INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1941 edition of the Raleigh City Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Raleigh's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Raleigh to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Raleigh Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 25 to 583, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Raleigh, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and cor- poration in the city.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, preceding the Classified and separately paged from 1 to 48, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Raleigh. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Raleigh, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 633 to 718, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in al- phabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
11
INTRODUCTION
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 721 to 850. In this section the names of the streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their re- spective crossing points on each street. Features of this sec- tion are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having tele- phones.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what is has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Raleigh.
The Raleigh Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Raleigh City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in. the offices of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, for free refer- ence by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North Ameri- can Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the sys- tem is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE CAPITOL
GENERAL VIEW
Raleigh is conveniently located on the main highways between the North and South, in the east-central portion of the state, in rolling country, on the fringe of that section of the Carolinas often referred to as the Piedmont.
Raleigh offers many attractions to the person interested in sports. There are four golf courses, a country club, swim- ming pools, riding trails. The streams and ponds surround- ing Raleigh offer a variety of fishing material. The city is conveniently located to the famous fishing and hunting centers of the coastal section.
Raleigh has twelve hotels serving upwards of 50,000 guests yearly. The rates are reasonable.
Whether one is looking for a central point for distribu- tion, for headquarters or branch-office location, or for some quiet and peaceful place to spend his declining years, Raleigh will have something about it that will please. The town is one of the beauty spots of the state. In Raleigh's business section one will find Colonial architecture surrounded by

INTRODUCTION
modern office buildings. Throughout the city are quaint remnants of the old South, interspersed with the modern design of the new South. The people are friendly, courteous and hospitable. Regardless of what one expects of a home town, he will find that everything in Raleigh will fascinate him.
HISTORIC RALEIGH
Raleigh abounds in historic eminence and noteworthy tradition. The first English settlement in America was made at Roanoke Island on the coast of North Carolina by Sir Walter Raleigh. The capital city of the state was named in his honor and in memory of this achievement.
The land upon which Raleigh had its beginning was purchased in 1792 as a location for the establishment of the state capital. The first capitol building was completed in 1794 and destroyed by fire in 1831. The present building, over 100 years old, is a recognized example of Doric architec- ture with few equals. It is noted for its beauty and design.
The 17th President of the U. S., Andrew Johnson, was born here. This famous old home now stands as a shrine in Pullen Park.
The State Hall of History here, with its collection of North Carolina historical records and important archives, attracts much interest.
Wakefield, the home of Joel Lane, erected in 1760, is owned and preserved by the Carolina Dames. This colonial home was erected in the old town of Bloomsbury, which was the county seat of Wake County, in 1771.
The oldest bank building in North Carolina still stands on the property of Christ Church. It is the present rectory. It was built in 1795 as the State Bank.
Many visitors in Raleigh are likewise interested in monuments and memorials of famous North Carolinians on Capitol Square and in State department buildings.
Three points of special beauty in Raleigh are Dix Hill, Country Club, and the Federal Cemetery.
A CENTER OF EDUCATION
Raleigh, with six colleges and an excellent public school system, has long been recognized as an outstanding center of education.
The North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering was established by legislative enactment in 1889. It is one of the leading agricultural and mechanical colleges in the South. There are 30 major buildings in the plant. It had an enrollment-constantly growing-of 2,500 in 1939. It embraces four schools-Agriculture and Forestry, Engi- neering, Science and Business and Textile.
Meredith College, a Baptist college for women, was opened in 1897. For many years it was located near the Capitol and now occupies a modern plant completed in 1925, two miles from the city on the Hillsboro Road. Courses are offered in arts, sciences and music. The enrollment in 1937 was 544.
St. Mary's School and Junior College, operated by the Episcopal Church of the Carolinas, was founded in 1842. The highest standards are maintained, with all academic courses fully accredited by the Southern Association. The

annual sessions offer the students 35 weeks of classroom work. An average of twenty states are represented in an- nual enrollment, which, in 1940, was 282.

It offers standard and general junior college courses, college prepara- tory course, and special courses in art, music, home econom- ics and commercial subjects. A number of modern build- ings have been added recently, and the enrollment has grown rapidly. In 1940 it was 288.
The North Carolina School for the White Blind was established by legislative enactment in 1845. The present plant was completed in 1923 at a cost of $1,300,000. It is a standard high school and the only one of its type in the U. S. with this rating. It specializes in vocational training.
