Preface

MOUNT AIRY, N. C. SURRY COUNTY

A beautiful little city in the valley of the foot hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Surry County, seventy miles west of Greensboro and forty miles northwest of Winston-Salem, located at the terminus of the Atlantic and Yad- kin Railway, and on two State and National Highways, the latter on the most direct route from the North through the Valley of Virginia and Roanoke South. Has an ideal climate during the entire year, free from mosquitoes, malaria, etc., with White Sulphur Springs five miles north of the city, a very popular resort.

Is the center of a trade territory thirty to forty miles in radius; handling poultry and produce, last season shipping more than $200,000.00 worth o poultry alone. In addition to the splendid market for fruits generally. there are six large commercial orchards with more than 1,000 acres in apples and peaches that last year produced 120,000 bushels of apples and 12,000 bushels of peaches. There are three large leaf tobacco warehouses that sold 5,000,000 pounds of tobacco last season.

Within a mile of the city is the largest open surface Granite Quarry in the world and one of the largest Quarries of any class In the United States. From here was prepared the stone for the construction of the Gettysburg mon- ument; Delaware River bridge, Philadelphia, and many other buildings and structures all over the United States. This quarry is now working on a $1,- 700,000.00 contract for stone to be used in the Arlington Memorial Bridge at Washington, D. C., by the Federal Government.

The town has a conservatively estimated population within the corporate limits of 7,500, with a suburban population of approximately 5,000. There are three substantial banking institutions here with resources totaling more than $4,000,000.00. There are six large furniture factories whose total output is val- ued at $6,500,000.00. They are plants all making high grade furniture and em- ploying skilled labor at most reasonable wages. Two thriving Building and Loan Associations with resources of a million dollars. There are veneer, mirror, hos- iery and underwear factories and three smaller lumber and furniture concerns.

The ten leading industrial plants of the city in 1927 employed more than 2,500 employees and paid them $2,246,000.00. All industries have run full time for years past and are making money. The Post Office receipts for the past year were in excess of $29,000.00.

ADVERTISERS' SPECIAL DIRECTORY

(Continued from page 7)

There are eight blocks of business houses, all of improved brick, granite or fireproof construction. Four wholesale houses and brokerage concerns which last year sold a total of $1,129,760.00; the retail stores compare most favorably witlı those in cities three and four times as large, in selection and character of goods handled. There are three modern school buildings representing an investment of $219,766.18 and more than 50 teachers employed, with 1800 pupils enrolled.

There are eleven churches with buildings costing approximately $650,000.00. The city has eleven miles of paved streets, 25 miles of paved sidewalks. An unlimited supply of cheap hydro-electric power is furnished by the Southern Power Company. A thoroughly modern and adequate water and sewer depart -. ment is owned by the city and two motorized LaFrance fire trucks lend their protection. There are two weekly newspapers with combined circulation of 4500 .copies.

The back country and suburbs teem with an unlimited supply of unskilled Anglo Saxon labor-which is easily trained and content to work for reasonable. wages. There is not the vestige of a Labor Union in the County and no pros- pects of such for years to come. The people are law-abiding, home-loving and. Godfearing.
