INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Reidsville Directory since 1959), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1963 edition of the Reidsville City Directory, which also in- cludes Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Reidsville's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Reids- ville to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organiza- tion, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the ap- proval of every user, and that the Reidsville Directory will ful- fill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the adver- tisements of leading manufacturing, business and profession- al interests of Reidsville. The advertisements are indexed un- der headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Reidsville, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is ob- vious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the sec- ond major department, printed on canary paper. This depart- ment lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This fea- ture constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commer- cial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major de-

partment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Reidsville, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the house- holders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Reidsville and vicinity.

The Reidsville Out-Of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Reidsville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Reidsville Chamber of Commerce, for free refer- ence by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Di- rectory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Climate

The terrain of this area is gently rolling, and because of the Blue Ridge Mountain barrier ridges and peaks, northwest- erly winds seldom bring heavy or prolonged winter rain or snow. Seasonal snowfall has a wide range, but the average winter brings two snows of an inch or more. Snow seldom stays on the ground more than a few days. Summer precipita- tion is largely from thundershowers, mostly local in charac- ter. Summer temperatures vary to some extent with the cloud- iness and shower activity, but average mild compared with most of Piedmont North Carolina. Less than a third of the summer days reach an afternoon high of 90 degrees, and 100 degree temperatures occur less than once a year on the aver- age. The average date of last killing frost in spring is April 7, of the first killing frost in autumn is October 31. The range of the date of the last killing frost in spring is March 10 to April 22, while the first killing frost in autumn has varied from Oc- tober 8 to November 29.

History

Reidsville was conceived and planned by a sturdy group of ambitious and determined people. The City grew out of a settlement begun in 1815 when Reuben Reid settled on the farm which later became the site of the village of Reidsville. The town, incorporated in 1873, was named in honor of Reu- ben Reid's son, David, Governor of North Carolina in 1851. Reidsville is located in Rockingham County. Rockingham County has the distinction of being the only county in the state that has furnished six governors: Alexander Martin served in 1783, 1784 and 1790; John Motley Morehead served in 1842; David Settle Reid served 1850-52; and Alfred M Scales served 1886. Robert Broadnax Glenn served in 1904 and Luther Hodges, serving from 1953-1960.

Government

Reidsville is governed by a City Manager and a City Council from which a Mayor is appointed.
