PREFACE
ASHEBORO Center of North Carolina
PREFACE
ASHEBORO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
By REV. J. E. PRITCHARD Member Publicity Committee
Asheboro, the seat of Randolph County, is located in the Piedmont section of North Carolina and is near if not the exact geographical center of the state. It is about 180 miles east of Asheville, and is approximately the same number of miles northwest of Wilmington. It is 26 miles south of Greensboro and 56 miles north of Pinehurst, the famous winter resort. The elevation of the city is 855 feet above sea level. The heart of the business district is on the highest point between two important water sheds, which furnish the city adequate drainage with no danger of floods. The mean temperature for Asheboro, according to complete weather records kept over a period of 21 years, is 60.3 degrees. Zero temper- atures are exceedingly rare and 100 degree temperatures have been recorded only a very few times at the Weather Bureau. During the year 1948 there were 183 days that were classified as clear, 85 partly cloudy and only 98 cloudy.
Asheboro is located in what is known as the Uwharrie Mountain range and from almost any place in the city, beautiful small mountains several hundred feet high can be seen. These unfold a variety of beau- tiful scenery from every highway in the county.
POPULATION
Asheboro has long been known as the city that doubles its population every ten years. The 1940 Federal Census gave Asheboro a population of 6,981. (1949 City Directory population ---- 11,897). With the enlarge- ment of so many of the large industrial plants and building of new ones, as well as the construction of many new homes, it is safe to say that the 1950 census will give Asheboro proper a population of 12,000 and greater Asheboro a population of 18,000.
GOVERNMENT
Asheboro is governed by a Mayor and five commissioners elected every two years. Their policies are executed by a City Manager.
MANUFACTURING
Asheboro is an ideal location for manufacturing plants since the (Continued on Page 9)

PREFACE
PREFACE (Cont.)

town is centrally located in relation to other manufacturing centers in the state. Asheboro industries include some of the largest hosiery mills in the state, furniture factories, chair factories, silk and rayon weaving mills, flashlight batteries, knitwear mills, flour mills, lumber plants, box manufacturing plants, excelsior plants, freezer locker plants, iron foundry, bed spread manufacturing plants, and many other smaller industries, including the making of neckties, hankerchiefs, etc.
PUBLIC UTILITIES
Asheboro is served with electricity for lighting and power by the Carolina Power and Light Co., whose distributing system covers the entire city and surrounding communities as well as a number of other cities in the state. The REA also serves Randolph County through the Randolph Electric Membership Corp. For the past several years, water has been pumped into the city from three lakes. However, a huge dam has been constructed across Back Creek about four miles west of the city and 1,453,000,000 gallons of water has been impounded which will be a sufficient volume to serve a city of 80,000 population. This will guarantee an ample supply of water for all purposes for many years to come.
. Telephone service is furnished by the Central Telephone Co., one of the large independent companies in the country. Telegraph service is rendered by the Western Union Company.
Asheboro is served by two railroads -- the High Point, Randleman, Asheboro, and Southern Railway connecting with the Southern Railway's main line in High Point, and by the Norfolk & Southern Railway, con- necting the Norfolk & Southern's main line at Star and the main line of the Seaboard Air Line at Aberdeen.
Asheboro is also served by several bus lines, both local and long distance.
Five U. S. and State highways converge in Asheboro furnishing ample facilities for travel in all directions.
FINANCIAL FACILITIES
Asheboro has two strong banks, the First National and the Bank of Randolph. The combined resources of these two banks amount to $13,500,000. Two building and loan associations are adequately equip- ped to finance all building projects.
EDUCATION AND RELIGION
Asheboro has an accedited public school system for both white and colored children. Asheboro also has a state wide reputation for its moral and religious standing. The following denominations have con-

gregations here: Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Congrega- tional Christian, Holiness, Friends, Protestant Episcopal, Evangelical and Reformed, Lutheran and the Church of God.
RECREATION AND SPORTS
Asheboro is fast becoming a Sports Center. The Kiwanis Club Horse Show and the State Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament, sponsored by the Lions Club, bring thousands of visitors to Asheboro annually. There is a nine hole public golf course. Directors of the Asheboro Country Club have recently purchased a large tract of land containing a lake and plans are now being developed for the contruction of a club house and an 18 hole golf course. Lindley Athletic Field and the McCrary Athletic Field are two of the best lighted fields in the state. The city also has a community gymnasium in which basketball games are played by practically all the college teams of the state. The Mccrary Eagles and Lucas Industries each put on the court fast competition for the collegiate quintets.
The latest addition to Asheboro's recreation program is the $150,000 Asheboro Memorial Foundation, Inc. Swimming pool operated by the City Recreation Department.
A Teen Age Club building has recently been constructed by the Kiwanis Club for the use of junior citizens.
CIVIC AND FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS
Asheboro's civic spirit is shown best in its variety of civic and fraternal organizations, which include Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Civitan Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, Retail Merchant's Association, both Junior and Senior Woman's Clubs, Sorosis Club, Elks Lodge 1694, American Legion, Dixon Post 45, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Randolph Cotillion Club, Masonic Lodge (Balfour Lodge 188), Chamber of Commerce, Graduate Nurses Association, and many others. All of these furnish opportunity for social and fraternal contacts which add to the joy of living in Asheboro.
THE RANDOLPH HOSPITAL, INC.
Asheboro is exceedingly fortunate in having within its borders the Randolph Hospital, Inc. The first unit of this modern hospital was built in 1931 and was opened in 1932. Since then it has been enlarged twice and a new addition to cost $125,000 is now under construc- tion. Upon completion, the plant will house a total of 102 regular beds and 30 bassinettes. A beautiful Solarium for convalescents has been erected on the hospital's roof. This hospital has the most modern equipment and is manned by a most competent staff of experts in the medical profession. Graduate nurses are used in all of the departments

and these are assisted by competent nurses' aids. A beautiful home for nurses is located on the grounds near the hospital. The Nurses' Home and the Hospital are constructed of the same kind of material and the architectural design is such as to make it certain that both plants are a part of a general plan to give harmony and beauty to the entire institution.
While a majority of the patients come from Asheboro and Randolph County, an increasing number of patients are being admitted from other counties and even from out of the state.
