Preface
No city or town of today can expect to prosper or progress without making adequate municipal improvements; without such it will never be looked upon as being any good, or having any future; but simply will be called dead or a has-been. In business circles the City Directory is just as important to the health and vigor of a business, whatever line it may be, as municipal improvements are to the health and vigor of a town; they both go hand in hand; they both mean progress; for they both stand for
MODERN EFFICIENCY
which fact is being more vividly demonstrated every day; for there are thousands of City Directories in use now, where there were to be found comparatively very few only a very short period ago.
The business world has awakened to the realization of this need; and there are few towns of any consequence that do not today have a City Directory. Just how up-to-date or complete a Directory is, de- pends in most eases upon the support accorded to the publishers; pro- vided, of course, that the publisher is reliable. Only well-known, re- liable and experienced directory publishers should be given support. The fly-by-night or unreliable publisher' has done much to hurt the directory business.
It is an old saying that you can judge a man by the clothes he wears whether this be true or not matters little: we all know that it is generally done; often no doubt to the disadvantage of someone. Just as much as man is judged by his clothes, just so much is the business life and activities of a town or community judged by its Directory; because the Directory is the most complete and the only recognized standard book of reference regarding the citizens of a community, thelr address, occupation or kind of business in which they are engaged. When you consult a Directory of a town, you can easily determine if It Is up to standard, and if you find it to be well patronized, you need not be told that it belonged to a live community-the fact is self- evident. The Directory is the Catalog of your City.
It is with pleasure that we present Vol. VII of the CONCORD, N. C., CITY DIRECTORY, for the fact is self evident that we are doing business in a live community.

(*) A star (*) is often used in most directories for various purposes. A star (*) or hand () is used in the Business Department of a directory to denote a special classification or listing; sometimes in the Street Department, in front or after a number, to denote a business place; it may be used, at the option of the publisher, to denote a married or single person; it is most generally used before or after a name to denote a colored person. Its use, however, being 60 general, the Publishers will not assume any responhllity for error or its wrong use.
