PREFACE
PREFACE HENDERSON, N. C.
Population Greater Henderson 18,500
Altitude 509
-
As North Carolina's most northern city on U. S. Highway No. 1, Henderson is truly the "Gateway to the South." The 18,500 people of Henderson are proud of their southern heritage, and the history that surrounds them. Our southern architecture stands in beauty beside the modern styling of our newer buildings. Suburban comfort with metro- politan conveniences offer excellent living and working conditions.
LOCATION
Henderson is 115 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, and 42 miles north of Raleigh, the state capital. The Atlantic Ocean is only a 4 hour drive, and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains are only 5 hours away. A moderate climate avoids extremes, and gives many wonderful days for outdoor living. December is the coldest month with an average temperature of 42 degrees, and August, the hottest month, averages 76.8 degrees. Although snowfall is light and does not interfere with business, there is usually enough for sledding and other winter sports. The altitude of Henderson is a comfortable average between the lower plains of Eastern North Carolina and the mountainous regions of West- ern North Carolina. Cool summer nights and moderate winters give a pleasant climate for healthful living conditions.
Lovely homes on tree lined streets give Henderson some of the most beautiful neighborhoods found anywhere. Although most of the 700 homes built in the past 5 years are more modernistic in design, many older colonial homes create an architectural picture found only in southern communities. Pleasant surroundings are a big reason our people point to Henderson with pride as being "home."
RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES
The lives of all are deeply enriched by over 40 churches in Hen- derson. These houses of worship represent eleven denominations. Their beauty makes church going a pleasure, and they are well equipped to handle all phases of religious activities.
SCHOOLS
The education of our children is adequately handled by two high schools, one junior high school, and eight elementary schools. More than $2,000,000 has been spent in the past several years to enlarge and modernize the city system. Forty percent of the graduates attend an institute of higher learning from our well staffed schools. One business school and a junior college are in Vance County, and within 50 miles of Henderson are located 16 colleges and universities.

PREFACE
AGRICULTURE
Tobacco is still the major crop in Vance County, but our agricul- tural economy is branching out into new fields. Dairy farming and beef cattle, as well as vegetable crops, are raising the economic standards of the community. Food and feed processing plants have opened new markets. Seven tobacco warehouses make Henderson one of the lead- ing markets for bright leaf tobacco in the world. In 1958, the first Aromatic (or Turkish) tobacco market in Eastern North Carolina was held in Henderson. The visitor is invited to watch the tobacco auctions from September thru November, and arrangements can be made at the Chamber of Commerce office.
INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL
New industries continue to diversify the income of Henderson. We have textiles, automotive supplies, food processors, mining, knitting, fertilizer, concrete, tobacco, and furniture in our community. Our ex- panding industrial economy now gives employment to over 4500 persons. Over 300 business establishments serve a trade area of 150,000 people. We have three strong banks and two building and loan asso- ciations with combined resources of over $20,000,000.
GOVERNMENT
The City of Henderson has a Mayor-Council form of government with eight city councilmen and the mayor serving two year terms. The mayor is the executive head of the government. Despite the fact that the City of Henderson has spent more than $3,000,000 in the past ten years in capital outlay to improve service to the citizens, the tax rate has remained stable at a very low figure.
SERVICES
Two hospitals, a new health center, and several nursing homes pro- vide over 150 beds to serve the needs of our community. Well trained doctors and nurses give excellent medical care to the people of Hen- derson. The H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library serves as a tribute to the cultural advancement in Henderson. This stately structure houses over 20,000 volumes. Supported by local as well as state and federal gov- ernments, its continued growth is evident. The Vance County Rescue Squad stands ready to serve our people in case of any emergency.
TRANSPORTATION
Henderson is second to none in transportation facilities. U. S. High- way No. 1, U. S. Highway 158, and several state highways are lending to the advantages of Henderson and leading to its advancement. It is served by the main line of the Seaboard Airline Railway, and a branch line of the Southern Railway System. The Atlantic Greyhound Bus Corporation operates 36 buses through Henderson daily. An airport suitable for private or executive type planes is available. The Raleigh- Durham Airport, with regular scheduled airlines to all points in the country, is only a 50 minute drive from Henderson. Industrial and com- merical houses are served daily by 13 motor freight carriers.
