PREFACE

NEW BERN, N. C.

"A MODERN CITY WITH HISTORIC TRADITIONS" FOUNDED IN 1710 POPULATION GREATER NEW BERN, 17,325

PREFACE

A city of charm and achievement, with undeveloped natural re. sources located in an area of progress and promise. Founded in 1710 by Swiss settlers headed by Baron DeGraffenried, New Bern is located at the confluence of two great rivers, The Neuse and Trent. From this point the early settlers saw a land of promise and settled in great num- bers. You will find traces of French, German, Dutch, and English archi- tecture in the city. Rich in historic buildings, and traditions, New Bern is the second oldest city in North Carolina and can be truly called the "Cradle of North Carolina." It is the historic center of the State.

The steady growth of the city has been due to the wide variety of natural resources which are abundant in this section. Rich in agriculture, forest, and water resources. Industry and agriculture thrive in this area which is blessed with an average mean temperature of 62 degrees. The Gulf Stream is only 75 miles away which enables the community to enjoy warm winters and cool summers. The average winter temperature is 45.4 degrees with an average summer temperature of 79 degrees. 265 days of growing season offers excellent diversified farming activities.

New Bern is the half-way point on the Ocean Hiway which is the his- toric and scenic route between Northern Pines to Southern Palms. Trans- portation facilities include three railroads, trucking companies, excellent bus service to all points, water travel and commerce is available on the rivers and at the Port Terminal 38 miles distant. Air travel is complete with two commercial airlines offering excellent daily schedules.

New Bern is the county seat of Craven County. The city government is of the Council-City Manager type offering the city all modern conven- iences, including municipally owned water and electric service, a city- wide recreation program, excellent fire protection, city and county police force and headquarters of a troop of state highway patrolmen.

Artificial gas is supplied by Tide Water Power Company. The Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company offers modern dial tele- phone service.

New Bern is a well balanced city offering the present and future citizens a wonderful opportunity to prosper and live in a land of plenty. Sports, recreation and climate make New Bern an excellent place in which to live.

For complete information address the Chamber of Commerce, New Bern, North Carolina.
