60-bed auxiliary, provides adequate medical and surgical facilities for Union County's 45,000 people. Centrally located, a full-time health center, maintained by the county, operates in full co-operation with state and national health services to protect the public well-being.

AGRICULTURE

Union County is one of the leading agricultural counties in North Carolina. Aggressive hard working thrifty people with a pride of ownership bought their own farms and homes and have developed over the years a diversified type of agriculture with a combination of livestock and crop enterprises. There are over 4500 such farms in Union County with attractive, well kept homes.

FISCAL STRUCTURE AND TAXES

The total value of all properties in Union County exceeds $150,000,000. These properties are assessed for taxation at $75,000,000. General bonded indebtedness is only $23,000 - school bond issue for five new high schools $2,400,000.

TAXES

Taxes are reasonable. Union county has one of the lowest tax dollars of any county in North Carolina.

EDUCATION

Wingate College, 5 miles east of Monroe, today is well known and respected in this state and other states.

FUEL OIL AND NATURAL GAS

Ample supplies of heating oils as provided by all the major Ameri- can oil companies are available, delivered directly to the user, at com- petitive prices.

Natural gas is available through the city of Monroe and delivered through an underground pipeline by North Carolina Natural Gas Corp.

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

Union County enjoys the facilities of four modern banks and two buildings and loan associations with total resources of $64,505,544.68. They have correspondents in large cities affording commercial banking facilities for any normal needs.

WATER

Monroe is particularly fortunate in having adequate supply of water. The City operates its own municipal water system, the source being Lake Lee and Lake Monroe.
