INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the Reidsville Directory since 1959). present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Reidsville City Directory which also includes Rural Route Residents.
Confidence in the growth of Reidsville's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Reids- ville to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organiza- tion, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the ap- proval of every user, and that the Reidsville Directory will ful- fill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order: -
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional con- cerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and busi- ness cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference ad- vertising at its best, and merit the attenion of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Reidsville, the necessity of hav- ing this kind of information up-to-date and always immediate- ly available, is obvious. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, eccupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Reidsville and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this seetion the num- bered streets are arranged in numerieal order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the number of the resi- denees and business eoneerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and eoneerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the interseeting streets appear at their respee- tive crossing points on each street. Speeial features of this see- tion are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory refleets the achievements and ambitions of the community, depieting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residenee, as a business loeation, as a man- ufaeturing site, and as an educational eenter. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free publie referenee, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Reidsville and vieinity.
The Reidsville Out-Of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Reidsville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offiees of the Reidsville Chamber of Commerce for free refer- enee by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Diree- tory Libraries, installed in the chief eities of the U. S. and Can- ada through the courtesy of members of North Ameriean Di- reetory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively aeknowledge the reeogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their eonfidenee in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

The terrain of this area is gently rolling, and because of the Blue Ridge Mountain barrier ridges and peaks, northwest- erly winds seldom bring heavy or prolonged winter rain or snow. Seasonal snowfall has a wide range, but the average winter brings two snows of an inch or more. Snow seldom stays on the ground more than a few days. Summer precipita- tion is largely from thundershowers, mostly local in char- acter. Summer temperatures vary to some extent with the cloudiness and shower activity, but average mild compared with most of Piedmont North Carolina. Less than a third of the summer days reach an afternoon high of 90 degrees, and 100 degree temperatures occur less than once a year on the average. The average date of last killing frost in spring is April 7, of the first killing frost in autumn is October 31. History
Reidsville was conceived and planned by a sturdy group of ambitious and determined people. The City grew out of a settlement begun in 1815 when Reuben Reid settled on the farm which later became the site of the village of Reidsville. The town, incorporated in 1873, was named in honor of Reu- ben Reid's son, David, Governor of North Carolina in 1851. Reidsville is located in Rockingham County. Rockingham County has the distinction of being the only county in the state that has furnished six governors: Alexander Martin served in 1783, 1784 and 1790; John Motley Morehead served in 1842; David Settle Reid served 1850-52; and Alfred M Scales served 1886. Robert Broadnax Glenn served in 1904 and Luther Hodges, serving from 1953-1960.
