PREFACE
Elizabeth City, North Carolina
"Queen Of The Albemarle"
PREFACE
Almost four centuries ago the first English visitors came to Elizabeth City. They were a group of fourteen men sent by Captain Ralph Lane from Roanoke Island to explore the inland waters in 1584, and "Cer- tainly by 1663, there were numerous settlers scattered here abouts."
In 1790, after the Dismal Swamp Canal was dug, Elizabeth City developed as a seaport and began vigorous trade with the West Indies and the Eastern coast.
With the decline in shipping, Elizabeth City retained its reputa- tion as being the trading and shopping center of the Albemarle- Pamlico area of northeastern North Carolina. Elizabeth City is the commercial center for this large agricultural area, which produces corn, soybeans, irish potatoes, small grain, cabbage, and other vegetables. The mild, moderate temperature makes it possible to produce two and three crops, per year. Cattle, swine, and sheep are also produced.
Industrial growth has been slow, but the area has numerous indus- tries producing a variety of products, including plywood, veneer, ex- celsior, boxes, lumber, and other wood products, cinder blocks, textiles, hosiery, garment manufacturers, candy, iron works, shipbulding, feed and seed mixing plants, fertilizer plant, and grain elevators. Just re- cently, the old Elizabeth City Naval Air Facility, which has been closed since 1957, was leased to a private industry for a multi-million dollar seaplane modification plant.
Elizabeth City has a modern up-to-date school system, with many new buildings. Its schools are accredited by Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. Also located in Elizabeth City is the State Teachers College (colored), which is one of the finest of the state. The College of The Albemarle, a new junior college; The Roanoke Bible College; and the Carolina School of Commerce.
All of the leading denominations of churches are found in Eliza- beth City.
Elizabeth City is also the medical center of northeastern North Carolina. It has a new 150 bed hospital, which is one of the most modern in the State. Adjoining is a nurse's home and a registered nurse's training program will be initiated in the near future. Elizabeth City is also headquarters for the District Health Department and the total of 23 doctors and physicians are located in Elizabeth City.
The Winslow Memorial Home for the aged, a quarter million dollar home, given to the area by a former citizen in memory of his mother and father, opened December 1960. There are other nursing homes in the area.

PREFACE
PREFACE
(Continued from page 7)
The government of Elizabeth City is run by the Mayor, City Coun- cil, and City Manager form of government. The electric lights, power, water, and sewerage are municipally owned by the Public Utilities Commission. Excellent telephone and telegraph services are furnished by private companies. Just out of the city is the U. S. Coast Guard Air Station and the Coast Guard Aviation Repair and Supply Base, both of which are the largest in the country.
All of the larger civic organizations are represented in Elizabeth City. These include civic clubs - Cosmopolitan, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, and Ruritan; Ladies' Clubs - Woman's, B & PW, Jr. Woman's, Soroptimist, Garden and Music Clubs; and others - Ameri- can Legion, Eastern Star, Elks, Masons, Moose, Red Men, V.F.W., Wild- life Club, and other miscellaneous organizations.
The city has 19 acres of property to be developed for recreational purposes. Adjoining this area is 6 acres, purchased by the Boys Club, where they plan to build a new building, football field, and baseball fields. Other recreation in the area include: Indoor and Drive-in Theaters, Bowling Alleys, Public Tennis Courts, Neighborhood Play- grounds, Park and Public Pool, Golf Club, Golf Club Pool, Stock Car Races, Boy Scouts, Boys' Club, Little League Baseball, Junior Rifle Club, Girl Scouts, Girls Club, and Armory, Tournament Bridge Skating Rink, A Little Theater, and numerous Clubs and Societies.
In addition to the above recreation, which is available in Elizabeth City, the area offers unsurpassed recreation in the form of hunting and fishing, and is the gateway to the fabulous Outer Bank beaches and an unsurpassed area filled with history.
American history and the Albemarle area are synonomous. The First English Settlement was in this area to our south and the First Permanent English Settlement was about the same distance north. In- teresting reminders of the early days are the Old Brick House, which is said to have been one of the hideouts of Blackbeard the Pirate, and the Old English Home, which was the site of the first open rebellion against the King in 1677, commonly called "Culpepper's Rebellion." In Pasquotank County was the first school, the first Baptist Church, and the first General Assembly of North Carolina.
Elizabeth City has an active City Planning Commission and an Urban Development Program and Public Housing Program and is well underway.
Elizabeth City welcomes newcomers, and if you are looking for a location where southern hospitality abounds and friendliness over- flows, you will find it in abundance in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
