JACKSONVILLE CITY DIRECTORY
INTRODUCTION
IN PRESENTING THIS, the 1948 edition of the Jacksonville City Directory, the Carolina Publishing Company, of Wilmington, publishers of City Directories for municipalities in the smaller popu- lation brackets, feel that it presents an accurate picture of Jackson- ville and, by so doing, upholds the city's reputation for sound and pro- gressive development which has characterized it over a period of the past few years.
THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF THIS DIRECTORY, the City of Jacksonville, home city to Camp Lejeune, major United States Marine Corps establishment, can adequately and convincingly present its story to outside interests to its best advantage and inspire its busi- ness and citizenship in the attainment of even greater accomplish- ments in the future. The very fact that Jacksonville can claim a City Directory is no inconsiderable factor in the municipality's favor in its endeavor to attract new residents, new business and new manufacturing interests.
IN COMMON WITH MOST DIRECTORIES in this type, the Jacksonville City Directory is divided into four major parts: An Alphabetical List of Names of residents, business concerns, profes- sional men, organizations, etc .; a section known as a Guide for Buy- ers ; the Classified Business Section ; and the Story of the City.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES shows the names, oc- cupation, race, and place of residence of adult and employed citizens of Jacksonville, and whether home owner or not. Also shown are the names, address and nature of the business concerns, organizations, etc. of Jacksonville.
THE GUIDE FOR BUYERS contains the display advertising of advertisers who have a product or a service to offer to the community. Each advertisement is classified under the nature of the business represented. Purchasers find it easy, when in need of a certain pro- duct or service, to locate it by reference to this section.
IN THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS SECTION are found the names, addresses and other information pertaining to business con- cerns, professional men, organizations, schools, etc. in Jacksonville, each classified under the heading which appropriately indicates the nature of the business or organization. This section reflects the num- erous interests of the community to a great degree, and, by so doing, is of considerable value in transactions of a business or other nature.
THE STORY OF JACKSONVILLE is, as its title indicates, the authentic story of the City, telling something of its early history, its growth down the years, its scope and advantages of today and its goal for the future.

High- way 17, major North-South highway, runs through the edge of the city. Camp Lejeune, a major installation of the United States Marine Corps, borders the city, with the main gate being approxima- tely 1 mile away. Jacksonville is approximately 40 miles from New Bern, 50 miles from Wilmington, and 140 miles from Raleigh. A channel 12 feet deep, 90 feet wide and 21 miles long (from Jackson- (Next Page Please)

ville to the Inland Waterway) has been approved by the house com- mittee on rivers and harbors.
Excellent Residential City
With weather comparable to much warmer climes, Jacksonville is a fine place to live. No extremes of heat or cold are to be found in the area, and snow is so infrequent as to be almost a rarity.
Fine schools, churches and homes enhance the favorableness of Jacksonville for homeseekers, and these factors, coupled with a mod- ern, up-to-date city affording residents all the conveniences of municipalities far greater in size, prove an irresistible combination to those seeking a new place to live and work. Fine hunting, fishing and swimming are all available to residents of Jacksonville within a short radius of the city.
The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, with offices in the Riverview Hotel, solicits the opportunity to answer any and all questions regarding the city and its potentialities for homeseekers and business interests.
Industry and Transportation
Jacksonville is a city with modern and progressive business es- tablishments, offering practically every product and service afforded by a municipality of much greater size. The retail center is especially large, with stores both large and small catering to the needs of the citizens. Many hotels and restaurants are found here, which cater to an ever-increasing number of transient visitors who are attracted
to the city by reason of its tourist attractions, not the least of which is nearby Camp Lejeune. Rail and highway transportation (increased water transportation on New River will follow upon completion of a project to deepen the waterway now pending) are available, and all indications point to an expansion of industry in the near future. The Jacksonville Airport, a short distance out on the New Bern highway, (See Page Twelve Please)

is one of the better-equipped flying fields in the State, with hard- surfaced runways.
Jacksonville is the trading area for Onslow County, which has been a progressive tobacco-growing section for many years. Great strides are being made in other branches of agriculture in the county, especially in diversification, all of which should react favorably upon the economic life of the municipality. Onslow County hams are a famous product of agriculture in the county.
Commercial fishing along the sounds and the ocean on the east- ern boundaries of the county have also long been a part of the busi- ness life of Jacksonville. New River oysters are known over a wide area for their excellence.
Telephone service is provided in the community by the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company, Inc., while electric power is furn- ished by the Tide Water Power Company, of Wilmington and the federal-owned REA system.
Retail trade in Jacksonville amounts to several millions of dollars annually, while the operation in the Jacksonville area of pulpwood in- terests, lumber mills, bottling plants, building material manufac- turers, and ice plant, and the huge military installation at Camp Le- jeune rounds out the well-balanced industrial aspect of the city. Jacksonville is also a large distribution point for petroleum products with all major oil companies represented.
Growth
While Jacksonville is still a small city compared to some munici- palities, it has shown a considerable population increase over the past few years, and there are indications that, unlike some of the other war-benefited cities of the country, it is still growing. Since the be- ginning of the war the town has more than quadrupled in population within the city limits, while the section immediately adjacent has in addition shown similar population gains. Midway Park, a community of 1,100 units, where live personnel for Camp Lejeune, was not even in existence prior to 1940. Several large sub-divisions have been built in the past few years which are a part of the city.
To keep pace with the growth of Jacksonville, great increases have been made in the matter of an adequate water supply, sewerage disposal, and paved streets. Increased facilities for education have been provided, while in the Onslow County Hospital Jacksonville can point with pride to a fine institution of this kind.
Hunting and Fishing
Jacksonville is situated within one of the finest areas to be imag- ined when it comes to either hunting or fishing. Hoffman Forest, a state-managed forest and preserve, comprises an area of 83,000 acres just a short distance from the city and abounds in deer, bear, quail, squirrel, turkey, raccoon and o'possum. Organized hunts,

A pine tree, a cornfield and a chan- nel bass may appear to be three totally unrelated things, but lumber- ing, farming and fishing resources of Onslow have all contributed their bit to the growth of the Jacksonville of today.

under forester supervision are staged in the preserve during the hunting season. Hunting for similar types of game is excellent in other forest areas nearby. Waterfowl shooting along the coast not far from Jacksonville is of the best. Geese, ducks and marsh hen are taken in satisfying quantities.
Both fresh and salt water fishing are available in the Jackson- ville area to the sport fisherman. Channel bass, blues, trout, whiting and many other varieties of salt-water fish are caught along the beaches and at the inlets near Jacksonville. Fulcher's Landing, along the lower beaches of New River, is a favorite point of departure for such fishermen. New River affords many varieties of fresh water fish, as do other fresh water spots close to Jacksonville. In fact, New River, skirting the city within a block or two of the main busi- ness section, has long been known favorably to fresh water fishermen over a wide area.
History
There are records of Jacksonville as far back as 1757, and the early origin of the community was around a ferry which operated over New River at this point. It was once called Wantland's Ferry. The county in which it is situated (Onslow) was formed in 1734 and named in honor of Arthur Onslow, for 30 years Speaker of the British House of Commons. English and German settlers came to the colony and many of their descendents still dwell within the borders of On- slow and the City of Jacksonville.
Camp Lejeune
Camp Lejeune is built up around the eastern borders of Jackson- ville, and the city points with considerable pride to the gigantic mili- tary installation grown up hard by its confines. The base is literally one of the largest industries in southeastern North Carolina and un- doubtedly plays a major part in the economic life of Jacksonville and other adjacent communities.
Camp Lejeune was built during the past war and covers an area 173.68 square miles. It has its own fire and police departments, public works department, power plants, warehouses, schools, churches, theatres, hospitals etc. and is truly a city within itself.
With its own attractions as a great military establishment, coupled with the transformation of the area into a paradise of flow- ering plants and landscaping gems, the camp is fast becoming a major tourist attraction in eastern North Carolina.
