POPULATION


Population of Greater Elizabeth City is 13,895, with a trading population of over 75,000.


LOCATION


Elizabeth City is the metropolis of Northeastern North Caro- lina, the trading center for ten counties. It is located on the main line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, on the headwaters of the Pasquotank River, and on the Atlantic Coastal Highway (U. S. Route No. 17), also on the new ocean highway. Hard surfaced roads radiate in all directions from the city. It is within a few hours of the greatest markets in the country.


CLIMATE


Average temperature 60 degrees, average yearly rainfall, 45.5 inches.


BANKS


Elizabeth City has two commercial banks, one industrial bank, one auto discount corporation, one joint land bank, and a build- ing and loan association with resources over $14,000,000.


EDUCATION-RELIGIOUS-HEALTH


Elizabeth City has invested over $650,000.00 in its school build- ings, of which there are three buildings for the white race and three buildings for the colored race, ranking among the best in the State. Both white and colored high schools are North Carolina accredited, which are modernly equipped. In addition to the city schools, the State Normal (colored), representing a $500,000,00 investment, is located here.


Churches of the leading denominations are found in Elizabeth City.


Living conditions are good, with modern public improvements and cool local sanitary regulations. The sanitation of the city is under the supervision of the city physician. Milk sold in Elizabeth City is from Grade A dairies. A full-time chemist is in charge of the water and filtration plant with completely equipped chemical laboratories. Also the Albemarle Hospital, modernized with 35 beds, fully equipped laboratory and X-Ray.


Elizabeth City also has a rapidly growing public library, spon- sored by the local Woman's Club, providing easily reading and ref- erence materials.

GOVERNMENT


Elizabeth City has the Mayor, City Council, City Manager form of Government. Electric lights, power, water and sewerage is mu- nicipally owned. Excellent telephone and telegraph service; good gas service, electric super-power.


AGRICULTURE-INDUSTRIES


The agricultural territory surrounding Elizabeth City is a very rich trucking section, also staple crops such as cotton, corn, soy beans, peanuts, etc.


The industries are: lumber, building supplies, brick manufac- turing, hosiery mills, cotton mills, ice manufacturing plants, fertil- izer plant, cotton seed oil mill, furniture factory, ice cream plant, box factories, modern marine railway, basket and crate factories, candy manufacturing plants, soy bean harvester manufacturing plants, iron and foundary works, pickle plants, meat packing plants, etc.


CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS-CLUBS


Elizabeth City has various civic organizations and clubs, in- cluding Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Woman's Club, Elizabeth City Country Club, American Legion, Elk's Club and Chamber of Com- merce-Merchants Association, Inc.
