PREFACE

ASHEBORO Center of North Carolina PREFACE

Asheboro, the seat of Randolph County, is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, and is in almost the geographical center of the State. It is about 180 miles east of Asheville and the same distance northwest of Wilmington.

POPULATION

The population of Asheboro has grown tremendously during the past few years as the 1940 Federal Census was 6,981 and the directory census of 1941 gives Asheboro a population of 8,410. The population of Greater Asheboro is 11,011. This includes the adjacent territory and includes the total count as made by this issue of the Asheboro city directory. Less than 15 percent of this population is colored and less than three-tenths of one percent is foreign born.

GOVERNMENT

Asheboro has a Mayor and five Aldermen who are elected every two years.

MANUFACTURING

Asheboro is an ideal location for manufacturing plants, as the town is centrally located in respect to the large manufacturing centers of the State, thus making available an abundance of skilled labor. Asheboro industries include Hosiery Mills, Furniture Factories, Silk Mills, Lumber Plants, Box Manufacturers, Chair Factories, Flour Mill, Broom Factory, Iron Foundry, and numerous smaller industries. The annual combined industrial payroll of Asheboro exceeds $3,500,000.

PUBLIC UTILITIES

Asheboro is served with electricity for lighting and power by the Carolina Power & Light Company, whose distribution system covers the entire city. The water system is municipally owned and water is obtained from three lakes located near the city limits. The water is filtered and treated before being pumped into the city mains. A monthly analysis is made by the North Carolina Board of Health, thus assuring a constant supply of pure water. Telephone service is maintained by the Central Electric and Telephone Company. Telegraph service may be had by both Western Union and Postal Telegraph Companies.

PREFACE

PREFACE (cont.)

TRANSPORTATION

Asheboro has two railroads. The Norfolk-Southern from Asheboro to Aberdeen, an dthe High Point, Randleman, Asheboro and Southern, from High Point to Asheboro. Both of these railroads connect with their main lines, thus giving prompt service to any point desired. Five state highways converge at Asheboro and all of the principal cities of the State may be easily reached. These highways afford adequate facilities for automobile transportation.

FINANCIAL FACILITIES

Asheboro's two banking houses, The First National Bank, and the Bank of Randolph, stand at the top, and their total resources are over $3,500,000. The two Building and Loan Associations are adequately equipped to handle the building needs of Asheboro.

EDUCATION AND RELIGION

Asheboro has an accredited school system for both white and colored children. Asheboro has an enviable state-wide reputation for its activities in moral and religious standing. The following denomi nations have church buildings: Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Holi- ness, Episcopal, Quaker, Lutheran and Evangelical and Reformed.

RECREATION AND SPORTS

During the spring of 1937 Asheboro celebrated the opening of a nine hole Golf Course that was constructed under the supervision of the famous Donald Ross.

In the athletic park known as the "Lindley Field," Asheboro has an excellent baseball diamond and football field for use of the High School students and local industrial league baseball teams.

In 1936 a community gymnasium was placed in the service of the citizens of Asheboro. This is used for high school athletics and for various community basketball teams.

Asheboro has two teams in two industrial baseball leagues.

Asheboro has three modern motion picture theatres.

The Mccrary Eagles, representing the Mccrary Hosiery Mills of Asheboro, won the state semi-pro baseball tournament in 1937, defeating various organizations throughout the state, including the crack Lucky Strike baseball team of Durham, N. C.

CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS

Asheboro has a great variety of civic and fraternal organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Retail Merchants Association, Rotary, Business and Professional Women's Club, Kiwanis Club, Wom- an's Club and the Sorosis Club. Various fraternal, social, and charitable organizations assist in building a greater and better Asheboro.

AGRICULTURE

From an agricultural standpoint Randolph County is ideally located. There is a variety of soil types with the Alamance and Georgeville series predominating. The soil is well adapted to the growing of small grain, hay, corn, cotton and tobacco. Farms are principally owner-operated, which is an important factor in the growth of dairying and stock raising. Great strides have been made in the production of milk and butterfat through the enlargement of existing herds and im- provement of the strain of cattle in the county through the introduction of registered stock.
