INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of South- eastern Directories, (Publishers of the Southern Pines- Aberdeen Directory since 1958), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Southern Pines-Aberdeen City Directory, which also includes Berkley, Knollwood, Manley and Pinebluff and the Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Southern Pines-Aberdeen's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of their civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Southern Pines-Aberdeen to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled or- ganization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the Publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Southern Pines-Aberdeen Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Southern Pines-Aberdeen. The ad- vertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In progressive commun- ities like Southern Pines-Aberdeen, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major department, printed on canary paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate heading. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the communities. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily ac- tivities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Busi- ness Directory than through any other medium.

III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record

799368

INTRODUCTION

in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Southern Pines-Aberdeen, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the commun- ities.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the nam- ed streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed oppo- site the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of ten- ant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the Publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Southern Pines- Aberdeen and vicinity.

The Southern Pines-Aberdeen Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the Publishers of the Southern Pines-Aberdeen City Directory, a Directory Library is main- tained in the offices of the Southern Pines Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of. North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History of Southern Pines

Founded in 1880 by John T. Patrick, who as immigration agent for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad had the job of at- tracting northern settlers and industries to the South. On discovering the Sandhill section, with its mild climate and dry pine-scented air, Patrick envisioned such opportunity that he, himself purchased the large tract then known as Shaw's Ridge, laid out a town of wide streets and neat squares which persist today, gave the streets the names of New England and other northern states. The town was in- corporated in 1886.

The first arrivals found Patrick's tales of haven in the South, just overnight by rail from New York City, to be well founded. They helped spread its fame among those who, for health or other reasons, sought a beneficient climate. Many early settlers, near the last stages of illness on their arrival, regained their health and lived to a ripe old age, founding businesses and contributing much to the development of the town.

By the turn of the century, peach and grape growing had begun to flourish, as they were to do well into the 20th century. A canning factory and the crate manufacturing business of Mr. I. F. Chandler had beenn established as off- shoots.

By 1905, the telephone company had some 75 subscrib- ers. The school had 88 pupils.

Winter visitors tripled the population during half the year, and most of the businesses existed to serve them. Ho- tels included the Jefferson Inn, still in existence; The Ozone, now the Southland; the Southern Pines Hotel, Prospect House and the large Piney Woods Hotel, with its lake and forested grounds.

Without ever assuming "boom" proportions except per- haps in the late twenties, Southern Pines has continued to grow. In 1910 the permanent population was 500; 1920, 743; 1930, 2,524; 1940, 3,225; 1950 (the latest census), 4,272. Since the annexation of the Knollwood area in 1954 the corporate limits cover approximately four and a half square miles, with an estimated population of 5,500.

13

INTRODUCTION

Various factors have contributed to the development of the community. One is Southern Pines' continued impor- tance as a winter resort, with emphasis shifting through the year from health improvement to active sports or just pleas- ant living.

Climatic conditions permit outdoor enjoyment practical- ly every day in the year. In 1906 the first country club was organized, by 1907 its golf course had been built, as civic leaders emulated the pattern set by the young but thriving resort of Pinehurst, six miles away; today there are three clubs, with eight golf courses here, and Southern Pines shares with Pinehurst the honor of being the nation's winter capital of golf.

In 1915 the Moore County Hounds was organized, and forty years later this community is famed as the home of the finest winter fox hunt in the land. Owners of show horses and jumpers have also found it the ideal winter sport, and steeple-chasing has recetnly had it renaissance at the Stoneybrook track.

The beauty of the town has been a main concern of its residents from the beginning, when early settlers formed the Village Improvement Society, planting many fine trees and shrubs which still grace its streets. The longleaf pine natural to this area forms a stately background, with aza- leas and dogwood adding springtime glory.

The growing charm of Southern Pines through the years has been enhanced by the building of fine winter homes by persons of means, appreciative of beautiful surroundings and the facilities for gracious living they have found here.

The Hollywood Hotel and Highland Pines Inn, large and lovely winter hotels, were both constructed in 1912. The prosperity of the twenties, bringing a spurt in population, added the elegant Mid Pines Club and Pine Needles Inn, in the Knollwood residential section.

In 1925, a new era of progress was inaugurated with a large bond issue, which enabled the town to build its modern water plant on the Carthage road, greatly extended its water and sewer lines and hardsurfaced many streets.

Depression days showed Southern Pines the vulnerabil- ity of a resort operation. Visitors dwindled to a trickle, hotels had a hard time making a go of it and all businesses relying on the seasonal trade suffered. While the town worked it out somehow-even showing a small population gain for the decade, civic leaders started plans to get the economy on a sounder footing.

Unexpected aid came, from a source they would not have chosen-World War II. The rapid burgeoning of near- by Fort Bragg, the opening up of vast Camp Mackall, gave the resort town an unparalleled opportunity to serve. Be- sides plunging into war work, it provided homes for a flood tide of military families.

When the war ended and population shifts leveled out, it was found that many of the officers and men had liked what they saw here, and wished to stay. Some returned from overseas to buy homes and enter the business life. Through the ensuing years, the military-both retired and still in uniform have become a fine and stable element of the community life.

The resort factor is still vital, and indeed more flourish- ing than ever. Despite the conversion of the Pine Needles to a hospital, St. Joseph of the Pines, in 1948, and the leas-

14

INTRODUCTION

ing of the Highland Pines Inn to the Air Force in 1951, the list of hotels remains large; the Mid Pines, open from Oc- tober till May; the Jefferson Inn, Southland, Parkview, Belvedere and Hollywood (retirement hotel), open all year; numerous guest houses and outside the town, a growing number of modern motels. The golf courses of the Mid Pines, Pine Needles Club and Southern Pines Country Club are now open all year.

However, as a "home town" Southern Pines makes its appeal not only to the Army and Air Force families, but to an increasing number of retired persons from all walks of life, some of them former leaders of business and industry from the nation's metropolitan centers, others who find that on very modest incomes they can live pleasantly here. Many salesmen and others, whose business interests permit them to choose their headquarters town, are drawn to Southern Pines by its excellent schools. Executives of industry in the area enjoy their home and social life here while commuting daily to nearby towns.

These have given Southern Pines a cosmopolitan citi- zenry, interested in the finer things of life, who have not only appreciated what they found here but have joined in community efforts to provide more. The town has a winter concert series worthy of many much larger communities, its library supplies the needs of readers of discrimination, its art exhibits, held seasonally for years, now continue all year round.

There are vigorous churches of several denominations in the community, and some 250 businesses of wide variety.
