Stability and Permanency
Do you realize that a City Directory adver- tisement is a testimonial to the permanency, the stability, of the advertiser?
That's the sort of concern all of us want to patronize, because we know when they sell us merchandise they are behind it in every 1
way, today, tomorrow, and for the years to come.
"FLY - BY - NIGHT," "FIRE - SALE" and other temporary or "GET-RICH-QUICK" concerns rarely appear in the City Directory.
And it is a noteworthy fact that the concerns which advertise one year in the city directory are there again next year. 90% of directory advertising is renewed.
Directory advertising is profitable. In connection with the clas- sified business headings it is doubly effective.
May We Explain How and Why It Will Pay You?

PREFACE
CHARLOTTE, N. C. THE TEXTILE CENTER OF THE SOUTH
Altitude 780 Feet
Twenty years ago the South began to arouse from her bed of rich, deep tra- ditions and bestir herself. There is a new South today-an onward driving, pul- sating South in industry, agriculture and finance.
Fundamentally, successful industries develop best where abundant raw mate- rials, mechanical power and stable population combine. Tremendously rich in natural resources, power and raw materials, the South has strided forward with seven-league boots, and today, the economic advantages resulting from the devel- opment of her resources are leading the trail of industry Southward.
This is true, not only in the textile field, where advantageous conditions of power, climate, labor and living conditions at the source of raw materials have al- ready transferred the center of industry from New England to the South, but in other lines of diversified manufacturing as well.
North Carolina today is the pacemaker of the South; it leads in textile man- ufacturing and 'hydro-electric power development and Charlotte is the center of a textile manufacturing territory having 770 mills, operating over 10,000,000 spin- dles and consuming more cotton than any other section in the world.
It is the center of one of the largest hydro-electric developments in the United States-the total horsepower developed and in immediate prospect of developing being more than a million horse power.
It is the largest center in the South for textile mill machinery and equipment, practically all the large companies in the United States and England handling their entire business in the South through Charlotte offices and plants.
Is the "Southern Market" for dyestuffs-laboratories and offices being main- tained here by the leading dye corporations of the country.
Annual payrolls of over 20 million dollars, from the more than two hundred widely diversified manufacturing and industrial plants in Charlotte.
AS A MANUFACTURING CENTER CHARLOTTE OFFERS:
1. Low power for manufacturing purposes.
2. Close proximity to the sources of all material for finished products.
3. Cotton, cotton yarns, cotton seed, cotton oil, tobacco, peanuts kaolin, wood pulp, lumber, etc.
4. It is the logical location for a manufacturer of commodities for export through the ports of Norfolk, Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah.
5. A very desirable type of high-class labor, available to manufacturers.
6. Mild climatic conditions throughout the year. There are nine months of exceptional open-season weather.
7. The adequate transfer facilities of four railroads with daily terminal fa- cilities of 5,200 carloads.
8. Desirable living conditions and an exceptional residential development.

PREFACE (Continued)
NUMBER OF RESIDENTS HAS NEARLY DOUBLED SINCE 1920
MORE WOMEN THAN MEN
Fair Sex Outnumbers Men by 2,000-Total Number of Bread- winners is 41,404
Charlotte will begin the year with a population of more than 80,000 residents within the municipal limits, according to the 1930 Census.
It is estimated that the population of Charlotte and its suburbs in 1931 will be in excess of 90,000. An official census taken in 1928 by the U. S. Census Bureau showed a population of approximately 81,000. The 1930 census was 82,645.
More Women Than Men
An interesting feature of the population statistics as revealed by our survey was the fact that there are more women than men living in Charlotte. The figures were 46,286 women as compared with 44,073 men.
Our survey also showed that the number of women earning a livelihood in Charlotte is nearly half as great as the number of men. The total number of breadwinners, according to the survey, is 41,404, of whom 28,139 are men. In 1920 there were only 26,233 wage-earners in the city.
The number of families in Charlotte in 1930 was 20,904, as compared with 10,720 families living here in 1920.
Persons of Voting Age
There is a total of 52,446 persons over 21 years old in the city, and of this number there are approximately 1,000 more women than men, according to our records.
The number of persons over 10 years old is 71,181, of whom 34,494 are males and 36,687 are females, as compared with 17,419 males and 19,084 females in 1920.
Our survey is based on excess of births over deaths in the city since 1920, the increase in youths of school age, and the increase in domestic water service and other factors having a bearing on population figures.

Historical Facts of Mecklenburg County
THE BEGINNING OF CHARLOTTE
The town of Charlotte, the county seat of Mecklenburg, was incorporated in the year 1768. A courthouse, constructed of logs, had been built in the town a few years previous to its incorporation, and the county court was held there, which probably accounted for Charlotte being selected as the county seat. The court house was located at the intersection of the streets now known as Trade and Tryon Streets.
SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION
The people of Mecklenburg brought with them, in the settlement of their new country, the love of education. The first schools were conducted in the homes of the teachers or their patrons. Prior to the time of the American Revo- lution a number of school buildings had been erected. Queens College, or Museum, located within Charlotte, but within bounds of Sugar Creek Church, was the most noted school of Colonial times in Mecklenburg county. This college was located on a lot on South Tryon Street where later, for many years, stood the Mecklen- burg County Court House.
CHURCHES AND RELIGION
Seven churches of importance in Colonial days in Mecklenburg county were. Sugar Creek, Rocky River, Poplar Tent, Hopewell, Steel Creek, Providence and Centre. The congregations of these early churches were composed of men ani women of strong character, high motives and dignified demeanor. To their influ- ence throughout the community and upon succeeding generations may be attri- buted the fine type cf Christian citizenship which has characterized the people of Mecklenburg county. Many members of the families composing these seven Colonial churches have gone out to other sections of the I'nited States, particu- larly to the southwestern and middle-western sections of the country, to estah . lish homes and to carry with them the fine ideals of citizenship and Christian influence to their Mecklenburg ancestry. Numbers of the descendants of these Mecklenburg citizens who have moved to other parts of the United States make pilgrimages to the old churches to read upon tombstones in the ancient burying grounds the record of the lives of their forefathers. Upon anniversary occa- sions at these historic churches, all-day services are held and men and women from many distant states are numbered among the persons in attendance.

CHARLOTTE THE QUEEN CITY
Charlotte is located in the center of a territory recognized as the most rapidly developing industrial and commercial section in the South. The eyes of the commercial as well as tourist world are focused on the Piedmont Carolinas-the section of which Char- lotte is the geographic and industrial center.
Hard surface roads radiate from Charlotte in every direction : Eleven highways entering Charlotte. The National Highway crosses North Carolina State Highway at Charlotte, North Caro- lina has 9,000 miles of paved roads. Two million people can come to Charlotte from a radius of one hundred miles by automobile, transact business and return home in the same day.
Charlotte is the distributing center of the Carolinas and is the natural radial point for the railroads of this section. There are eight railway lines radiating from Charlotte, this situation making possible a maximum of railway trackage for new industries of var- ious kinds. Charlotte has an abundance of skilled and unskilled labor willing to give an honest day's work for a reasonable wage. Charlotte is not disturbed by continued labor difficulties, strikes and labor agitation.
The quality of Charlotte's water supply is excellent, the supply aboundant, with a modern filter plant, completed at the cost of $1,500,000.00.
Electricity, ample and at low rates, has been probably the greatest factor in the industrial and commercial development of Charlotte.
Charlotte's rapid growth as a manufacturing and business center has developed financial institutions commensurate with the demands of our rapidly growing city and section which they serve,
