INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the Rocky Mount City Directory since 1908), present to sub- scribers and the general public, this, the 1958 edition of the Rocky Mount City Directory, which also includes Englewood.
Confidence in the growth of Rocky Mount's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Rocky Mount to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory serv- ice. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Rocky Mount Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals de- siring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference ad- vertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seek- ing sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Rocky Mount, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to- date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Rocky Mount and Englewood, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, printed on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order fol- lowed by named streets arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the

listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the com- munity, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of resi- dence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educa- tional center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve av perpetual and reliable advertisements of Rocky Mount and vicinity.
The Rocky Mount Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Rocky Mount City Di- rectory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Associat. on o. North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the vears, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to -treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

INTRODUCTION
Rocky Mount's Forward March
Rocky Mount was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1907. Its growth has been phenomenal. In 1890 the town was credited with 816 people. Ten years later, in 1900 the U. S. Census gave it a population of 2,937; in 1910, 8,051; in 1920, 12,742; in 1930, 21,412; 1940, 25,568; and 1950, 27,697. The local estimate at this time is 34,000.
Located at the gateway point of one of the most prosperous sections of the state, and with a network of highways and railway connections to strengthen its geographical assets, it is recognized as eastern North Car- olina's foremost jobbing and distributing center.
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad maintains one of its largest shops here. Situated in the heart of a rich agricultural district, the city is logical- ly a marketing center for farm products. In the season of 1957 there were sold on the Rocky Mount tobacco market, 51, 411, 196 pounds of bright-leaf tobacco. Rocky Mount is also a large market for cotton. Rocky Mount also is proud of its curb market. Rocky Mount is the second largest livestock market in North Carolina.
The industrial development is merged with the distribution of farm products. The City has ten tobacco factories and redrying plants, two fertilizer factories, several woodworking plants, cotton mill, silk mill, plush mill, cashmere processing plant, cordage factories, mattress fac- tory, steel tank fabricating plants, two bakeries, meat processing plants, diary processing plants, venetian blind manufacturers, plywood manufac- turers, and feed mills. In addition to these, the Atlantic Coast Line main- tains its Emerson Shops here. There are at present 8,500 industrial work- ers employed in the city with a payroll of more than $15,250,000 per year. The total wage earners in the city number approximately 13,500 and re- ceive yearly earnings of approximately $25,000,000.
One of the Largest Bright-Leaf Tobacco Markets in the World
Rocky Mount is situated 120 miles south of Richmond, Va., 120 miles southwest of Norfolk, Va., and 120 miles northwest of Wilmington, N. C. It is on U. S. Highway No. 301, running north and south, and on U. S. High- way No. 64 running east and west. U. S. Highway No. 301 is an important link in the route from Maine to Florida and carries more coastal traffic
