The town of Mooresville was incorporated in the year 1873. The early settlers were Scotch-Irish and Germans, who came to this region about 1750 from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Mooresville, non-partisan businesslike, city government is directed by a Council-Manager form of Government.


LOCATION


Mooresville is situated in the Piedmont Section of North Carolina on the Winston-Salem Division of the Southern Railway, 55 miles south of Winston-Salem and 27 miles north of Charlotte. A western Piedmont County, Iredell lies on a high plateau surrounded by the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mooresville has an elevation of 910 feet above sea level, average rainfall is 46", mean summer temperature is 72 degrees, mean winter temperature is 49 degrees. The summer nights are cooled by the mountain breezes.


POPULATION


United States Census, 1950 gave Mooresville a population of 7,121. The 1958 population of Greater Mooresville is 12,500.

TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH


Telephone service by Mooresville Telephone Company. Dial tele- phone system with 2,875 telephones in service. Telegraph service by Western Union.


CHURCHES


Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopal, Catholic, .A.R.P., Church of God, Wesleyan Methodist and Tabernacle. Total of 19 Churches.


SCHOOLS


Mooresville has a nine months school term and twelve grades with two elementary schools, a Junior High School and High School for white pupils and one colored school with grades from 1 through 12. Davidson College, one of the best known of the Southern Colleges, is located only seven miles from Mooresville.


UTILITIES


Power facilities to customers is furnished by Duke Power Company. Byers Creek furnishes excellent water facilities for the city. Present water consumption 600,000 gallons per day with a capacity of 1,500,000 gallons per day. Natural gas for cooking, heating and industrial uses, furnished by Public Service Company of N. C.


RECREATION


The Mooresville Recreation Department has trained personnel to supervise their program.


Recreation is for all age groups. Every person should spend part of his leisure time in doing instead of watching.


Recreation for all age groups has been made possible in Moores- ville through such programs as Softball, Midget Baseball, Fumble League, Junior Baseball, Volley Ball, Tennis, Croquet, Horse Shoes, Clubs for Teen-Agers, Young Adult Groups, Ping Pong, and all kinds of table games.


The Senior Citizens have a very active club meeting every Wed- nesday from 10 A. M. to 2 P. M. Anyone over 50 years of age is eligible.


Some of the special activities are: Family Night, Christmas Parties, Hay Rides, Weiner Roasts, Tournaments, Back to School Dance, Easter Dance, Pet Show, Doll Show, and Dancing Classes.


The swimming pool is open during the summer season, with swim- ming classes held regularly.


The Recreation Department assists civic clubs, churches and others in working up parties.


The program is for Negroes and Whites.


Mooresville Recreation Commission's slogan is "A Community that plays together is a much better community in which to live."

The 1959 population of Greater Mooresville is 11,948, based on the number of individuals found by actual canvass at each residence. Ter- ritory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.

Mooresville's new Municipal Building is located at 413 North Main Street. It includes facilities for the Police Department, Court, Jail, Fire Station, Fire Department Dormitory, General Offices, Water Department, Water Shop, Highway Patrol, City Manager, American Red Cross, Board of Health and Welfare and Veteran's Service Office, (County) and The Mooresville Chamber of Commerce. There is short time parking facili- ties near the front of the building, longer parking at the side for persons using the building and a large parking lot at the rear of the building.


HOSPITAL


Located in the heart of Mooresville and administering not only to the residents but also to the surrounding area is the 125 bed Lowrance Hospital. Adjacent to the Hospital is the Nurses Home for students in the School of Nursing.


LIBRARY


The Mooresville Public Library contains 14,000 volumes. CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS


Mooresville has a great variety of civic and fraternal organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Retail Merchants Association, Woman's Club, Junior Civic League, Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist, Garden Club, Pythians, Odd Fellows, B.P.O.E., W.O.W., Masons, Eastern Star, Rebecca's, American Legion and Aux- iliary, V.F.W. and Auxiliary, all assisting in building a greater and better Mooresville.


AGRICULTURE


Mooresville is located in the heart of a rich farming section. Among the major crops are cotton, corn, wheat, truck farming and dairying. NATIONAL GUARD


Mooresville is the home of "B" Battery of the 449th Field Artillery Battalion.


TRANSPORTATION


Mooresville is located on the Winston-Salem division of the South- em Railway. 17 motor express companies provide quick, dependable through freight and pick-up service. Mooresville is served by Grey- hound Bus Company daily. A privately owned city bus system pro- vides rural and urban transportation.


INDUSTRY


An excellent climate, convenience of raw materials, and accessi- bility to markets, plus an abundance of power, water, space and native labor- have all contributed to the industrial development of Moores- ville and this area. Mooresville Industries employ over 4,500 people with an annual payroll of over ten million dollars.


CHAMBER OF COMMERCE


An organization designed to promote the interests of the Moores- ville area seeks first to safeguard present opportunities and assets, but is ever on the alert to attract new industries which will complement those now here.
