PREFACE
PREFACE Mt. Airy, North Carolina
"THE GRANITE CITY"
Mount Airy, the Northern Gateway to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, is located thirteen miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This national park attracts more tourists than any other one attraction maintained by the Department of the Interior. This motorway designed for tourists gives beautiful and impressive views of the grandeur and ruggedness of the best known mountain range in the Eastern section of the United States.
Special attractions to be found along the Parkway near Mount Airy include Mabrey's Mill, Doughton Park, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, and Cumberland Knob.
The Parkway can be reached from Mount Airy by U. S. Highway 52 and N. C. Highway 89.
Other scenic attractions within easy driving distance of Mount Airy include Pilot Mountain (12 miles), Hanging Rock State Park (38 miles), and Fairy Stone State Park (50 miles).
CLIMATE
The protection offered by mountains to the north and west give Mount Airy an unusually temperate climate for this section of the coun- try. About 47 inches of rainfall is distributed throughout the year and snowfall is unusually light, thereby it does not interfere with business.
INDUSTRIES
The best known industry is the one that gives the city its name. The world's largest open face granite quarry is located in Mount Airy. This granite has been used in the construction of many structures of national prominence including the Arlington Memorial Park in Wash- ington, D. C .; the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk, N. C .; and the Gold Bullion Depository in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Mount Airy has excellent diversification of industry with 50 manu- facturing firms employing over 6,000 people. The list includes furni- ture plants, hosiery manufacturers, garment factories, electric appliances, mirrors, paper boxes, and concrete products. The majority of these enterprises are "home-owned", and growth within these plants added 142,000 square feet of floor space and over 300 new industrial jobs within the past twelve months.

AGRICULTURE
Diversification is also evident in the agriculture of the area. Tobacco, the leading money crop, is sold at auctions in Mount Airy, and tours may be arranged from September through November by contacting the Chamber of Commerce office. Dairy farms, cattle raising, poultry raising, small grain and truck farming added greatly to the agricultural economy of Mount Airy.
FINANCE
Mount Airy has four financial houses: First National Bank (organ- ized in 1893), The Northwestern Bank (organized in 1910), Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association (organized in 1910), and Mount Airy Savings and Loan Association (organized 1956). Their combined resources are in excess of $36,000,000.
TRANSPORTATION
Excellent transportation facilities are available to Mount Airy. U. S. Highways 52, 601, and several state highways are leading to the advance- ment of our community. The industries and business establishments of this city are served daily by ten motor freight carriers. Rail service is provided by Southern Railway. Mount Airy has an airport adequate for private and executive type planes, which offers charter service to all sections of the country. The Smith Reynolds Airport with regular scheduled flights to all sections of the country is only a fifty minute drive. The Atlantic Greyhound Bus Corporation operates 16 buses daily through this city.
Mount Airy has two newspapers and two radio stations. The Mount Airy News is published twice weekly, and the Mount Airy Times is published weekly. Radio Station WPAQ has a voice of 10,000 watts and Radio Station WSYD transmits 5,000 watts. Television programs emanate from stations at Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte in North Carolina and Roanoke and Lynchburg in Virginia. The Univer- sity of North Carolina-owned TV station, WUNC at Chapel Hill, gives excellent educational programming to our area.
HEALTH FACILITIES
The Northern Hospital of Surry County, a $1,800,000 structure, offers the finest in hospital facilities. Every modern convenience, as well as the most up-to-date technical equipment, is housed in this new structure as an aid to our excellent medical staff. This 100-bed hos- pital includes a training school for nurses with a total enrollment of sixty students. Our community is fortunate to have twelve physicians and two surgeons, accredited by the American Medical Association and the American Society of Surgeons. Other health services include

SCHOOLS
The education of our children is adequately supplied by two high schools, one junior high, and five elementary schools, each fully ac- credited. The Mount Airy High School, considered one of the strong- est in the state, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The quality of teaching provided is evidenced by the fact that 79% of the graduates attend an institution of higher learning or a vocational school. In addition, the Mount Airy Business College and the Mount Airy School of Beauty Culture add to the voca- tional education facilities of the area. There are over 25 colleges and universities within a 65-mile radius of Mount Airy which add to the cultural and educational growth.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Mount Airy is fortunate in having five motels and three hotels with a total room count of 205. Several dining rooms furnish the public with delectable cuisine.
