PREFACE

REIDSVILLE, N. C.

"THE FRIENDLY AND LUCKY CITY" POPULATION GREATER REIDSVILLE, 11,335

Reidsville, the Gate City to the famous Piedmont Section of the Carolinas, and the City Tobacco Built, is centrally located in one of North Carolina's richest agricultural counties; in the middle of the district where the finest cigarette tobacco in the world is grown, and it stands out as an industrial city in a county that is recognized as one of the leaders among all the counties of the Old North State.

HISTORY

Reidsville was named for one of its earlier citizens-one who was born and reared inside of its present corporate limits, and one whose record as a statesman brought fame, not only to his community and state, but to the entire South. This man, David Settle Reid, was in turn Governor of his State, United States Senator, and Ambassador to the Court of Saint James. Reidsville is proud of this honored, pioneer, citizen, but were it possible for him to return and view the progress the little hamlet he knew has made, he doubtless would be proud of his birthplace likewise. Reidsville has grown to a community of well over 10,000-an increase of 52 per cent the last decade.

There are many good things to be said of this thriving industrial city located in the foothills of the Piedmont. Irvin S. Cobb once describ- ed it as "the beautiful dimple in the pink cheek of Piedmont, North Carolina." It is indeed a city of opportunity for those who wish to invest in business or establish manufacturing enterprises-it is a veritable paradise for the home seeker.

MUNICIPAL BUILDING

INDUSTRY AND TOBACCO MARKET

Here in Reidsville will be found the home plant of the American Tobacco Company; a gigantic plant with a maximum daily capacity of over 100,000,000 cigarettes, and employing 3,000 satisfied workers.

PREFACE

Right outside the city limits one will find a great group of storage sheds where over 150,000,000 pounds of the world's choicest tobaccos are aging, awaiting the time when it is ready to be made into Lucky Strike Cigarettes. Also in Reidsville are the offices of the United States Col- lector of Customs where duty is collected on millions of dollars worth of Turkish tobacco, and other imported commodities necessary in the manufacture of Lucky Strike Cigarettes. The amount of duty collected here annually is so great that Reidsville, an inland city, is the third ranking port of entry in North Carolina.

Tobacco means much to Reidsville. Aside from the manufacturers, millions of pounds of this Golden Weed are marketed here annually. For the last four years the sale of leaf tobacco on the Reidsville Tobacco Market has averaged more than 12,000,000 establishing this city as the world's largest one sale tobacco market. During these four years growers were paid over two million dollars approximately each year for the tobacco sold on the floors of Reidsville's large auction ware- houses.

While tobacco is the first industry of this prosperous city, it cannot be said that it reigns supreme. Reidsville is really a city of diversified industries-diversification is what is being sought. Here is located the American Products Company, makers of such well known brands as Nu Shine, nationally known shoe polish and leather preservatives. Here one finds the Edna Cotton Mills, manufacturing cotton textiles; the branch plant of the Chase Bag Company, where millions of cotton bags are produced for granulated tobacco and the packing of auto parts; the Reidsville Throwing Mills-a branch of the Burlington Mills, Inc .- manufacturers of yarns and textile products; the N. C. Hickory Com-

pany, manufacturers of wooden products; and many perhaps smaller but no less important industries.

RETAIL TRADE

Changing from the industrial to the commercial side of Reidsville one will find a shopping district that is truly comparable to much larger cities. They will find an array of modern wholesale and retail stores whose windows are filled with merchandise to meet the demands of

the most exacting.

UTILITIES

Reidsville is fortunate to be served by the hydro-electrical and steam plants of the Duke Power Company. Electric power is to be had in unlimited quantity and at rates lower than the average for the United States. Telephone service is supplied to Reidsville by the Southern Bell Telephone Company-a subsidiary of the American Telephone &

Telegraph Company. Gas, for either domestic or manufacturing pur- poses, is furnished by the North Carolina Gas Corporation.

TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES

To the prospective manufacturer coming to Reidsville it can be said that the city is located on the double tracked main line of the Southern Railway System, thus offering quick transportation to all parts of the United States. It is located on U. S. Highway No. 29, and State High- ways No. 158 and No. 65. Hard surfaced highways lead direct to com- munities east, west, north and south, thus offering inducement to those shipping by truck.

CIVIC AND EDUCATIONAL

Reidsville is a city of well over 10,000 population according to the 1940 U. S. Census. During the last decade the city grew 52 per cent, thus showing the second highest increase in the state. The city oper- ates under the Manager form of government with a City Commission of five members. The city is modern in every respect. Practically every street in the city is hard surfaced, and served with water and sewers. The city has an efficient fire and police departments, and the municipal water system is sufficient to meet the needs of the city for many years to come.

Reidsville has a modern fire-proof hotel with 80 outside rooms and all the facilities of an up-to-date hostelry. Reidsville has a modern fire-proof hospital that has recently been increased to 75 beds that is considered one of the finest equipped and staffed hospitals in the state. Recreation facilities have been provided for the children with the estab- lishment of public playgrounds in each section of the city. City parks are being planned, and on the outskirts of the city is the Hopkins Air-

port. The homeseeker will find that Reidsville is a city of beautiful and well kept homes and gardens. The city possesses a splendid public school system with a modern high school and four fire-proof school buildings. In addition to these five modern buildings there are two public schools and high school for the colored population. The Reidsville school system covers twelve grades and nine months instruction each year.

Reidsville is noted as a city of churches. Eight churches of different denominations for the white people and four colored churches meet the religious needs of the community.

Reidsville supports a public library; it is the headquarters of the Cherokee Council, Boy Scouts of America; it has an active Girl Scout organization and it has an active Community Chest; all of these being located in the handsome Community Center. Reidsville is proud of the Civic Center that is being established; first the splendid Municipal Building with its modern facilities; then next to it was established the new $235,000.00 United States Government Building which, in passing, we may say Reidsville pays for each working day of the year through governmental revenues; then the former Post Office was acquired for a Community Center; lastly there is now being constructed a concrete and steel building to house the fire department. The Pennrose Country Club offers to its members tennis courts, bowling alleys, swimming pool and the finest nine hole golf course to be found in this part of the country. The golf course itself was built under the supervision of Donald Ross- it has its own water plant and system and is not dependent on weather conditions.

Reidsville has an active and progressive Chamber of Commerce, a Merchants Association, Rotary, Kiwanis, various sportsmen's organiza- tions, and many fraternal organizations. The Reidsville Review is a daily publication.

To those interested in locating in an ideal city, located in an ideal section, all that is necessary is to write or contact,
