the new South. The people are friendly, courteous and hospitable. Regardless of what one expects of a home town, he will find that everything in Raleigh will fascinate him.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE CAPITOL
HISTORIC RALEIGH
Raleigh abounds in historic eminence and noteworthy tradition. The first English settlement in America was made at Roanoke Island on the coast of North Carolina by Sir Walter Raleigh. The capital city of the state was named in his honor and in memory of this achievement.
The land upon which Raleigh had its beginning was pur- chased in 1792 as a location for the establishment of the state
16
INTRODUCTION
capital. The first capitol building was completed in 1794 and destroyed by fire in 1831. The present building, over 100 years old, is a recognized example of Doric architecture with few equals. It is noted for its beauty and design.
The 17th President of the U. S., Andrew Johnson, was born here. This famous old home now stands as a shrine in Pullen Park.
The State Hall of History here, with its collection of North Carolina historical records and important archives, attracts much interest.
Wakefield, the home of Joel Lane, erected in 1760, is owned and preserved by the Carolina Dames. This colonial home was erected in the old town of Bloomsbury, which was the county seat of Wake County, in 1771.
The oldest bank building in North Carolina still stands on the property of Christ Church. It is the present rectory. It was built in 1795 as the State Bank.
Many visitors in Raleigh are likewise interested in monuments and memorials of famous North Carolinians on Capitol Square and in State department buildings.
Three points of special beauty in Raleigh are Dix Hill, Country Club, and the Federal Cemetery.
A CENTER OF EDUCATION
Raleigh, with six colleges and an excellent public school system, has long been recognized as an outstanding center of education.
The North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering was established by legislative enactment in 1889. It is one of the leading agricultural and mechanical colleges in the South. There are 30 major buildings in the plant. It had an enrollment-constantly growing-of 2,500 in 1939. It embraces four schools-Agriculture and Forestry, Engi- neering, Science and Business and Textile.
Meredith College, a Baptist college for women, was opened in 1897. For many years it was located near the Capitol and now occupies a modern plant completed in 1925, two miles from the city on the Hillsboro Road. Courses are offered in arts, sciences and music. The enrollment in 1937 was 544.
St. Mary's School and Junior College, operated by the Episcopal Church of the Carolinas, was founded in 1842. The highest standards are maintained, with all academic courses fully accredited by the Southern Association. The annual ses- sions offer the students 35 weeks of classroom work. An average of twenty states are represented in annual enrollment, which, in 1939, was 282.
Peace, a junior college for women, owned by the Pres- byterians of North Carolina, was opened in 1872. It offers standard and general junior college courses, college prepara- tory courses, and special courses in art, music, home economics and commercial subjects. A number of modern buildings have been added recently, and the enrollment has grown rapidly. In 1937 it was 288.
