PREFACE

PREFACE Mt. Airy, North Carolina "THE FRIENDLY CITY"

Mount Airy, a beautiful city in the valley of the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the home of the largest open face granite quarry in the world. The city's present population, including a recent annexed area, is (Directory count 11,105).

Mount Airy is the center of a trade territory of fifty to sixty miles in radius, handling poultry and produce and being a shopping center for farmers as well as industrial workers.

The principal scenic attraction in the vicinity of Mount Airy is the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, an elongated park with a scenic motorway designed expressly for the tourist. It is reached by U. S. Highway 5_, North.

INDUSTRIES

Mount Airy is rapidly becoming better known in North Carolina as a city of industries. There are four large furniture factories that make high grade furniture and employing skilled labor at reasonable wages. In recent years the city has been overcome with new textile industries which have improved the labor situation considerably.

TOBACCO WAREHOUSES

There are five large tobacco warehouses in Mount Airy, the market selling over twelve million pounds of tobacco in 1948. The market is considered the largest in the world with one set of tobacco buyers. The tobacco houses are well lighted. The market is steadily growing and the cooperation of the merchants in a publicity campaign has become an annual affair each fall.

CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS AND CLUBS

Civic organizations and clubs include Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Merchants . Association, Junior Woman's Club, Golf and Country Club, American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

CLIMATE

Mount Airy enjoys a climate in both summer and winter that is far more moderate than is found in most parts of the Eastern United States. Its summers are remarkably temperate, there is a lack of humidity and an almost complete freedom of mosquitoes. It enjoys an average rain- fall which is distributed, generally, throughout the year.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Adequate facilities are furnished tourists and the traveling public by two excellent hotels and a large number of tourist homes.

SCHOOLS

The city is proud of its school system, having three grammar grades, a high school and a separate school for colored. A $600,000 super high school has been finished recently.

Mount Airy is often called "The Friendly City." It is a law-abiding, home-loving and God-fearing town which is known for its Southern hospitality.

"Let us welcome you here."
