INTRODUCTION
Hill Directory Company, Inc., presents to its subscribers and to the general public this (1928) edition of the Wilmington (City) Di- rectory.
Confidence in the growth of Wilmington, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are con- sulted, for truly the directory is a mirror reflecting Wilmington to the world.
The enviable place occupied by Hill Directory Company's directories in offices, stores, libraries and homes throughout our country causes the publishers to forecast the belief that the Wilmington directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information of any and every kind pertaining to our city. With an unrivaled organiza- tion having the courteous and hearty co-operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labor will meet with the approval of every resident of the city.
POPULATION
The estimated population of Wilmington is 42,930, based on the number of individual names in the alphabetical section of the Direc- tory, with due allowance for women and children, whose names are not included. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the Directory.
FOUR MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order:
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 17 to 48, printed on tinted paper, con- tains the advertisements of the leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Wilmington. These pages will be found particularly interesting and instructive to the substantial elements of the city. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by de- partments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and as such merits a survey by all buyers keen to prime themselves on sources of supply. The city's activities, in many interesting phases, are in- terestingly pictured to reveal what it has in its show window. In an ambitious and progressive community like Wilmington the need of

INTRODUCTION-Continued
this kind of information readily at hand is very great and frequently pressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal patronage the City Directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms, corporations is included in pages 49 to 536. (A new feature of this section is the inclusion of wives' names in parenthesis following that of the husband.)
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSE- HOLDERS covers pages 537 to 656. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders and business con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 657 to 736. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory Section than through any other medium."
MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site, and as an educational center. To give emphasis to their desire to broadcast this informa- tion over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the larger cities of the country, where they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Wilming- ton, for business men the country over realize that the City Directory represents the community as it really is.
HILL'S DIRECTORY LIBRARY
There are over 400 of these Directory Libraries in the chain. One of them is maintained at the Chamber of Commerce. The publishers invite use of it by the public whenever in the need of information on other cities.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the patronage of those progressive business and professional men who have expressed their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

PREFACE
(Furnished by Chamber of Commerce)
A city strategically situated on the Cape Fear River, blessed by nature with a variety of resources and kept up-to-date by the hand of man. It possesses both trunk line rail and deep water trans- portation, which gives it low freight rates and permits quick freight movements in great volume.
It is both important as a port and as industrial city, while it is the pivotal point for a rich and large agricultural area, and is the trading center for fully 225,000 people, the city being their nearest, as well as largest market.
As a port, it possesses a fresh water harbor 28 miles from the bar. Ice is an unknown quantity in the river, which has a deep water channel, up and down which go big ocean steamers, bound for Europe, Latin America and other foreign shores.
Its exportations and importations are large and ever growing, which mark a successful port. As a cotton port it yearly sends forth approximately two hundred thousand bales per year, and this record is evidently going to be surpassed. Its imports cover a large field in variety and come from practically every quarter of the globe.
Within the past year or two the population of Wilmington has in- creased in a tremendous way, and it is now a city of about 42,000 population, housed in comfortable homes. To accommodate the in- creasing population not only have individuals built homes, but the citizens formed what is known as the Victory Home Company, with an authorized capital of a million dollars and PAID IN OF $250,000.00 to erect houses, which object has been successfully carried out.
Regardless of conditions the year has already witnessed prepara- tions for big building operations. Among recent enterprises located here are several large new fertilizer factories, a large readi-cut house plant of the Aladdin Company, the Atlantic Refining Company, the Galena Signal Oil Company, the American Molasses Company ; Southland Manufacturing Co., Weller Pickle Co., Wilmington Veneer Corp, Dupont Nitrates Co., W. R. Grace & Company, Nehi Bottling Co., Cobett Crate Co., Mavis Crate Co., and others, thus supple- menting the city's already large number of such industries.
The natural gateway of North and South Carolina, intermediate between the whole territory and Richmond.
Wilmington is North Carolina's seaport city, the gateway of her commerce and trade. North Carolina is a vast State in area, larger than New York or Pennsylvania, and almost as large as New Eng- land. Wilmington is the natural distributing point for North Caro- lina and parts of South Carolina and Georgia. Think what it would mean if all of New England had only one such distributing seaport, and it will then be realized why Wilmington must grow and is grow- ing to meet the demands of this vast territory whose bountiful natural resources have hardly been touched.
15
From the Middle West the Panama Canal is in more direct com- munication via Wilmington than by any other South Atlantic sea- port, and cargoes to and from Wilmington will not be subject to the dangers of Cape Hatteras.
Wilmington is the center of the greatest vegetable producing dis- trict in the United States. A few years ago no strawberries were raised except for domestic use; now WILMINGTON IS THE CEN- TER OF LARGEST STRAWBERRY RAISING DISTRICT IN THE WORLD. It is the LARGEST LETTUCE-PRODUCING DISTRICT IN THE WORLD, and next to the largest peanut market.
Wilmington's outlets by rail and water are the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line systems, Wilmington, Brunswick and Southern Railway, the .Clyde Steamship Line to New York, and foreign services.
Wilmington has a wonderful climate; no extreme heat or extreme cold. Average summer temperature, 78 degrees; average winter temperature, 48 degrees. The normal rainfall is 51.05 inches, aver- age annual clear days, 132 (New York, rainfall, 44 inches; clear days, 118; New Orleans, rainfall, 57 inches; clear days, 109). The mild climate and diversified opportunities make this city and section a haven for homeseekers.
I
The Wilmington district is one of the greatest trucking regions in the United States, and the yield for this early crop reaches the sum of nearly eighteen million annually.
Nearest Atlantic port to the Ohio gateways, and nearer Cincin- nati than Charleston by fifteen miles and Savannah by thirty miles.
One of the largest distributing points south of Baltimore for pro- ducts of the Standard Oil Company.
Has immense terminals that can load sixteen ocean-going ships at one time, providing them with over 600,000 square feet of ware- house space.
In the war had two immense shipyards, properties having been converted into industrial and civil uses. Had the honor of possessing the only Government-owned steel shipyard in South, and first Govern- ment-owned concrete yard in country.
The commerce on the Cape Fear River at and below Wilmington last year averaged approximately 1,000,000 tons, with valuation of more than $67,000,000.
South of Hatteras, thus assuring safety to vessels from Latin America and other countries to the south of the United States, and occupies strategic position of advantage to such countries.
River never has ice, which permits year 'round navigation, and cli- mate is never too cold to make work outdoor as hardship or discomfort.
Has many fertilizer factories, petroleum products terminals, lum- ber plants and a number of fish factories, employing thousands of men.
Has handsomest custom house in the South, the cost of which was more than $700,000.
Next terminal of inland waterway canal, this link being from Beaufont to the Cape Fear River. Board of Engineers has recom- mended extension, work on which will start at once.
---
---
16
Wilmington has two immense cotton compresses and a marine railway. The steel shipyard operated during the war by the George A. Fuller Company is being converted into an industrial center. The concrete shipyard property is owned by the city and will be developed into municipal wharves and public terminals and ware- houses. This has been offered the State of North Carolina as a location for State-owned terminals and warehouses.
With both water and rail transportation, thus affording quick hauls and low freight rates, and near the scenes of raw material, Wil- mington is a splendid spot for manufacturing industries. Two big railroad systems-the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line- place the city near the great coal fields and the iron-producing zones.
