TN ADDITION to names and addresses, your City Direc- tory contains much detailed information concerning the people of your community. In order to list this information certain symbols and designations have been developed which enable important statistics to be compressed into the smallest possible space. You will receive far greater benefits from your City Directory if you familiarize yourself with the symbols and what they stand for.

In checking credit applications, in conducting direct mail advertising programs, in planning sales campaigns, in build- ing prospect lines, and in scores of other ways your City Directory will prove of invaluable assistance.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, (Publishers of the Southern Pines-Aberdeen Di- rectory since 1958), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1960 edition of the Southern Pines-Aberdeen City Directory, which also includes Berkley, Knollwood, Man- ley and Pinebluff and the Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Southern Pines-Aberdeen's in- dustry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Southern Pines-Aberdeen to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organiza- tion, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the Publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the ap- proval of every user, and that the Southern Pines-Aberdeen Dirctory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic in- formation pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional con- cerns of Southern Pines-Aberdeen, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activi- ties of Southern Pines-Aberdeen. Preceding this catalog, like- wise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertise- ments and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. Te Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Southern Pines-Aber- deen, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to- date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Direc- tory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the com- mercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occu- pation and address of each adult resident of Southern Pines-

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

Aberdeen, Berkley, Knollwood, Manley and Pinebluff, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment printed on green paper. In this section the named streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numeri- cal order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this sec- tion are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the Publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free reference, and serve as perpetual and re- liable advertisements of Southern Pines-Aberdeen and vicini- ty.

The Southern Pines-Aberdeen Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the Publishers of the Southern- Pines-Aberdeen City Directory, a Directory Library is main- tained in the offices of the Southern Pines Chamber of Com- merce, Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History Of Southern Pines

Founded in 1880 by John T. Patrick, who as immigration agent for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad had the job of at- tracting northern settlers and industries to the South. On dis- covering the Sandhill section, with its mild climate and dry pine-scented air, Patrick envisioned such opportunity that he himself purchased the large tract then known as Shaw's Ridge, laid out a town of wide streets and neat squares which persist today, gave the streets the names of New England and other northern states. The town was incorporated in 1886.

The first arrivals found Patrick's tales of haven in the South, just overnight by rail from New York City, to be well founded. They helped spread its fame among those who, for health or other reasons, sought a beneficient climate. Many early settlers, near the last stages of illness on their arrival, regained their health and lived to a ripe old age, founding businesses and contributing much to the development of the town.

By the turn of the century, peach and grape growing had begun to flourish, as they were to do well into the 20th century. A canning factory and the crate manufacturing business of Mr. I. F. Chandler had been established as off-shoots.

By 1905, the telephone company has some 75 subscribers. The school had 88 pupils. Among prominent businesses were Hayes News Depot and Patch & Tarbell, both of which survive today as Hayes Book Store and Patch's Department Store.

Winter visitors tripled the population during half the year, and most of the businesses existed to serve them. Hotels in- cluded the Jefferson Inn, still in existence: The Ozone, now the Southland; the Southern Pines Hotel, Prospect House and the large Piney Woods Hotel, with its lake and forested grounds.

Without ever assuming "boom" proportions except per- haps in the late twenties, Southern Pines, has continued to grow. In 1910 the permanent population was 500; 1920, 743; 1930, 2,524; 1940, 3,225; 1950 (the latest census), 4,272. Since the annexation of the Knollwood area in 1954 the corporate limits cover approximately four and a half square miles, with an estimated population of 5,500.

Various factors have contributed to the development of the community. One is Southern Pines' continued importance as a winter resort, with emphasis shifting through the year from health improvement to active sports or just pleasant liv- ing.

xiii

INTRODUCTION

Climatic conditions permit outdoor enjoyment practically every day in the year. In 1906 the first country club was or- ganized, by 1907 its golf course had been built. as civic leaders emulated the pattern set by the young but thriving resort of Pinehurst, six miles away; today there are three clubs, with four golf courses here, and Southern Pines shares with Pine- hurst the honor of being the nation's winter capital of golf.

In 1915 the Moore County Hounds was organized, and for- ty years later this community is famed as the home of the finest winter fox hunt in the land. Owners of show horses and jumpers have also found it the ideal winter sport, and steeple- chasing has recently had its renaissance at the Stoneybrook track.

The beauty of the town has been a main concern of its res- idents from the beginning, when early settlers formed the Vil- lage Improvement Society, planting many fine trees and shrubs which still grace its streets. The longleaf pine natural to this area forms a stately background, with azaleas and dog- wood adding springtime glory.

The growing charm of Southern Pines through the years has been enhanced by the building of fine winter homes by persons of means, appreciative of beautiful surroundings and the facilities for gracious living they have found here.

The Hollywood Hotel and Highland Pines Inn, large and lovely winter hotels, were both constructed in 1912. The pros- perity of the twenties, bringing a spurt in population, added the elegant Mid Pines Club and Pine Needles Inn, in the Knoll- wood residential section.

In 1925, a new era of progress was inaugurated with a large bond issue, which enabled the town to build its modern water plant on the Carthage road, greatly extended its water and sewer lines and hardsurface many streets.

Depression days showed Southern Pines the vulnerability of a resort operation. Visitors dwindled to a trickle, hotels had a hard time making a go of it and all businesses relying on the seasonal trade suffered. While the town worked it out some- how-even showing a small population gain for the decade, civic leaders started plans to get the economy on a sounder footing.

Unexpected aid came, from a source they would not have chosen-World War II. The rapid burgeoning of nearby Fort Bragg, the opening up of vast Camp Mackall, gave the resort town an unparalleled opportunity to serve. Besides plunging into war work, it provided homes for a flood tide of military families.

When the war ended and population shifts leveled out, it was found that many of the officers and men had liked what they saw here, and wished to stay. Some returned from over- seas to buy homes and enter the business life. Through the en- suing years, the military-both retired and still in uniform have become a fine and stable element of the community life.

The resort factor is still vital, and indeed more flourishing than ever. Despite the conversion of the Pine Needles to a hos- pital, St. Joseph of the Pines, in 1948, and the leasing of the

INTRODUCTION

Highland Pines Inn to the Air Force in 1951, the list of hotels remains large; the Mid Pines and Hollywood, open from Oc- tober till May; the Jefferson Inn, Southland, Parkview, and Belvedere, open all year; numerous guest houses and outside the town, a growing number of modern motels. The golf course of the Mid Pines, Pine Needles Club and Southern Pines Country Club are now open all year.

However, as a "home town" Southern Pines makes its ap- peal not only to the Army and Air Force families, but to an increasing number of retired persons from all walks of life, some of them former leaders of business and industry from the nation's metropolitan centers, others who find that on very modest incomes they can live pleasantly here. Many salesmen and others, whose business interests permit them to choose their headquarters town, are drawn to Southern Pines by its excellent schools. Executives of industry in the area enjoy their home and social life here while commuting daily to nearby towns.

These have given Southern Pines a cosmopolitan citizen. ry, interested in the finer things of life, who have not only ap- preciated what they found here but have joined in community efforts to provide more. The town has a winter concert series worthy of many much larger communities, its library supplies the needs of readers of discrimination, its art exhibits, held seasonally for years, now continue all year round.

There are vigorous churches of several denominations in the community, and some 250 businesses of wide variety.
