"CITY OF PROGRESS"
UNION COUNTY
Union County with an average altitude of 600 feet, lies in the south- ern section of North Carolina. Monroe, the county seat, in the center of the county, is just 23 miles southeast of Charlotte, connected by a smart new four-lane highway. Union County is in the heart of the famous Variety Vacationland - the scenic Appalachian Mountains to the northwest and the Atlantic coast and its many popular beaches to the east. A happy holiday is just a pleasant driving distance for all.
POPULATION
The population of Monroe is 12,500, Union County, 45,350. Monroe is rapidly becoming better known in North Carolina as a city of progress.
LABOR
Labor, both white and colored, consists of skilled and unskilled and has a reputation of being dependable satisfactory workers. At present there is no organized labor in the county.
CLIMATE
Monroe enjoys a splendid year-round climate with excellent health conditions. The temperature-Mean 61 degrees, Winter low 18, Summer high 95, Average annual rainfall 46.1, Snowfall, very light.
CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS AND CLUBS
Civic organizations and clubs include Rotary Club, Lions Club, Optimist Club, Monroe-Union County Chamber of Commerce, the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, American Legion, American Legon Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Executive Club, Business and Professional Club, Union County Farm Association Club, Union County Historical Society, Indus- trial Education Association, Monroe Gun Club, Monroe Park and Recrea- tion Commission, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Union County Hospital Auxiliary, Monroe Woman's Club, Junior Woman's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Monroe Music Club, Monroe Garden Club, Little Theatre, Ladies Golf Club, Archery, and Moose Lodge.
RADIO AND TELEVISION
Radio reception is excellent at all points in the county from Monroe Station WMAP, and a large number of stations with national hookups in nearby cities and towns. Television reception is likewise good, over five different channels carrying nation-wide programs.
NEWSPAPERS
Two semi-weekly papers with a combined circulation of twelve thousand give the county a paper each weekday, also the Charlotte morning and afternoon dailies are delivered promptly throughout the county.

RECREATION
The Monroe Parks and Recreation Commission, municipally sup- ported, plans and supervises wholesome recreation for all age groups throughout the year.
SCHOOLS
Local schools are a part of the state-wide uniform system. There are five large consolidated high schools; three union schools, grades 1-12; and eighteen elementary schools in the county and city system. Student enrollment is above 11,000.
TRANSPORTATION
Queen City Trailways operate daily thru-line schedules in new air-conditioned buses to many important cities with connections to points throughout the nation.
Douglas Municipal Airport has 106 scheduled flights and boards more than 1,000 people every day. Five airlines serve the airport. East- ern Air Lines has jet service, Delta Air Lines has direct service from Charlotte to the west coast.
TRUCKING
Fourteen trucking lines give daily service to Union County and more than 100 trucking lines operate through the Monroe-Charlotte area; 40 having headquarters here and in Charlotte, and more than 60 operate terminals. There are 3200 trucks operating in and out of Charlotte every 24 hours. Excepting Chicago, Charlotte is the largest trucking center in the United States.
The main line of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad from New York to Atlanta, Georgia passes through all towns in the county. Excellent freight and passenger services are afforded.
CITY GOVERNMENT
The city is governed by a board of aldermen and a mayor. The four aldermen are elected at large and all are successful businessmen and professional men. Monroe also has a city manager.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Monroe's Fine Police force consists of 1 Chief, 1 Captain, 3 Lieu- tenants, 5 Sergeants, 11 Patrolmen, 1 Meter Maid and 3 School Cross- ing Guards. All police cars are equipped with 2-way radios.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
An efficient sheriff's department consists of the sheriff and four paid deputies. The four county patrol cars are equipped with two-way radios.
CHURCHES
All principal Protestant denominations and the Catholic Faith are represented in the city or county.
HOSPITAL FACILITIES
The beautiful 125-bed Union Memorial Hospital, located in East Monroe and constructed with local, state and federal funds, plus a (Continued on page 10)

60-bed auxiliary, provides adequate medical and surgical facilities for Union County's 45,000 people. Centrally located, a full-time health center, maintained by the county, operates in full co-operation with state and national health services to protect the public well-being.
AGRICULTURE
Union County is one of the leading agricultural counties in North Carolina. Aggressive hard working thrifty people with a pride of ownership bought their own farms and homes and have developed over the years a diversified type of agriculture with a combination of livestock and crop enterprises. There are over 4500 such farms in Union County with attractive, well kept homes.
FISCAL STRUCTURE AND TAXES
The total value of all properties in Union County exceeds $150,000,000. These properties are assessed for taxation at $75,000,000. General bonded indebtedness is only $23,000 - school bond issue for five new high schools $2,400,000.
TAXES
Taxes are reasonable. Union county has one of the lowest tax dollars of any county in North Carolina.
EDUCATION
Wingate College, 5 miles east of Monroe, today is well known and respected in this state and other states.
FUEL OIL AND NATURAL GAS
Ample supplies of heating oils as provided by all the major Ameri- can oil companies are available, delivered directly to the user, at com- petitive prices.
Natural gas is available through the city of Monroe and delivered through an underground pipeline by North Carolina Natural Gas Corp.
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Union County enjoys the facilities of four modern banks and two buildings and loan associations with total resources of $64,505,544.68. They have correspondents in large cities affording commercial banking facilities for any normal needs.
POWER
Monroe buys from Duke Power Company and has its own distri- bution system at the same rate as Duke Power. Union Electric Member- ship Corporation supplies many miles of rural lines.
WATER
Monroe is particularly fortunate in having adequate supply of water. The City operates its own municipal water system, the source being Lake Lee and Lake Monroe. Storage and treatment facilities are far in excess of those found in cities as small as Monroe. Lake Lee-Lake Monroe impound over 700 million gallons of raw water.
