PREFACE
Greenville, N. C.
"The Hub of Eastern Carolina"
PREFACE
POPULATION GREATER GREENVILLE - 14,012
This city directory depicts the various opportunities Green- ville has to offer as its position industriously, agriculturally, com- mercially and educationally. Greenville stands unparalleled as the center of operation of the great eastern region of North Carolina.
CLIMATE
This section of which Greenville is the hub, fortune has blessed with a pleasant year around climate where there is no fear of storm or flood of destructive nature. The yearly average temperature is 61 degrees, the winters being mild and the other seasons ideal.
SHOPPING CENTER
There is no city of the East which has developed as rapidly as has Greenville as a shopping center. The wonderful highway system of Eastern Carolina with the city's high standard mercan- tile establishments, ranking second to none in their respective bus- inesses, has contributed much in directing the public from twenty- five counties to Greenville, covering a radius of seventy-five miles. The city is worthy of the distinction it has attained of being '(East Carolina's Shopping Center."
DISTRIBUTING CENTER
With the building of the great highway system of the eastern section of the State, by which Greenville is webbed, the city has gained recognition among many of the large manufacturers as the most logical distributing point, and as a result scores of such enter- prises have taken advantage of these economical conveniences and placed their units and warehouses for district and State distribu- tion in Greenville. There are seven hard surfaced highways leading from the city radiating in every direction which enables salesmen to serve a large territory within a short period of time.
AGRICULTURE
From a standpoint of agriculture, Greenville is situated in the heart of one of the greatest agricultural sections of the entire world. The various soils of this section are adapted to the pro- duction of any crops grown in any of the Southern States. Tobacco, cotton, peanuts and potatoes are the principal money crops with the farmers, while an abundance of grains and other feeds are provided for the live stock.

PREFACE
PREFACE (cont'd)
TOBACCO MARKET
Pitt County, of which Greenville is the capital, grows and sells more bright tobacco than any county in the world. Every buying interest, both large and small, is represented with sales force on the market and these operate scores of factory plants, furnishing labor for many thousands each tobacco season. Greenville is one of the few tobacco markets that has five sets of buyers. Eight large and modern tobacco factories and ten warehouses are located here. Greenville established a world's record in 1934 when it sold 51,188,- 384 pounds of tobacco for $16,077,682.78, for an average of $31.41 per hundred pounds.
GOVERNMENT
The City of Greenville has the Mayor-Aldermen form of gov- ernment. It has a municipally-owned water and light plant and a gas plant that is one of the city's greatest assets. The plants stand out foremost with the public utility institutions of the State. City tax rates have been reduced during the past five years until they are below the average.
EDUCATION AND RELIGION
Wonderful progress has been made by the city schools in the past decade and they have been a strong factor in the advancement of this city. The Greenville system is rated by the State Educa- tional Department as A-1, which rank cannot be excelled by any other high school of the State. With the location of the East Caro- lina Teachers College here, no city can boast of greater educational advantages. Another important feature which contributes much to the living conditions of Greenville is its fine and modern public library. The religious life of Greenville is an active one. The citi- zenship is a church-going people. And the ministers serving the fifteen or more congregations are outstanding with their respective communities of the State.
CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS
Greenville has various civic and fraternal organizations, in- cluding the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Woman's Club, Merchants' Association and numerous others. The civic organiza- tions of Greenville have as one of the principal objectives of their activities the continued progress of the city. And in all matters pertaining to the further advancement of Greenville these organized bodies have always functioned as one unit, and their efforts have not only been brought to a beneficial conclusion for the city, but have created an unequalled spirit of cooperation among the citizenship.

INTRODUCTION
GREENVILLE, N. C.
INTRODUCTION
Southern Directory Company, publishers of the Greenville city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1938-39 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this directory and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
The publishers have worked in cooperation with the Greenville Merchants Association to the end of building this directory along lines which, in their opinion, would best serve the public.
Confidence in the growth of Greenville, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for, truly, the directory is a mirror reflecting Greenville to the world.
Your attention is invited to those names appearing in DISPLAY BLACK TYPE throughout the directory as they are the responsible, enterprising, advertising business men who take pride in sustaining the city directory and who have made this publication possible.
POPULATION
The estimated population of Greenville is 14,012, based on the number of individuals found by actual canvass at each residence. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
FOUR MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
The several essential departments are arranged in the follow- ing order.
THE MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTORY, containing valuable in- formation concerning Local, State and National Governments, Churches, Schools, Colleges, Clubs, etc., included in pages 8 to 11.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, busi- ness firms and corporations is included starting on page 101.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 284 to 298. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community.
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE begins with page 299. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are ar- ranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders, with the number of occupants, and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.
