INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Scotland Neck City Directo- ry since 1960), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Scotland Neck City Directory which also includes the Rural Route Residents ..

Confidence in the growth of Scotland Neck's industry, pop- ulation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and so- cial activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Scotland Neck to the world.

The enviable position occupied by Hill's Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the busi- ness and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the Scotland Neck Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the adver- tisements of leading manufacturing, business and profession- al interests of Scotland Neck. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Scotland Neck, the necessi- ty of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the sec- ond major department, printed on canary paper. This depart- ment lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commer- cial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sell- ers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major de-

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

partment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Scotland Neck, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the number- ed streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical or- der under the name of each street, and the names of the house- holders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to of- fer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Scotland Neck and vicinity. There are more than 1,000 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico through the courtesy of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervi- sion the system is operated and of which Hill Directory Com- pany, is a member.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a com- mensurate return.

The Town of Scotland Neck is located in the rich Coastal Plain area of North Carolina not far from the banks of the Roanoke River. It was settled in 1717 by Scotch-Irish settlers whose descendants still constitute a very large percent of the present population of approximately 9,000. At first they settled along the banks of the Roanoke River but successive floods of the river, which at that time had a very wide basin caused them to move back to the "piney woods" as they were called then. Later slave labor built retaining dikes to control the river. The town is now about four and a half miles from the river banks but still in the Roanoke Valley.

xiii

INTRODUCTION

The chief activity is farming and the chief source of in- come is agriculture. Many of the farms are very large, almost plantations, and in many cases they are held by direct descen- dants of the original settlers. The chief crops produced in the area are cotton, tobacco, peanuts, corn and soybeans. Live- stock production is increasing. The town has an organization known as The Scotland Neck Development Corporation which has been formed by citizens for the purpose of encouraging in- dustry to settle in the area and to provide assistance in fi- nancing. At present the chief industries are one large textile mill which manufactures hosiery, one small mill manufactur- ing ladies and girls pajamas, two cotton warehouses, two cot- ton gins, two peanut processing plants, a hog market, several sawmills and two producers of high grade lumber. The town owns its own water system and electric system and has an ample supply of power furnished by the Virginia Electric and Power Company. The terrain for several miles around the community is flat and well drained, the soil is of the loose loam variety and the average temperatures throughout the year are considered mild.

A STATEMENT OF ADVERTISING PRINCIPLES

1. Good Advertising - aims to inform the consumer and help him to buy more intelligently.

2. Good Advertising - tells the truth, avoiding mis- statement of facts as well as possible deception through implication or omission. It makes no claims which can not be met in full and without further qualification. It uses only testimonials of competent witnesses.

3. Good Advertising - conforms to the generally ac- cepted standards of good taste. It seeks public accept- ance on the basis of the merits of the product or serv- ice advertised rather than by the disparagement of competing goods. It tries to avoid practices that are offensive or annoying.

4. Good Advertising - recognizes both its economic responsibility to help reduce distribution costs and its social responsibility in serving the public interest.
