The City's public school system, ac- credited since 1917, has six schools, two of which are for Negroes, all operating for a full nine months term with the High Schools providing twelve grades. In the teachers staff are employed a higher percentage of instructors holding Master's Degrees than in any other community in the State. In addition to regular subjects taught, the City School System has recently added a Technical High School offering varied courses for which the best of equipment is provided.

PREFACE - GREENVILLE, N. C. (Continued from Page 7)

able factor in the City's educational and cultural life.

Educational facilities in Greenville provide opportunities for youth training from Kindergarten through a Master's Degree from college.

NEWSPAPERS: The Daily Reflector, published every afternoon ex- cept Sunday, provides excellent coverage of the immediate area.

TRANSPORTATION is provided by two railroad lines, the Atlantic Coast Line and the Norfolk-Southern, in addition to several motor freight lines. Supplementing the rail and motor freight facilities, seven hard- surfaced highways leading in all directions from Greenville, provide charter operators of motor trucks with safe avenues for operation in every direction. There are three passenger bus lines.

WATER TRANSPORTATION is provided by the Norfolk, Baltimore and Carolina Line which serves the Greenville Port Terminal connecting with boat lines at Norfolk, Virginia, for eastern ports, and at Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina, for ports in the South and the Gulf. Greenville is the most inland port in North Carolina having a channel twelve feet deep and one hundred feet wide over which is operated regularly scheduled boat transportation.

THE AIRPORT (C.A.A. Class 4), owned jointly by the city and the county and embracing an area of over seven hundred acres, with three five thousand foot paved runways, is one of the best municipal fields in the Southeast. Following the war, regular passenger, freight, and express air service was inaugurated.

COMMUNICATION facilities include Western Union Telegraph, the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company with a modern dial system, and nine incoming and eight outgoing mails daily.

RADIO STATION W.G.T.C., Greenville's locally owned radio station, the most modern in this section, serves a wide area of Eastern North Carolina, providing entertainment, news, and a publicity service of the highest type.

BANKING facilities are provided by two strong institutions, one operating branches in Greenville and other Eastern Carolina cities. Com- bined deposits in Greenville total $23,236,934.82, with combined re- sources of $24,876,777.67. The First Federal Savings and Loan Associa- tion and The Home Building and Loan Association, with combined deposits of $1,257,013.31, are important factors in residential construction and financing.

MARKETS: As an agricultural marketing center, Greenville is out- standing, being located in the center of a highly productive area, embrac- ing a population within a 50 mile radius of 543,000.

The Greenville Tobacco Market is one of the largest in the nation, and is one of the two that have five sets of buyers. Its ten mammoth auction warehouses, together with its processing plants, embrace an area of over two million square feet of floor space devoted to the handling of Bright Leaf flue cured tobacco. All major tobacco companies are repre-

In wholesale distribution, Greenville with a volume of over 45 million dollars yearly ranks sixth in the State. ("Copyright 1942 Sales Manage- ment Survey of buying power; further reproduction not licensed.") Greenville is a distribution center for Eastern Carolina.

TAXES in Greenville and Pitt County are among the lowest in the State, due to good business management of the officials. The City tax rate for 1946 is $1.00 per $100.00 assessed valuation. The total assessed valuation in Greenville is $11,788,916.00.

The county tax rate is 65 cents per $100.00 assessed valuation and the total assessed valuation is $37,703,182.00. Property in the city and county is listed for taxation at approximately two-thirds value.
