PREFACE

REIDSVILLE, N. C.

"THE FRIENDLY AND LUCKY CITY"

In the Piedmont section of North Carolina, nestled among the rolling hills and green forests, stands the city of Reidsville, one of the state's most progressive cities.

The outgrowth of a settlement which began in 1815 and named for former Governor of North Carolina, David Reid. Reidsville is recognized for its industrial, agricultural and cultural life.

Located in the northern part of the state near the Virginia line, Reidsville is unusually free from climatic extremes and disturbances. It has a mean annual temperature of 60.3 degrees and an average rainfall of 41.58 inches.

Scales St. Looking North

Reidsville is located on U. S. Highways No. 29 and No. 158 and on the main line of the Southern Railway, therefore is easily accessible to farmers, merchants and consumers. The credit bureau and utilities re- veals that trade is drawn from about three-fourths of Rockingham Coun- ty. The city is one of the states ranking ports of entry. Official 1950

PREFACE

(Continued from Page 7)

Government Census shows the population within the city limits as 11,708. The township is estimated at 18,025.

Rockingham County, of which Reidsville is the principal city, ranks 13th in the Piedmont section with consumer purchases and payrolls. There are over 300 wholesale and retail establishments in Reidsville covering over 30 city blocks.

The city is located in an area which produces the world's finest cigarette tobacco and is one of the largest tobacco manufacturing centers of the nation. It is also one of the larger tobacco market centers; having six large warehouses where sales are conducted each year beginning in mid-September and continuing until December, paying out 13 million dollars in 1950 to the growers. Although tobacco ranks number one both agriculturally and industrially in Reidsville no single unit of in- dustry has grown to over-balance economy. In addition to the cigarette manufacturers there are manufacturers of batteries, cloth bags, ladies' hose, chemicals, textiles, bed spreads, bakery products and picker sticks.

Municipal Building

Principal raw materials in the area in addition to tobacco include corn, grain and forage crops, short leaf pine, upland oaks and other hard woods.

The Reidsville City school system is composed of four elementary schools for white and two for colored; one high school for white and one

(Continued on Page 10)

PREFACE

for colored. Both high schools are accredited by the Southern Associa- tion of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

The recreation department of the city operates three parks for white and one for colored, with four white and three colored playgrounds be- ing opened during the summer months under the supervision of Senior and Junior playground supervisors. Other recreational activities consist of basketball, baseball, football, golf, fishing and theaters. Concerts, plays, art displays and numerous associations and civic clubs con- tribute to the culture of the city. Eleven religious denominations are represented here.

The city supports a newspaper, published five days weekly and two radio stations.

There are fourteen medical men including the professions of in- ternal medicine, ear, eye, nose and throat specialists, pediatricians and surgeons plus six dentists. Facilities are being increased at the Annie Penn Memorial Hospital to accommodate 125 beds.

Operating under the sanitation code of North Carolina, Reidsville maintains water and power plants, police, fire and welfare departments of high efficiency and merit. Its telephone facilities and service ranks with the best in the state.

U. S. Post Office

In addition to its favored geographical location, its unusual climatic and natural advantages, thriving industrial and agricultural life, and civic and cultural resources, Reidsville is noted for its friendliness and hos- pitality .. A warm and sincere welcome awaits those who visit "The Lucky City."
