PREFACE

County and surrounding area with a fine network of highways leading to and from the city. Bus lines, truck lines and railroads radiate in every direction from Marion, connecting it with principal cities of North Carolina and the entire country.

Marion Senior High School

SCHOOLS

The city's Senior High School is housed in a new $1,000.000 plant. Marion also has one Junior High School, six elementary schools and one colored union school, enrolling students in grades one through twelve.

POPULATION

Marion has a population of 2,889 (1950 Census). Federal census figures do not give an accurate picture of the Greater Marion area because the city has limits of less than one mile radius and a number of large industrial plants and many homes are located outside the area within 31/2 miles of the city's radial point. Greater Marion has a popu- lation of approximately 12,500 estimated in 1958. The McDowell Cham- ber of Commerce estimates 28,000 people in McDowell County in 1958.

RAILROADS

The Southern Railway System and Clinchfield Railway Company are the two main line railroads serving Marion, with connections to all points.

HIGHWAYS

Marion is located on U. S. Highway 70 east and west, on U. S. High- way 221 north and south and North Carolina State Highways 26, 126, 9 and 80. In the Highway System of North Carolina, Marion is the gateway from east to west. It is the hub to the system in the mountain sections.

BUS SERVICE

Three bus lines operate through the city on many schedules each day. A bus terminal is provided for these operations. They are - At-

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Lake James, one of the largest lakes in North Carolina, is located four miles east of Marion. This lake has 154 miles of shore line and attracts fishermen and water sportsmen from many states. Lake James affords swimming, fishing, water skiing and boating.

The City of Marion has a new 30 acre Recreation Park under con- struction at the present time which will include tennis courts, picnic areas, swimming pool and a children's playground.

The fabulous Blue Ridge Parkway skirts McDowell County on the north and is only a 30-minute drive from Marion. The Parkway is miles of mountain-top driving with no billboards or commercial travel. It maintains parking overlooks, picnic areas and comfort stations along the route and is easily accessible from Marion via U. S. 221, 70 and N. C. Highways 26, 26A and 80.

CLIMATE

Marion has ideal weather which prevails year 'round. The Sum- mers are long and warm but not attended by oppressive sultry periods. The Winters are short and mild. The average temperautre is 59.9 degrees. The average July temperature is 76.1 degrees.

HOTELS

Marion has two hotels. There are also seven motels and tourist courts in or near the city.

10

PREFACE

NEWSPAPERS

Marion's semi-weekly newspaper, The McDowell News, published on Monday and Thursday, carries full coverage of local and county news. It enjoys a wide circulation throughout the county and sur- rounding area.

LAKE JAMES

Water sports are not limited to Cypress Gardens in Florida. Local Marion citizens and visitors enjoy Lake James practically year 'round, and to most residents fishing is second nature in this beautiful mountain lake.

HOSPITAL

Marion has a 60-bed hospital which was completed in 1952 at a cost of $700,000 and is one of the most modern units of its size in the United States. A 35-bed Nurses Home was completed in 1953 at a cost of $100,000.

CHURCHES

There are 21 churches in the Greater Marion area representing nine denominations including the Catholic faith.

MOTOR FREIGHT LINES

Marion has three common carriers with terminals for pick up and discharge of local and long distance freight. They are - Fredrickson Motor Express Corporation, Johnson Motor Lines, Inc. and Overnite Transportation Company. Irregular carriers from over the country serve Marion and McDowell County.

AIR TRANSPORTATION

Marion has airport facilities to accommodate private planes, with a 3,600 feet grass runway which is used year 'round. It has one 60 x 60 hangar, and gas and oil are available on request. Regular air line service is available in Asheville and Hickory, 40 miles west and east respectively with a total of 20 flights daily.

RADIO

There is one radio station serving Marion, WBRM, 1000 watts, 1250 kilocycles, and is an independent station.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Marion has a Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Civitan Club, Lions Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Woman's Club, Parent-Teacher Associa- tion, various fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, a number of garden clubs and charity leagues.

HISTORY

Marion was founded in 1843 and was named in honor of General Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" of South Carolina, whose name and fame have been immortalized in song and story.

ELECTRIC POWER

Electrical power is distributed in the city and county by Duke Power Company with a plentiful supply available in this area at all times. Duke has an installed capacity as follows: Hydro-497,273 kilowatts, Steam- 2,235,000 kilowatts.

11

PREFACE

WATER

The City obtains its water supply from two water sheds located in the Pisgah National Forest, which is pure at its source and does not require any treatment with the exception of chlorination. These two sheds provide daily capacity of 1,500,000 gallons, and average daily consumption is 1,250,000 gallons. It is entirely a gravity system with adequate pressure to every point both inside and outside the city.

Marion has recently completed construction of one of the most modern filtration plants in the state which is operated from a separate water shed with a capacity of 2,000,000 gallons per day and is used as a supplement to the gravity system.

INDUSTRIES

The major industries in Marion at the present time are as follows: a cotton thread finishing plant, several large textile plants, a paper box plant, two large furniture plants, a number of hosiery mills, a bottling plant and several lumber mills.

Employer-employee relations in Marion and McDowell County are second to none in the United States. An excellent highway system permits easy access to labor coming from nearby towns.
