PREFACE
CANTON, N. C. PREFACE
Canton is located in the Western part of North Carolina in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, and in the East Central sec- tion of Haywood County on Highway U, S. 19 at Junction of State Highway 284, going to Pisgah and the Pink Beds.
The city is protected from extreme temperature in winter and summer by the nearby mountain peaks that rise thousands of feet in height. It enjoys a year round climate that is unexcelled any- where. The difference between the mean July temperature and that of January is only 33.5 degrees, while the difference between the annual mean temperature and that of July is only 17 1 degrees. Canton is also protected from the storms of the Middle Western Plains. The summer nights are ccoled by the mountain breezes and the temperature frequently ranges as low as 20 degrees lower than that of midday.
The average date last killing frost in spring is April 15th; average date first killing frost in fall is October 20th.
GOVERNMENT
The Town of Canton has been under the Commission form of Government since its incorporation. There is a Mayor and three members of the Board of Commissioners. An efficient police force is maintained, and the town is protected from fire by a volunteer department.
The Town of Canton was first known as Pigeon Ford, until 1891, when it was incorporated as "Pigeon River," and in 1905 charter was amended to "Town of Canton."
EDUCATION AND RELIGION
The Town of Canton has six substantially built schools, five graded and one High School, all for white, and one colored school, (all having the highest state rating), and a number of churches representing the following denominations: Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and Holiness. These are also three churches for colored.
Recreational and vocational training can be obtained through the Champion Y. M. C. A. There is a Branch of Columbia Univer- sity located near Canton known as the New College Community.
RECREATIONAL
Within a radius of a few miles is located Lake Junaluska, the vacation and conference center of the South for Southern Metho- dists, and Lake Logan, where large acreage is given over to hunt- ing and fishing, general camping and outings. Camp Hope, which has been operated by the Champion Y. M. C. A. for several years, . and which is located within a few miles of Canton, is now being reconstructed with an approximate expenditure of $8,000 to $10,000, which when completed will undoubtedly be the best camp in this section of the state and will be under the supervision of the

Champion Y. M. C. A., which has the second largest membership in the state.
INDUSTRY
Canton is essentially the "Home of Industry." It has within its boundaries one of the largest pulp and paper plants in the world, owned and operated by the Champion Paper & Fibre Com- pany. The daily output of this plant is over three hundred tons of pulp, paper and board. In addition the plant also produces tanning extracts, caustic soda, turpentine, So-Hi, and adhesives. Mineral resources are rich and varied. Chief among these is Kaolin, Feldspar. Gold, silver and copper ores are found in the county. A large supply of lumber for industrial uses is available from the surrounding forests and within easy reach of Canton.
FARMING AND MARKETING
The country surrounding Canton has many excellent farms and orchards, and a large number of dairies, which rate very high. A ready market is available for all farm and dairy products in this section.
TRADE AND COMMERCE
Canton is the trading center of approximately 10,000 people living in Haywood and adjoining counties. The county population is 28,273, of which 27,503 is white and 695 negro. The labor supply of Canton is high class workers, intelligent, tractable, readily trained, and are 98 per cent native.
WATER AND TRANSPORTATION
The water supply of Canton is derived by gravity from moun- tain springs and streams. This water is of the finest quality, and is unlimited and dependable. However, for emergencies a new pressure and pump filter plant is now being completed at an ap- proximate cost of $100,000, which is capable of furnishing a daily output of two million gallons of water daily. This water shows an analysis of approximately 100 percent pure.
Canton is served by the Southern Railway, which has been here since about 1887. There are four passenger trains daily through Canton, and a complete system of paved highways, assuring up-to- date bus and freight transportation.
CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS
Canton has a number of civic and fraternal organizations, in- cluding the Chamber of Commerce, the Civitan Club, Y's Mens Club, Y. M. C. A., The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, The Senior Woman's Club, The Junior Woman's Club, The American Red Cross, the Masons, Juniors, Dokies, and Odd Fellows, 30th Signal Company of the National Guards.
Hydro-electric power for the use of Canton and its industries is supplied by the Carolina Power & Light Company. This com- pany is a unit in one of the great Southern "super-power" systems, its lines being inter-connected with those of other large producers of hydro-electric power. They have located at Canton one of their
