PREFACE
MARION, McDowell County, North Carolina
PREFACE
Marion, North Carolina, population (township) 12,538, elevation 1450 feet, the county seat of McDowell County, has been widely publicized as the "lake city of the mountains," which distinction is but a just claim. Even more significant, however, is its relation to the mountains rather than its accessibility to the mirrored lakes within easy reach.
"The front door to the Blue Ridge" is the impression of the tourists who pause to recount the scenic aspects of this locality. Marion is situated in the beautiful Catawba river valley, adjacent to the head waters of Lake James with 152 miles shoreline, largest artificial lake producing power in North Carolina. A few miles distant is the pic- turesque Lake Tahoma, "in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell." Other towering mountain peaks spread shadows over the country side to the West and north while South mountains and the foot hills almost encompass the city in the opposite direction.
Without question, there is no town in the country which can rightly boast of so great a panorama of scenic interest within a radius covered by an afternoon's leisurely drive. The famed Linville Falls and gorge, the Little Switzerland area, the Linville caverns, the grandure of Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock and Hawk's Bill are all less than an hour distant over the network of hard surfaced roads.
Much of the best scenery to be found anywhere in Eastern America can be covered by easy stage, over the many tours radiating out of the town of Marion.
Mention is made of one tour of unmatched beauty which takes you past Lake Tahoma and up the winding trail along the borders of Buck Creek. Stop at Buck Creek falls and imbibe the serene beauty of the crystal clear, sparkling water pouring over massive rocks. And look back into geological ages past and note the sculpture and carvings which nature has created by the incessent current cutting its way through foot after foot of solid stone. On the edges of the turbulent stream, where the spray rises in sparkling beauty, can be seen minature rainbows dancing in the sunlight.
But we can not linger here. Up the road are other sights of more than passing interest. The road itself is a masterpiece of engineering as it ascends more than two thousand feet at an almost even grade, so uniform that it is barely noticeable until one reaches almost the crest of the mountain.

PREFACE
Then Buck Creek Gap, where the state highway intercepts the Blue Ridge Parkway, a forty million dollar project which is now nearing com- pletion by the Federal government for the sole convenience of the tour- ists of the nation. At the gap one pauses in admiration of the grandure as he gazes upon the broad expanse of Mt. Mitchell, only a few miles away, rising more than a mile, almost sheer, from its base.
A few miles further on one may turn to the left from the paved road and cross the mountains over a newly constructed, all weather road, paralleling the outline of Mt. Mitchell for many miles, passing through the Mt. Mitchell game preserve and the state fish hatchery, and even- tually re-enter U. S. Highway No. 70 a few miles west of the point of departure.
But Marion and vicinity is not merely a haven for tourists and pleasure-seekers. It possesses an appreciable share of industry, and abundant fertile bottom lands for those who would till the soil. The agricultural products of the county consist largely of hay, corn, rye, oats, Irish and sweet potatoes, and wheat; which have a yearly value to the farmers of more than half a million dollars. To this one may add the dairying and poultry business which bring in $60,000.00 annually. One apple orchard comprises 20,000 trees and many smaller orchards flourish in the thermal atmosphere which almost guarantees success in the horti- cultural field.
Industries located in, and adjacent to, the town of Marion comprise furniture manufacturing, hosiery and textiles. There are two furniture factories employing approximately 700 men. Shipments from each of these reach near the million mark every year and go into all parts of the nation. There are seven hosiery mills, employing approximately 700 workers, with a capacity output of over 25,000 dozen pairs of sox weekly. There are two print cloth mills and one yarn mill, with 125,000 spindles, employing 1500 hands and consuming 2000 bales of cotton per week.
These industries are supplied with native labor and provide a pay- roll of approximately $40,000.00 per week.
To one looking for a place to live or to begin business, Marion and vicinity offers countless opportunities. There are still tremendous vol- umes of unused water power, thousands of acres of pasture lands and tillable soil, innumerable sites for the orchardist, and mountainsides of pulpwood.
For the industrialist, the community offers excellent manufacturing sites, accessibility to raw materials, the highest type of native labor, and unsurpassed transportation facilities via the Southern Railway System, Asheville-Salisbury Division; Marion-Rockhill Division branch line of Southern Railway; Elkhorn Spartanburg Division Clinchfield Railroad lines, and various motor lines.
The success and happiness of the inhabitants of this vicinity can be
