Greenville, North Carolina

"OUR GREENVILLE - YOURS IF YOU COME"

(Directory Population Territory Covered, 17,475)

HISTORY: One hundred seventy-six years ago, a group of citizens, realizing the importance and productiveness of the area embraced by Pitt County, and knowing that a place for trade and the seat of govern- ment would promote the progress they foresaw, requested Richard Evans to introduce a bill in the Assembly for the establishment of a town on lands he had offered for the purpose. The intent of the act was not carried out until 1774, when the town of Martinborough was estab- lished, which name was changed in 1786 to Greenville in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, the hero of the battle of Guilford Courthouse. Greenville is now the educational, and one of the most important com- mercial centers in the coastal plain section of North Carolina.

PITT COUNTY, of which Greenville is the County Seat, was formed in 1760, and named in honor of William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. To- bacco, as with many of the counties of Eastern North Carolina, and Virginia, was and is now the major cash crop. From the days when tobacco was packed by hand in hogsheads, through which an axle had been placed, and then rolled to boat landings for transfer to markets on the coasts, Pitt County has attained the distinction of being the largest producer of bright leaf, flue-cured tobacco in the nation. Instead of shipping the crop to other cities to market, more than two million square feet of floor space is now devoted to the sale and process'ng of tobacco.

GREENVILLE, the County Seat of Pitt County, is located in the Coastal Section of North Carolina, 84 miles East of Raleigh, the State Capital; 137 miles Southwest of Norfolk, Virginia; 159 miles South of Richmond, Virginia; and 267 miles South of Washington, D. C.

POPULATION: According to U. S. Census, the City's population in 1940 was 12,674 -- 98.4% American, while in 1930 it was 9,194. The increase in the ten year period amounting to 38 per cent. The present City Directory population is 17,475.

POST OFFICE RECEIPTS in 1930 totaled $39,000.00; in 1940, $62,- 529.00; and in 1947, $101,741.79.

THE GOVERNMENT is vested in a Mayor and nine Aldermen who are progressively administering the affairs of the City to provide the necessary facilities required for its rapid growth.

CLIMATE: Mild, equitable, and free from severe storms. The aver- age mean annual temperature is 62 degrees and the average annual rain- fall is 45 inches. Growing season 207 days.
