PREFACE

PREFACE Mt. Airy, North Carolina "THE FRIENDLY CITY"

Mount Airy, a beautiful city in the valley of the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the home of the largest open face granite quarry in the world. The city's present population, including a recent annexed area, is in the vicinity of 10,000. Mount Airy is the center of a trade territory of 50 to 60 miles in radius, handling poultry and produce and being a shopping center for farmers, as well as industrial workers. The principal scenic attraction in the vicinity of Mount Airy is the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, an elongaed park with a scenic motorway designed expressly for the tourists. It is reached by U. S. Highway 52 North and State Highway 89 North.

INDUSTRIES

Mount Airy is rapidly becoming a better known City in North Caro- lina for its industrial strength. There are four large furniture factories that make high quality furniture employing skilled labor at reasonable wages. In recent years the City has been privileged to welcome several textile industries which have added potency to the Mount Airy economy, and they have also added a certain stability to the labor situation. Other industries which have vastly improved the Mount Airy economic situation are Proctor Electric Company, makers of the world's finest toasters, an elastic plant, an industrial plastics manufac- turer, and a mirror manufacturing establishment.

TOBACCO WAREHOUSES

There are five large tobacco warehouses in Mount Airy. The market is considered the largest in the world with one set of tobacco buyers. The tobacco houses are well lighted. Market is steadily growing, and the cooperation of the merchants in a publicity campaign has become an annual affair each fall.

CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS

Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Junior Woman's Club, Mount Airy Woman's Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Chamber of Commerce, Mer- chants Association and Credit Associations, Sertoma Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Country Club and two golf courses, American Legion, and Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Auxiliary, Ruritan Clubs and several Garden Clubs.

CLIMATE

Mount Airy enjoys a climate in both summer and winter that is far more moderate than is found in most parts of the Eastern United States. Its summers are remarkably temperate, there is a lack of humidity, and almost complete freedom from mosquitoes. It enjoys an average rainfall which is distributed, generally, throughout the year.
