INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., INC., publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Rocky Mount City Directory since 1908), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Rocky Mount City Directory, which also includes Englewood and Meadowbrook Park.
Confidence in the growth of Rocky Mount's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directoryare consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Rocky Mount to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Rocky Mount Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic informa- tion pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order: -
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc - tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings -- a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the cata - log itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Rocky Mount, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directoryis the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Rocky Mount, Englewood and Meadowbrook Park, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDINGSTREET AND AVE - NUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this sec- tion the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order followed by named streets arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Di- rectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Rocky Mount and vicinity.
The Rocky Mount Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Rocky Mount City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directoryas an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Rocky Mount was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1907. Its growth has been phenomena1. In 1890 the town was credited with 816 people. Ten years later, in 1900 the U. S. Census gave it a population of 2,937; in 1910, 8,051; in 1920, 12,742; in 1930, 21,412; 1940, 25,568; 1950, 27,697 and 1960, 32,- 147.
Located at the gateway point of one of the most prosperous sections of the state, and with a network of highways and railway connections to strengthen its geographical assets, it is recognized as eastern North Carolina's foremost jobbing and distributing center.
Situated in the heart of a rich agricultural district, the city is logically a marketing center for farm products. In the season of 1960 there were sold on the Rocky Mount tobacco market, 66,936,298 pounds of bright-leaf tobacco. Rocky Mount is also a large market for cotton. Rocky Mount also is proud of its curb market. Rocky Mount is the largest livestock market in Eastern North Carolina.
Tobacco Warehouse District
XI
INTRODUCTION
One of the Largest Bright-Leaf Tobacco Markets in the World
The industrial development is merged with the distribution of farm products. The city has ten tobacco factories and redrying plants, two fertilizer factories, several woodworking plants, cotton mill, silk mill, plush mill, women and chil- dren undergarments, cordage factories, mattress factory, steel tank fabricating plants, two bakeries, meat processing plants, dairy processing plants, venetian blind manufacturers, plywood manufacturers and feed mills. There are at present 7,220 manufacturing workers employed in the city with a payroll of more than $23,000,000 per year. The total wage earners in the city number approximately 16,475 and receive yearly earnings of approximately $52,000,000.
Rocky Mount is situated 123 miles south of Richmond, Va., 117 miles south- west of Norfolk, Va., and 132 miles northwest of Wilmington, N. C. It is on U. S. Highway No. 301, running north and south, and on U. S. Highway No. 64 running east and west. U. S.
