INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of South- eastern Directories, present to subscribers and the gen- eral public, this, the 1959 edition of the Williamston City Directory, which also includes the rural routes emanating from the Williamston Post Office.

This is the first Hill Directory of Williamston and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Direc- tory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Williamston industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Williamston to the world.

The enviable position occupied by Hill's Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an un- rivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers fell that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Williamston Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first ma- jor department of the Directory. This embraces a com- plete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity ar- ranged in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings-a catalog of all the activities of the City and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and busi- ness cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages rep- resent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive com- munity like Williamston, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available is obvious. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller, and plays an import- ant role in the daily activities of the commercial, indus- trial and professional world.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of resi- dents and business and professional concerns is the sec- ond major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Williamston, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corpora- tion in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, IN- CLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this sec- tion the numbered streets are arranged in numerical ordr, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

V. THE WILLIAMSTON RURAL ROUTES DIREC- TORY is the fifth major department, printed on white paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and am- bitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a busi- ness location, as a manufacturing site and as an educa- tional center. To broadcast this information, the pub- lishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Williamston and vicinity. There are more than 700 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which Hill Directory Co., Inc., is a member.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and profes- sional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with as- surance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Williamston, with an estimated 1959 population of more than 7,000, is the county seat and Martin County's largest urban community. First called Skewarky, the town was later renamed Williamston in honor of Colonel William Williams of the Martin County Militia. Char- tered in 1779, the first mentioned date of its location in recorded history is 1587 when white colonists are said to have reached this far in exploring the Roanoke River. The explorers landed on the river bank for an overnight stay, but were driven back to their boats by the Tuscarora Indians in what may have been the first battle in history between the American Red man and English speaking whites.

Located near the center of the county on the south bank of the Roanoke, Williamston is in the center of a geographic circle, which, at a distance of approximately 100 miles, encompasses the state capital at Raleigh, the busy seaport of Norfolk, historic Roanoke Island and the beaches of Dare County and the U. S. Marine Base at Camp Lejeune. It is easily accessible by land trans- portation of all kinds, has a navigable waterway, and is only 50 to 65 miles from commercial airports at Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City, and New Bern.

Since 1930, Williamston has experienced a record growth unlike that of any comparable period in its his- tory as its population swelled from 2,731 to the more than 7,000 of today. In the growth, its position as a hub of transportation in eastern North Carolina has been vital.

A port of entry before the Revolutionary War, Wil- liamston is still an important terminal point of water freight cargos. Principal among commodities handled by river freight are raw and finished fertilizer products, timber, and oil refinery products brought in by tankers from Norfolk. One oil terminal, operated by the Texas Company, has a storage capacity of more than two mil- lion gallons and services an area extending as far as 75-miles away from Williamston.

xiii

INTRODUCTION

Williamston also has freight and express services over the facilities of the Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company, and it is located only 20-miles from the main line of the Norfolk and Southern Railway Company at the ACL terminus at Plymouth. Several truck lines serve Williamston, one of which, Thurston Motor Lines, has a modern terminal here.

It has been the state and federal highways con- structed during the period, however, that have served most to stimulate Williamston's emergence as a hub. These highways, U. S. 13, 17 and 64 and N. C. 125, con- nect Williamston directly with Norfolk, Elizabeth City and Portsmouth to the north, with Wilmington and Charleston to the south, with Manteo to the east, with Raleigh and Memphis to the west, with U. S. Highway 301 to the northwest, and with Goldsboro to the south- west. These roads channel into and out of Williams- ton all kinds of commerce associated with eastern North Carolina. They also serve the heavy tourist and local passenger traffic, and the passenger buses of Carolina Trailways.

The result is that Williamston today is a community of widely diversified interests; of agricultural market- ing and processing facilities, of commercial enterprises and of utility operations.

It is, for example, the Southern Division and 14- county Albemarle District headquarters of the Virginia Electric and Power Company. It is also an important operations center for the Carolina Telephone and Tele- graph Company. Both utilities have the most modern of plant equipment and have capacities for almost un- limited load growth. The power company moved into a new quarter-million dollar headquarters building in Dec- ember 1958, and this building and its grounds are con- sidered to be one of the section's most attractive commer- cial establishments.

For many years, the population of Williamston was almost entirely static. Today, because of this influx of regional operations, a sizeable segment is transient with increasing percentages establishing permenent residen- ces here. The direct result of this has been a home build- ing program that, within a few years, has completely altered the face of the community. It is conservatively estimated that at least 25 percent of the housing until within the town are less than 15 years old.

To finance its growth, Williamston is served by two banks, units of the Branch Banking & Trust Company and of the Guaranty Bank & Trust Company, and by the Martin County Savings and Loan Association. In addi- tion to these institutions, a number of insurance compan- ies and other financing agencies find the Williamston area attractive for investment.

Williamston, governed by a Mayor and five Com- missioners, elected as a group every odd calendar year,

had an assessed property valuation, based at 25% of ac- tual, of $6,709,058 in 1958 with a$2.00 per $100 tax rate. The bonded indebtedness at the time was $366,500.

Nine uniformed officers staff the town's police de- partment, which is provided with two radio-equipped patrol cars. One full time and one part time fireman are on the fire department payroll, and these two men are assisted by an excellent volunteer group. Three modern and well-equipped trucks make up the automotive fleet of the department.

Water for Williamston's needs is supplied from several deep wells which have a maximum capacity of about 1,750,000 gallons per day. The storage capacity totals 625,000 gallons, and the present average use per day is approximately 500,000 gallons. The quality of the water from these wells is very good, with an average hardness content of as little as six parts per million. In addition to the well supply, water from the Roanoke River, which has a minimum flow of 538,800 gallons per minute, is satisfactory for industrial and domestic use after filtration.

Of some 25 miles of streets within Williamston, approximately 40% are surfaced, three more miles are graveled, and approximately 50% of the total are curbed and guttered. Refuse disposal is made on a state ap- proved land fill located one mile east of town, and col- lections of refuse are made daily in the business districts and three times weekly in the residential areas.

Two high and two grade schools with combined en- rollments of nearly 4,000 are the basic educational facili- ties for the children of Williamston and the surrounding rural areas. Augmenting these are two public libraries, one of which is scheduled to move before long into new quarters financed by public subscription. Nearby colleges include East Carolina, 30 miles away at Greenville, At- lantic Christian, 55 miles away at Wilson, Chowan, 56 miles away at Murfreesboro, and State Teachers, 65 miles away at Elizabeth City.

Six physicians, two dentists, and two optometrists, serve the town. Two hospitals, Martin General and Brown's Community, have a total of 80 beds, and the Martin County Health Center provides public health serv- ices to the community.

Located within a rich agricultural section, William- ston has a diversified industrial activity which keeps the trade economy balance. Evidence of that lies in recent year locations here of chain retail outlets that share the market with independent operators.

The industries are varied, ranging from fertilizer, insecticides, and irrigation products plants of the Olin- Mathieson Chemical Corporation to several large saw- mills, four tobacco marketing warehouses, the William- ston Peanut Company, and the two year-old processing plant of Martindale Foods, Inc. The latter, which was

organized through the effort of the local Chamber of Commerce is recognized by state leaders as one of the most outstading projects to ever be developed by local initiative.

Williamston, a town of friendly people, is a com- munity of 16 churches represeting all major Protestant and Catholic faiths. It is also a town of civic coopera- tion fostered by several civic and fraternal groups.

The community is served by one drive-in and two uptown theatres. And on the south side of the town is located one of the most modern country clubs in eastern North Carolina. Boasting a lavish club house, a nine hole golf course and two tennis courts, the Roanoke Country Club is considered one of the section's show places, and hardly a week passes when it is not the scene of an area or sectional meeting. Williamston also has a swimming pool, operated by private management, and there is an unusually well balanced program of youth activities with- in the town.

For the sportsman, Williamston's position on the map could hardly be more strategic. The Roanoke River, though more widely known in the past for its extensive commercial operations, is now rapidly gaining fame for its vast stock of game fish. Bass, crappie, and perch are increasing in large numbers not only on the river proper but within its tributaries as well.

The lowlands of the river abound in game of all kinds climatically adapted to the section. The range of this game is from squirrel to deer, and the abundance of the latter has attracted governors and U. S. Senators and people of many other prominent positions to the section.

Within easy reach of Williamston, some 70-miles away, is one of the most widely known wild fowl hunting centers in the country. This refuge at Lake Mattamuskeet is the winter home of thousands of Canadian geese which attract hunters from widely spread parts of the country.

Williamston has a 1000 watt commercial radio out- let in WIAM, and a bi-weekly newspaper, The Enterprise, that has a circulation of some 3,745. The town is also within 20 miles of an NBC TV outlet, and it is only 30 miles from a CBS TV station. Both of these stations oper- ate with 100,000 watts of video power.

For its size, Williamston is exceptionally well equip- ped to care for tourists and other transient guests. Its seven motels, all but one of which is less than ten years old, have more than 100 room units most of which are air- conditioned and TV equipped. Four of these motels have dining room facilities and, of these, three have coffee shops; three also have swimming pools.

Williamston, "On The Roanoke" is approximately 72.5 feet above mean sea level and has an average annual precipitation of 49.73 inches which is almost perfect for its agricultural economy. Its average temperatures for

January and July 44.2 and 79.4 degrees Fahrenheit, res- pectively, are also conducive to agriculture and to com- fortable year-round living.

The town, 180 years of age, is young in spirit, and although it looks backward with pride it knows that its future lies not in its history, but is being molded by what is done today. Looking toward an increasingly brighter future, the people of Williamston have geared them- selves to inevitable changes in the face of their town. The Wililamston Chamber of Commerce stands ready at all times to answer inquiries concerning the town. It also stands ready to show visitors the present day Williams- ton and to discuss its potentials with them.
