Henderson, North Carolina
Population Greater Henderson 16,410
Altitude 509
Henderson, North Carolina, is situated on U. S. Highway No. 1, 42 miles north of Raleigh, the state capitol and 115 miles south of Richmond, Virginia. The altitude of Henderson is a comfortable mean between lower plains and the hilly and mountainous regions of Western North Carolina. Cool summer nights and moderate winters make for a pleas- ant climate and a healthful place in which to live.
Henderson is served by bus from points north, south, east and west, over highways U. S. No. 1, 158 and State Highway 39. Rail transporta- tion is furnished by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company direct from New York to Miami and by a branch of the Southern Railway. Truck transportation is furnished by nationally known fleets.
The City has lovely residential sections, stately churches, excellent schools, a beautiful park and splendid manufacturing sites.
EXCELLENT SCHOOLS
Educational needs of the children of Henderson are excellently provided for by a modern system of well-financed and expertly directed public schools housed in attractive structures for both the white and negro population. There are three roomy, well-lighted grade school buildings, a junior high school building, and a beautiful new senior high school building for white children. There are separate grade and high schools for negro students. The senior high school is of modern Gothic design, typical of advanced Southern architecture for modern school buildings. There are three recognized kindergarten schools for pre- school children, a business college, a negro junior college, and other educational facilities maintained in and near the city. Wake Forest College, N. C. State College, Duke University, Meredith College, Peace Junior College and Saint Mary's College are located within a radius of 40 miles of Henderson.
INDUSTRY

The huge Carolina Bagging Company, the world's largest jute pro- ducts manufacturer, operates two plants in Henderson which cover more than 25 acres of ground. The Corbitt Company manufactures the famous Corbitt heavy duty trucks, truck-tractors and trailors, units which won wide acclaim during the recent world war. Trucks manufactured by this concern were responsible for the company's being awarded the Army-Navy "E" award for excellency of product and production.
Henderson and Vance county is also becoming recognized as a mining center for this section of the state. The Tungsten Mining Corpor- ation maintains the largest tungsten mining operation on the continent. More than 600,000 tons of crushed granite are shipped from the county annually from huge quarries.
ROSE'S 5-10-25c STORES
Headquarters of ROSE'S 5-10-25c STORES, which is the largest chain of variety stores operated exclusively in the South, are located in Henderson. This organization now operating 132 stores in five southern states, was founded in Henderson in 1915.
AGRICULTURE
Henderson and Vance county are the center of a wide area of the finest agricultural lands in North Carolina. Tobacco and cotton are the principal cash crops, with progressive programs carried out annually to stimulate the growth of feed for livestock and dairy producers. About 12,000 acres of tobacco are planted annually, and about 4,800 acres of cotton.
, Henderson's huge auction tobacco market, from which emanates the chant of the famous tobacco auctioneer, annually sells approximately 30,000,000 pounds of flue-cured, or cigarette-type tobacco. The market is served by seven warehouses, covering more than half a million square feet of floor space, and operates two complete sets of buyers represent- ing all domestic and foreign company buyers of this type of tobacco. There are seven major buying companies located in Henderson. As much as $15,000,000 has been paid to growers of tobacco during a single season. Vance County is located in the center of the Bright Leaf Tobacco Belt. Tours of the Tobacco Auctions conducted by Chamber of Com- merce in cooperation with Tobacco Board of Trade free of charge.
Approximately 32 per cent of all land in Vance County is devoted to agriculture. Divided among the remainder of land is industry, residen- tial properties, sub-divisions and forestation.
