Preface

Hickory was first chartered as a town in 1870. This charter was amended in 1879, and March, 1913, the citizens by a large majority adopted what is known as the City Manager form of government, being the first city in North Carolina and one of the first in the United States to adopt this plan.

LOCATION

Hickory is situated in the central section of North Carolina on the Asheville Division of the Southern Railway, 80 miles east of Asheville and 54 miles northwest of Charlotte. It is in the heart of what is termed the Piedmont Section of the State, situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city is protected from extreme temperature in Winter and Summer by these peaks that rise thousands of feet in height. To the north, west and south extend the Blue Ridge range. Hickory enjoys a year-round climate that is unexcelled anywhere, free from the rigors of northern winters and the extreme heat of the summers farther south. It is also protected from the storms of the middle western plains. This section offers to those seeking a change of location an ideal, evenly balanced winter and summer climate. The average, annual temperature for the past ten years has been 60.2 degrees, with a record of more than 300 days of sunshine each year. The summer nights are cooled by the mountain breezes, the temperature frequently ranging 20 degrees lower than that of mid-day.

the United States Government for the reception of foreign students. Lenoir Rhyne College is officially registered as a standard college by the Department of Public Instruction of the states of North Carolina, New York and Pennsylvania and other states to which application for such registration has been made. The present enrollment of Lenoir Rhyne College is 773. In the near future Lenoir Rhyne will go forward with a building program already blue printed calling for an expenditure of approximately $600,000.00.

The Evans College of Commerce now gives day and night courses to an average of 130 students.

WORTH ELLIOTT CARNEGIE LIBRARY

Founded in 1932, the Worth Elliott Carnegie Library has grown from the small beginning of 1,820 volumes to one of the best libraries in the State of North Carolina.

It now has a book collection of 23,652 volumes, a circulation of 111,920. The Library consists of the Main Library and the Twelfth Street Branch for colored citizens.

The growth of the library has been so striking that the present plant has become inadequate and plans have been completed to erect modern libraries for both white and colored citizens.

CEMETERIES

Municipally owned and maintained cemeteries are Oakwood, Houck's Chapel, Highland and Ridgewood (colored) cemeteries. The Highland cemetery, consisting of 30 acres, was recently designed and developed. Each of the above named cemeteries were carefully plan- ned, beautifully designed and offer adequate burial grounds.

AIRPORT

In 1938 construction was begun on the present Hickory Municipal Airport. This airport is recognized today as one of the leading airports of North Carolina. It provides landing facilities for the largest aircraft. It is a regular stop on the Knoxville to Norfolk route of the Pennsylvania Central Airlines and the Charlotte to Chicago route of the Twentieth Century Airlines. Every effort is being made to secure stops by North- eastern Airlines.

The field was used extensively as an air training center by the Navy until July, 1944, thereby making a valued contribution to the war effort.

The airport is conveniently located, being 2.5 miles northwest of the center of Hickory. The following represents an outlined description of the airport and its major characteristics:

Investment-$1,000,000.00.

Area-147.7 acres.

Hanger-100 by 125 feet.

Administration building-one.

Repair shop-40 by 60 feet.

12

PREFACE

The airport has adequate lighting facilities. The CAA, for the guid- ance of aircraft, has installed a Radio Range Station in Hickory.

POWER

The Hickory area is in the center of the great hydroelectric develop- ment of the Duke Power Company whose chain of power sites along the Catawba River-which forms the northern and eastern boundaries of Catawba County-has made this stream the Niagara of the South.

Hickory is also the headquarters of the Piedmont Gas Company, serving this area.

TRANSPORTATION

Hickory is located on the Asheville division of the Southern Railway and is headquarters of the Carolina & Northwestern Railway. Operated jointly, these two lines provide fast, economical east-west, north-south freight and passenger connections and Pullman service to such points as New York and Chicago. On a 24-hour average Hickory is served by one freight or passenger train for every 36 minutes.

Twelve motor express companies provide quick, dependable through freight and pick-up service. The Queen City Coach Company operates scores of busses daily. Local transportation is provided by the City Bus Lines, which serves the city and suburban areas with scheduled service, and 85 taxicabs.

13

PREFACE

RAW MATERIALS AND WATER SUPPLY

Over 18 million acres of forest lands, a $45,000,000 horticultural crop annually, great plant cellulose resources and 30 minerals with commer- cial possibilities are found in North Carolina.

Hickory draws its water supply from the 22-mile-long Lake Hickory on Catawba River and thus has access to an unlimited source of high grade water.

Water purification facilities in Hickory now have a capacity of 4,000,000 gallons per day.

LABOR SUPPLY

Adaptability of the native-born intelligent population here has been conclusively demonstrated by the remarkable industrial development in the past two decades. Years of manufacturing in the Hickory area has resulted in an accumulation of skilled workers, particularly in hosiery, cotton-textiles and wood-working industries.

MARKETS

Located in a low-living-cost, low-production-cost region, within strik- ing distance of the main harbors of the Atlantic and Gulf, Hickory is within 500 miles of 55 per cent of the total population of the United States. Proximity to the nation's largest consuming markets has been a vital factor in the industrial growth of the Piedmont.

LEGISLATION

North Carolina has long been aware of the economic importance of amicable relations between government and business, and between capital and labor. Its tax trend is downward because the state has passed the peak of expenditures for its services and facilities. There is no state tax on real property.

14

PREFACE

TRADE AND COMMERCE

The 1940 census shows a population of 138,454 within a twenty mile radius of the business district of Hickory. Approximately 85% of this population is native white, thus offering an unusually attractive oppor- tunity for the retail and wholesale merchants. This population also offers an attractive labor market for industry.

INDUSTRIES

Hickory is the hub of an important industrial area in the Western Piedmont section of North Carolina. Located in Hickory are 190 indus- trial plants, widely diversified as to products. Ninety percent of the capital invested in these plants is furnished by Hickory investors. Among the products manufactured are dining room, bedroom and parlor furni- ture and various occasional pieces, church and theater furniture, juvenile and kindergarten furniture, wooden boxes, brass, bronze and iron cast- ings, building materials, creamery products, cotton mill supplies, farm wagons, harness and leather goods, interior mill work, overalls and work shirts, paper boxes and cartons, pumps, sash cord, shoe strings, pottery, tapestries, flour and feed, blinds, chemicals, mattresses, textile product, etc.

Besides these many diversified products, there are 40 hosiery and knitting mills, furnishing employment to several thousand employees.

Hickory is the largest cordage manufacturing center in the world.

CONCLUSION

Hickory became known as "North Carolina's Best Balanced and Fastest Growing City" following a survey of the Atlantic Coast states made a short while ago by the largest eastern transportation company when the head of that company declared Hickory to be the Best Bal- anced City in America. Whether or not Hickory is the Best Balanced City in America, everyone familiar with its diversified, industrial and agricultural development, its geographic location, its climate, and the outstanding and unselfish community spirit of its people, is agreed that it is an ideal place in which to live.

Hickory is a city of home owners, 75% of the inhabitants owning their own property.

The citizens are church-going people and almost every denomination in the South is represented here.

The most recent example of the spirit of her people has been pub- licized throughout the nation-that of converting a small summertime health camp designed for a few underprivileged boys and girls of the county, into an emergency hospital to care for the victims of infantile paralysis. Although only six victims of polio came from within the corporate limits of Hickory, these people, through their initiative and resourcefulness, built and to a large extent, managed a hospital caring for more than 450 polio victims coming from every section of the state of North Carolina.

Hickory has a very active retail Merchants Association, Community Chest and Chamber of Commerce.
